Duties in the RHU of Barangay Quezon

Community Health Nursing in Itogon Benguet
Community duty will be one of the best parts of my being a
student nurse because I know I will learn a lot, not only in skills but also in values. For some, it is
like wasting their time because instead of acquiring different skills in the hospital they are sent
to the community just to be with the folks. I was able to knock on every stranger’s door
overcoming myself and talked to the residents. In here, I learned that community duty is not
an ordinary activity for a student nurse.
It was September 24, 2012, our first day in the Poblacion, Itogon. Just like any other
community duties, we first did our courtesy call at RHU of Itogon Central. I don’t know
anything about this place except from the fact that it is a mountainous area. When I saw the
pictures in the municipal hall, I learned more about Itogon. I was surprised to know that
behind the green mountains of Itogon, lies the magnificent works of nature- the sceneries
that the Itogon people can truly be proud off. From its image forming mountains, it’s cool
tree parks, rich pine trees, running rivers down to its rich land, all these and more sceneries
Itogon can be proud of.
After our courtesy call, we went to our designated area, the other mountain and is needed
to cross hanging bridge. We were able to render care to the community people, starting
from the home visits and BP monitoring that we did each day; to the health teachings on
breastfeeding, hypertension, dengue awareness activities; and even from our simple walk in
the fields-all these made me experience the life and the work of a true community health
nurse. The simple interventions we did to the community people are already a big thing for
them. And because of those things that we did, they felt that they are important. I was so
touched because every time we go to their place they would say words of gratitude for
what we have done. Through these experiences I was able to prove what nursing really is; To
render care for community people
-To apply my learning and knowledge about my profession
-To gain more experience in enhancing my ability
-To motivate myself as a health care provider
-To perform my duty as a competent student nurse ant to be able to broaden my ability in
the said profession
In the RHU of Acupan Benguet
Within our more than five hours duty or the third day, I have learned different things
that are needed for me to be a good and responsible nurse someday. I have learned
different how to manage my time wisely with the patients, group mates, CI and midwives in
the institution. I was able to deal with the community people regarding some important

information in getting in getting vital signs especially blood pressure. I was able to gained
additional knowledge concerning on the techniques toward the improvement of the
conditions of some patients. Though it was my second time to experience our duty there
were lots of memories to learned and gained. I realized it is fun being a student nurse
because you can gain a different experience in dealing with other people.
In the RHU of Quezon Hill
My learning experience that day is very wide since I learned a lot and recalled that in
our previous lesson NCM 101 we can now apply it in real life situations. Here are the following
informations that occur to us, how to compute the EDD (Expected Date of Delivery) and
AOG (Age of Gestation) were it is very valuable for pregnant mothers. EDD tends us to inform
us, when will be the time for pregnant women to give birth and AOG simply tells us how
mature the fetus already or its development. I also encountered the process of Health
Center, filling up forms, asking questions to the client and act as a nurse. This is a crucial
experience because I learned a lot.
