This document provides information about the traditional Greek game of "apples". It discusses the history and origins of the game, tracing it back to ancient Greece and connections to similar games played in Africa over 200 years ago. The purpose, rules, and how the game is played are described. Apples involves throwing a ball to try and hit other players while they try to avoid being hit or catch the ball. If caught, a player gets an "apple" which allows them to stay in the game if later hit. The last player remaining wins.

Creating an English School Newspaper is an enjoyable, creative and educational process! This project aspires to involve many European learners in the creation of a common Newspaper! Each issue will thematic, so that all participants can get an idea of what is going on in their partners' side. Participant learners will also have the opportunity to interact via Twinspace, improving thus their speaking/typing along with their writing skills! Practising skills simulates real-life communication in a fun-filled project that will help everyone realize the emergence of English as an international language and expand their horizons. Learners will also have the opportunity to feel like citizens of the world, members of a vast community, outside the barriers of their local surroundings. Using English as the vehicle, this project will provide useful insight on their peers' daily routine, interests, customs and mentality, aloowing everyone thus to become more tolerant with diversity.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. The role of Greek traditional games
❖ Traditional games have been played for thousands of years. They were
played by the ancient Greeks and continued on being an inseparable part of
children’s daily lives up until today. The reason why those games have stood
the test of time is because they are one of the greatest, healthiest forms of
entertainment.
❖ They are fun to play and can be a great way to relieve stress and escape your
hectic daily routine.Additionally, according to scientific research, such games
contribute to the development of the kids’ character by helping them gain self-
awareness.
4. The purpose of apples
❖ The apples is one of the most commonly played traditional games among
Greek children. There is no proof of it having been created for a particular
purpose, nevertheless it is a great form of entertainment characterised by the
sense of freedom it offers its players.
❖ While being a source of positive feelings, it is also beneficial to the body. As a
game it is quite demanding and requires fast, controlled movements,
therefore being a form of physical exercise.
5. History of apples
❖ Although apples is a Greek traditional game, there are many different forms of
that game across the world. For instance, apples are connected with a widely
known American game called Dodgeball.
❖ There is a lot of evidence that a similar
version of apples and dodgeball was played
in Africa more than 200 years ago. It wasn’t
a fun, or even entertaining game. As a matter
of fact, it was played with rocks instead of
rubber balls, and was used to develop the
strength and endurance of warriors. Some
people support that it was a game played to
death.
6. History of apples
❖ Another theory states that the game originated in Asia, Ancient Greece, or
Mesoamerica, a historical region and cultural area in North America, as early
as 500 BC.
7. History of apples
❖ Apples may as well be connected with an ancient
Greek game described by the 2nd-century Greek
writer Julius Pollux called Ostrakinda. In this
game, two teams stood on either side of a line. A
shell was spun or tossed in the air and one team
chased the other according to which side of the
shell turned up.
8. Rules of apples
➢ The game is played in an outdoor space
with 3 players or more and a ball.
➢ Two players are standing opposite each
other at a distance of 5 or 6 metres and
the other players stand in between them.
➢ The two players are throwing the ball to
each other trying to hit someone of the
rest of the players, while they are trying
to avoid the ball or catch it .
➢ If someone of the players gets hit by the
ball, he leaves the game.
9. Rules of apples
➢ In contrast, if he manages to catch it before it hits the ground, he wins
one “apple”, which means one ‘’life’’. He can use its “apple” to remain in
the game if he gets hit by the ball, or he can similarly save another
player.
➢ The game is continued until all players are hit by the ball and only one
player is left in the game.
➢ Then, the players who are outside have 10 attempts to hit him with the
ball and if he avoids all of them, he wins and all the other players that
were hit by the ball come in the game, which restarts. Otherwise, the
players who are outside win. If the game continues, then the first two hit
by the ball have to stand outside.
