2. + Benefits to Using Open
Educational Resources
Allowing others access to free knowledge – something they
could not get unless they were enrolled at a college/university.
In regards to student costs, can save a lot on tuition, textbooks,
etc.
Allow people access to courses through Harvard, MIT, Yale,
etc. The opportunity to attend these courses is shared by such
a small percentage of the population.
Getting to utilize other peoples resources for my own gain –
either by learning from it or using it within a course.
Allows for the presentation of “best-practice”.
3. + Challenges to Using Open
Educational Resources
Determining the reliability and validity of the resources that you
are searching.
Possibly not finding enough sources for your particular subject
matter, or not finding exactly what you are looking for.
Once you make the decision to use an open license, knowing
that even if you change it later on anyone who has used it up to
that point still has that right.
Being willing to share the resources that you created openly.
This could be a tough pill to swallow.
Even if a student takes an online course it doesn’t get them
credentialed or certified, so while the knowledge is good, other
than learning something new, what is the benefit?
