6. The Tongass National Forest on the coast of
Alaska is the largest national forest in the
U.S. It’s as big as
Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and
Rhode Island put together. This forest is
home to many kinds of animals, such as
otters, salmon, grizzly bears, and rare blue
bears. It’s also home to many types of plants
and trees, like spruce and Western hemlock.
These trees can live for 1,000 years and grow
more than 200 feet!
7. Bats are very different from all other mammals
because they can fly. Bats do not have feathers
and bat wings are not like bird wings. In fact, bat
wings are like the human hand. Each wing has an
arm, four long fingers and a short thumb. Thin
skin stretches between the fingers. The thumb
and each finger can move. This helps the bat
change the shape of its wings and change
direction when it flies. Bats can turn, roll and
swoop. It helps them catch insects.
Bats are an interesting mammal with a unique
ability!!
