13. By 1931, UC Berkeley physics professor Ernest Orlando Lawrence invented and developed a cyclotron that generated high-energy beams of nuclear particles that made possible the exploration of the atomic nucleus. In 1939 Lawrence was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in physics.
