Ambient
awareness
A new form of social awareness, produced from relatively constant
contact with one's friends and colleagues via social networking
platforms on the Internet. The term essentially defines the sort of
omnipresent knowledge one experiences by being a regular user of these
media outlets that allow a constant connection with one's social circle.
Augmented
reality
A live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment
whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computergenerated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.
Avatar
The graphical representation of an internet user or the user's alter ego or
character.
Blog
Blog is a personal content management platform often hosted on free
domains; it’s less formal/institutional than a website; the goal of a blog
is to establish a community of shared interests and inspire
conversations.
Blogosphere
All blogs and their interconnections.
Blogroll
A list of hyperlinks to other blogs or websites.
Catfish
A person who creates a fake identity on social networks.
Collective
intelligence
Shared or group intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and
competition of many individuals and appears in consensus decision
making.
Content curation The process of selecting, organizing and presenting the information that
you think your followers will find interesting and valuable, thus creating
the added value to your online profile.
Crowdfunding
The collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money,
usually via the Internet, to support efforts initiated by other people or
organizations
Crowdsourcing
The process of obtaining services, ideas, or content by soliciting
contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an
online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.
Cyberspace
The electronic medium of computer networks, in which online
communication takes place.
Digital identity
A set of online data that uniquely identifies a person or a thing.
Digital shadow
A data trail left by someone's internet use (synonyms: digital footprint /
cyber shadow).
Generate traffic
To encourage internet users to look at a particular website.
Geo-tagging
The process of adding geographical identification to online media
(photographs, videos etc...)

To research information on something or someone on the internet.
Hashtag
A word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #. It is a form of metadata
tag.

Microblogging
A form of blogging that allows users to broadcast short messages
(content is restricted in length).
Online
reputation
The perception that an internet user generates based on their digital
footprint.

A pin is an image or video that you can upload to the website Pinterest.
The verb to pin means to upload an image or video to the site.
Podcast
A multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for
downloading to a portable media player, computer etc.
Search engine
optimization
(SEO)
The process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a
search engine's natural search results.
Six degrees of
separation
The theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other
person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more
than five intermediaries.
Smart mob (flash A large group of people mobilized by social media to meet in a public
mob)
place typically for the purpose of social or political protest.
Social media
The various online technology tools that enable people to communicate
easily via the internet to share information and resources.
Social network
The use of internet-based social media to make connections with
friends, family, classmates, customers and clients.
Strong ties
Your family, friends, close co-workers and people you associate with
frequently; limited in number for someone, because they require more
time and effort to keep up.

To put the name of a user, a brand, an event or a group in a Facebook
post or photograph.
(A) Troll
Someone who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup
or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and
argument.

A microblog post limited to 140 characters on the microblogging
website Twitter.
User-generated
content (UGC)
A range of media content available in a range of modern
communications technologies (digital video, blogging, podcasting,
social networking, social media, wikis etc.).
Viral video/going Internet content (usually an image or video) that is passed through eviral
mail and social networking sites and which becomes famous very
quickly (i.e. overnight).
Virtual
community
A social network of individuals who interact through specific social
media, potentially crossing geographical and political boundaries in
order to pursue mutual interests or goals.
Virtual goods
Goods that are bought and sold with real-world money as part of online
role-playing games or browser-based Internet games.
Wiki
A web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing

Webinar
A seminar conducted over the Internet.
Weak ties
Contacts or friends you don't speak to regularly; you can handle many
more of them than strong ties.
Word-of-mouth
marketing
An unpaid form of promotion — oral or written — in which satisfied
customers tell other people how much they like a business, product,
service, or event. For example, when a consumer's interest for a
company's product or service is reflected in their daily dialogues.
