“Bridging three generations timeless
toys and games”
A.14 Seasonal Game Erasmus Project
Bowls more than a game:
It is a game suitable for everyone, bringing children closer to the sporting practice
Promoting the integration of different cultures and different abilities.
In the school today there is a growing presence of pupils of foreign origin. This
situation is experienced not only as a problem but as an occasion for reflection by
the teachers and parents on the pedagogical and cultural importance on children’s
opening towards the world. The comparison and the knowledge of the other allows
the discovery of differences and similarities with the different cultures
The primary goal of the school is to implement it. An intercultural education that
becomes educational project for everyone. "Integration also goes through the
game of sporting bowls practiced ever since in many countries of the world, loved
for the naturalness of its technical gestures and for the immediacy of involvement.
It is considered as a valuable training tools, and promotes inclusion of young
people in our increasingly complex and problematic school society.
«BOWLS»
Very popular game in Italy, among all the social classes and elderly people
Also popular on the beach
Instruments
Spheres, (8) called bowls (usually in bakelite), a smaller
bowl called «ball» and an open space, or delimitated field.
Players
It can be played in 2, one against one, or in teams of 2, 3 or 4 players.
In this slide we have two teams
Rules
Each team's players launch one of their bowls in turn, trying to
get them as close as possible to the little ball. The “bet” or “baby
bottle” which is a precision launch characterized by the rolling of
the bowl along the entire approach path. Players who specialize
in this kind of launch are called "pointers" or "catchers".
Rules
To do this, players can also kick off opponents bowls by hitting them with
their own ones. This launch is composed by kick-off, flight or raffa. The
“throw-in”, is a throw that is carried out with more strength, generally at
the end of a series of steps, and its purpose is to strike one or more
opposing bowles with the intention of removing them from the little ball,
hitting it. Players who specialize in this kind of launch are known as
"kickers“ or “catchers”. Their point is called “trick”
Score
When all the players have launched their own bowls, check what is closest to
the ball and assign a point to their team; If the second nearest bowl is of the
same team, it is assigned a further point.
History
This game has ancient origins: in fact,
stone stones in Turkey dating back to
7,000 BC and others in Egypt dating back
to 2000 BC have been found.
It helps:
1) to develop relational skills through goals that are common to all sports
disciplines and specific to this educational sport:
A) contributing to the development of coherent behaviours through the
experience of game
B) sharing the rules and their respect, while also developing the capacity
initiative and problem solving
C) stimulating self-control
D) promoting concentration
E) creating a climate of sociality
F) increasing self-esteem
G) increasing self-evaluation capacity;
Social skills
2) to develop coordination capacities in the period of intensive development
ranging from 8 to 11 years old; the coordinated skills required to choose the
movement, to its direction, to its control, which this play promotes are:
A) perception, knowledge and consciousness of the body
B) oculo-manual and segmental coordination
C) space-time organization
D) general dynamic coordination
Concentration
It’s a play practised a lot by elderly people
It helps generational dialogue
It's a much-loved sport that can be practiced everywhere. To keep fit and do some
movement we do not necessarily have to go to the gym or practice expensive sports.
A walk in the open air, a bike ride, or why not, a nice bowling game are all nice and
at a practically zero cost to relax and keep body and mind training.
So many benefits with little effort
Regardless of the type of game and the number of players, bowls require moderate but
constant physical activity coupled with a good level of concentration. That's why just to
the amateur level it is very good for the physical and mind growing.
Continuous confrontation with opponents also helps to socialize, since in the phases of
the game there are alternating strategies, jokes and discussions between players, but
also with viewers, who sometimes become part of the game as arbitrators, bettors and
advisors
In particular, the game of bowls is comparable to the gentle gymnastics, as it
allows to keep muscles in work, promote circulation, increase balance and improve
bone elasticity. It also represents an excellent remedy against loneliness, because it
is only sufficient to approach a field (in many cities there are free, often within
public parks) to know other people. From there to start making a few games the
space is short and you do not even need too much experience.
