Microsoft is very conscious of the importance of data security and availability. Customers must be confident that Microsoft is protecting their data and that the service is highly available. To provide this level of service, Microsoft provides data centers managed by a central organization within Microsoft. This organization has invested in dedicated data center locations and capabilities.Microsoft Online Services deploys software on the latest hardware and network equipment in an N+1 architecture to enable failover. Microsoft Online Services saves data to geo-redundant locations to provide service continuity.Microsoft protects data through nine layers of security, leveraging the latest security capabilities from the Microsoft® Forefront™ Security Suite product group. To ensure that the hosting infrastructure is safe and secure, an independent third party, CyberTrust, conducts regular tests.Operational processes follow best practice guidance from ITIL and MOF, and Microsoft Online Services is currently gaining accreditation in SAS-70 audit to provide strict levels of control.Microsoft Online Services provides round-the-clock IT professional support and a 99.9% uptime SLA with defined financial penalties for failing to meet the SLA.
RequirementsThe server used to run the directory synchronization tool must be joined to a domain in the Forest that will be synchronized. Directory synchronization requires a version of Windows 2003 SP2 or later, and performs a prerequisite check during installation to ensure that the operating system is supported. Directory synchronization leverages the .NET and PowerShell framework when performing synchronization crawls and imports into the Online company, so .Net 2.0 or later is required.During the installation and configuration of DirSync, the account performing the installation must be a member of the Enterprise Admins Group. This level of permission is required to create the MSOL_Active_Directory_Sync user service account. This account is used to collect all users, contacts, and groups that are stored in the DirSync MSDE database. This database is used to synchronize objects with Microsoft Online Services. The MSDE database will not work if there are more than 50,000 objects in the Active Directory forest. To migrate a directory with more than 50,000 objects in an Active Directory forest, you must use a full version of Microsoft SQL Server. To learn more about using DirSync with a full version of Microsoft SQL Server, you must telephone 866-MSONLIN. Support staff will instruct you on how to install DirSync with a full installation of SQL, running either locally on the same computer or on a remote computer.
