2. My Idea for the Brief
For the brief, I plan to use a front cover, contents page and a double
page spread. I plan to call my magazine ‘PLACID’ and the colour
scheme will be monochrome and dark purple will be used on the
banner head to make it stand out. On the front cover I will use three
photographs; on the contents page I will use a different two
photographs and on the double page spread, I will use a selection of
up to five photographs that I have taken. The essential information
will placed at the bottom right corner of the front cover.
3. Genre / Sub Genre
The genre for my magazine is indie rock music. The magazines that
have inspired me are: Q, Mojo and Kerrang! I like the colours used in
the Q magazine that I looked at as they were monochrome but the
writing stood out well against the white background which inspired
me to use monochrome colours in my magazine. I liked the way that
Kerrang! contained a lot of information on the front cover and gave
you an insight into what the magazine was to be about. Mojo
magazine is printed on non-glossy paper which stands out on the
shelves and has shown me various ways that I could make my
magazine more original.
4. Target Audience
My target audience consists of young people who
are still in education whether it be part time or full
time. Due to being young, they have a small
income and are sociable people. They enjoy going
to concerts and festivals where indie rock music is
being performed and prefer darker colours over
bright colours so they don’t stand out very much.
5. Major Conventions
I will ensure to use text that is large and clear to see which will
allow my magazine to be noticed easily. The colours used will not
clash and will be easy to see and read. I will set out my contents
page in columns which is similar to ‘Q’ magazine as it looks well
presented and organised. For the double page spread I will use a
photograph that covers all of one page and part of another and I
will surround it with a small part of information regarding the band
and a Q&A section with the lead singer so readers could get to
know the band.
6. Conventions
If the photos are taken on a windy day, I may change the hairstyle
so that it is away from the models face at all times which will
increase the impact of the model on the target audience as she will
be clearer. If the makeup does not look correct, I may change the
idea to either make it more subtle or add more drama to a
particular feature to make it stand out more. For the background
on the double page spread, I may add a pattern as it will be more
unique in comparison to the block colours that are often used.
7. Original Images
I plan to use a female model dressed in dark, ripped clothing as this is
often portrayed as indie rock fashion so it fits in well with the genre of
my magazine. I plan to do the photoshoot in a park in the evening
which will display the fact of festivals being where a band of this genre
would often perform. For my other images that I need, I will take
them in various lighting to ensure the best quality of the image. The
image on the front cover will be taken in natural lighting which will
create natural shadows on the model’s face. This will increase the
belief that the model is positioned closer to the reader than the text
featured.
8. Plan B
Due to planning to take the images in the evening, the
lighting may not portray the features of the model clearly so
if this were to happen, I would take the images during the day
and the follow up using photoshop to make them appear as
though they were taken late on. Also, due to taking my
photographs in a public place, if I am unble to access the
desired location, I will try again on another day but earlier so
there is a higher chance to achieve my plan.
