Editor's Notes
The three main pillars of the PiL Network are: Enable educators to find resources that can be immediately used in the classroom, such as: access to software, tools, lesson plans, and other user generated contentSupport educators and school leaders in acquiring the skills needed to use ICT teaching and learning practices through a meaningful set of professional development content and curriculumProvide an opportunity to connect and collaborate with other educators, school leaders, and their classrooms in building communities of practice and create global connectionsCommunities are critical to learning – teachers must collaborate with other teachers, at their school and other schools; they must connect with parents, administrators, and students and we’ll provide the connective tissue to foster this collaboration
Partners in Learning drives strong affinity for Microsoft and Microsoft products as representative by some of the figures you see above.Partners in Learning also has strong recognition among educators and education leaders
Developing a set of core principles help prioritize the development and design efforts for how we want to determine the user experience on the network. The PiLN has a unique opportunity to amplify the Partners in Learning mission of creating affinity with educators and school leaders. In order to ensure the Network serves as the connection point for engagement, preparation, and inspiration we will focus on the following core principles:Create an experience that is frictionless and easy-to-accessDrive breadth activation through depth engagementAmplify the contributions of Master Teachers and great contentIntegrate social environments and communityIntegrate mobile & multi-screen approachesDesign for affordability, sustainability, scalability
Tell the story through the voice of our audienceIntegrate the user into an application based on who they are and what is relevant and personal to themHumanize PIL to evoke an emotional response by using the educator’s voice, video, or story
Overview of some of the new features users will see on the PiL Network.
The Home Page is designed to provide context by telling the Partners in Learning story through the voice of our educators. During our development efforts we really took to heart the theme of your ideas matter- that’s why you’ll see the images and stories of our educators and school leaders featured prominently on the Network. Both on the HomePage and in our About page where our goal is to amplify the great work they continue to do in their classrooms and schools.
This personalized hub is the area where we believe teachers will continue to come back on a regular basis to check in on: new content items, offers, or check any new notifications altering them to completing a training, or altering them to an upcoming deadline like applying for the IEF in their region. To drive ongoing member engagement, once authenticated, user’s lands on a dashboard that suggests content based on their profile
We optimized our early development worked around providing access to the resources educators want most. We understand one of the primary appeal’s for educators participating in a community like the PiLN is access to resources-like free tools, product tutorials, and learning activities, which can be immediately used in the classroomWith this in mind, we’ve optimized making the discovering of these resources a lot easier by consolidating over 30 different tools and tutorials which provide real classroom examples of how technology can be harnessed. Our users can not only download the tool, but through our tagging infrastructure, they can also see all of the relevant content associated with the product: such as additional resources ad tutorials around how to apply the tool within a classroom setting.
Inspire, Showcase Innovation and Amplify the Work of Depth TeachersLearning Activities can be uploaded by anyone, put in a queue, and are then approved for display on the Partners in Learning Network. Through the form, educators describe, tag and upload any files associated with the learning activity. Educators can ask questions, comment, download and share the activity with others. Examples include Forum VCTs, the Digital Literacy Curriculum, lesson plans, etc. Beneath the Network lies a rich meta data tagging architecture that enables the Network to surface these activities in a gallery as well as in other areas of the site. For example, in the Games Based Learning Hot Topic, we can surface a link, “See Games Based Learning Activities” and upon clicking, the member sees a list of learning activities that were tagged with “Kodu” and/or “games based learning.”

My Profile Captures All My StuffA member’s view of their profile includes all their activities on the Partners in Learning Network, including their training status, links to all the content and comments they’ve contributed, a record of their notifications, how many badges they’ve acquired, and the ability to adjust their settings. Public ProfileAnywhere on the Network a member can click on another members name and see their profile. The visitor to the profile can immediately gain a sense of the member’s contributions, participation level and status on the Network. In addition, they can see all content, comments and collaboration opportunities the member has posted.
New Dynamic Home PageThis is the beta launch of Dynamic Home Page which will eventually enable country content managers to publish localized content (list of learning activities, tutorials, discussions and blog, featured members, 3 spaces for local “ads” in the carousel) for their country. In addition, all schools with innovation journals are will be highlighted on the Home Page in random order. There are some enhancements and additional testing required before this feature is ‘hardened’ for release to the field. The intention is to have a phased roll out in H1 of FY13 with countries with the highest number of members being first in line for roll out. Training will be mandatory for countries adopting this feature. Some additional updates to the Home Page include: new Metro-style UI, featured members section, highlighting the most popular community discussions, and direct access to Anthony’s 365-day look at global heroes in education blog, Daily Edventures.
This is an example of the UI which is associated with our PD curriculum. Just as we have a homepage “engine” this same Under the PD tab- a teacher would see the PD content available based on ROLE= teacher STATE=X, or COUNTRY =X.
