Key messages from Learning Event No. 12: "How can we measure the multiple benefits for smallholder farmers that underlie resilience?", at the 2012 Agriculture and Rural Development Day in Rio de Janiero.
1. How can we measure the multiple
benefits for smallholder farmers that
underlie resilience?
Elwyn Grainger-Jones
2. Key messages
• Please give up to three bullets on key messages
from your Learning Event
1. Measuring impacts of agricultural
programmes must also include landscape and
ecosystem impacts in addition to “regular””
poverty and production/productivity
measures
2. While the stock of natural capital is one
generally underreported measure of livelihood
resilience, institutional, governance and social
aspects of resilience are important too
3. Evidence of impact
• Please give up to three bullets on evidence of
the impact of your case example – ideally this
should be quantitative data
1. N/A – programme not yet started – was
presenting the results framework to measure
multiple benefit adaptation
4. Going to scale
• Please give up to three bullets on messages on what is needed to take your
case to scale e.g. What policy change is required ? – What investment is
needed ?– and who needs to take action?
• Greater recognition of cross-cutting impacts of
agriculture
• Simpler metrics for measuring livelihood
resilience of smallholders
• Global targets – such as MDGs/SDGs – set an
example by finding indicators that do not
separate sectors or themes across development,
environment and agriculture.
