These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze whether and how 4D Printing is becoming economically feasible. 4D printing is defined as 3D printing of smart materials whose shape and properties change with the addition of heat or electrical energy. The presentation describes a number of these smart materials, the specific stimuli that lead to changes in shaper or properties, and application examples. Examples include self-healing polymers for smart phones, other materials for space structures, alloys for heat engines, and dielectric elastomers for artificial muscles. 4D printing with smart materials
