In the 1930’s people gathered around the family radio In the 1940’s my mother’s living room carpet had worn spots where the neighbors gathered to watch boxing on television In the 1960’s our family gathered around a neighbor’s tv to watch Walt Disney on a Sunday evening... in color In 1985, William “Russ” McIntyre invented the Universal Remote Control, with patented ‘smart’ ‘Learning’ feature In 1997, our family members took turns at the family desktop computer In 1998 both my husband and myself had our own cell phones In 2004, all our family members had minicomputers on us at all times In 2009, we owned ‘smart phones’ with Instant Messages & Emails being sent & answered directly from our phones
Implications... For the first time in history communication has become individualized Project Tomorrow CEO, Julie Evans, stated at the Independent Colleges of Indiana Technology Summit 2008 that over 40% of second graders say they have regular access to mobile devises ...and our kids say they have to power down to go to school The Net Generation (born on or after 1982) says Email is not their communication devise, it is merely a transportation system - a way to attach and send an assignment to their teacher. Instant messaging is their communication systemt.
The tail wags the dog. It is time to rethink how we do business. “Step on to the footbridge...”
