The University of Chicago was founded in 1890 with the goal of being a modern research university combining an English-style undergraduate college and German-style research institute. It was established by the American Baptist Education Society, oil magnate John D. Rockefeller, and received land donated by Marshall Field. The university has led in numerous scientific discoveries and ranks highly in various university rankings, with 85 Nobel laureates associated with it. While contributing to Chicago, the university also uses the city as a laboratory to address social issues globally.
