Editor's Notes
I am Hanna Stahlberg, Communications Associate at UNU-IAS. I have interacted with many of you in the past and am delighted to see you all here. I would also like to welcome some of the new RCEs that joined us recently. This meeting is a great opportunity for all of us to communicate and get to know each other and talk about how we can reach our goals.
Communication is a two way lane. Without your feedback, your content, your engagement the Network would not exist and would defy its purpose.
I would like to use this session to explain what it is the we do in terms of Communications at UNU and especially under the ESD umbrella at UNU-IAS. I manage two networks, the RCE network and ProSPER.Net (network that focusses on postgraduate education in sustainability in Asia Pacific.
So we will talk a little bit about strategy and how it communications are embedded in this strategy
We will talk about Communication in Practice, what are the instruments we have or are developing?
I will then spend a few minutes on reporting and why it is so important that RCEs report back to us.
And finally I will give you some insight on what I am planning for the future and what projects we have in the pipeline to be launched soon.
‘
On the institutional level at UNU as part of the mandate more emphasis is being placed on the E of ESD as it has been recognized that the impact can be accelerated via learning. The UN System is also a great way to find a way to tap into the international frameworks and global platforms.
The roles that UNU-IAS and in particular the ESD could play are as follows 1) the informer – sharing content that is policy relevant, interesting and timely and of added value to the members 2) The integrator – we shall all speak with one language to give the network a full identity 3) The teacher – we want to empower the network and provide the relevant capacities 4) finally the synergizer, our position is ideal to find commons between the different RCEs on the ground and to help RCEs grow and connect
Communications are implemented in different ways: we consolidate data (eg annual reports, project reports of individual RCEs, inter-RCE projects and or the network as a whole) we develop capacities, provide community relevant messages, help networking particularly during events and finally wish to engage with other platforms as well as be distinctive from them in the added value we provide
Channel coordination with UN/UNU system, other ESD platforms, what distinguishes ourselves from other ESD platforms?
Share and provide content - they are the two drivers
Just to give you an idea of what we mean in terms of content and ways of engaging vice versa
Annual reports for example allow us to find relevant synergies and empower RCEs to connect within the network and beyond
I would like to talk a little bit more about engagement and content

Clear and very strict guidelines on content and layout. Clear policy recommendations
As part of Network 5, UNESCO needs to know what local actions RCEs are taking and at what scale to get an idea of where and how local stakeholders are working with ESD initiatives. Without this information, UNESCO, and therefore the UN is unable to get an accurate idea of how many people are engaged with ESD, and how they are engaged with it.
Experts for policy briefs, event participation, panelists
IPBES--- RCEs are now their strategic partner and they are keen on learning RCEs’ projects to look for synergies with the international platform.
It is also important to have the funding from the Ministry of Environment of Japan, which support all the work that ESD Programme does to support the work of RCEs. Without the detailed information on your projects, it will be extremely hard for the ESD Programme at IAS to report back the value of RCEs to the donor. (You do not have to say this but just a thought as I am in a difficult position to maintain the funding from them)
Upcoming search function 2016/2017.
Updating your profile online will give better visibility and recognition to your RCE. It will allow other RCEs, NGO, organisations to contact you and access your information. It is free public relations via the official portal of UNU-IAS. It can help develop synergies between the RCEs, when looking for each other. It allows networking. All information is Google searchable so having a profile and your report online can be seen by anyone anywhere when tagged with the appropriate tags. Finally serendipity: fortunate happenstances may happen such as external contacting by other institutes who may have funding or are looking for experts.
30-50 % report depending on region with some regions not reporting at all, the same applies to profilesWe would like to hear your feedback in terms of reporting, As you know the system has been extensively refurbished and hence it is easier to use off and online. After much feedback from the community over the last two years. However we are not sure why it is still so few RCEs that report. On average approx. 50% report, although it is a requirement once acknowledged under the UNU umbrella. End of DESD versus SGD implementation?
Btw the same applies to profiles on the website.
Enhanced Annual Reporting functions to improve the system. Award linked to full report, no report no nomination possible.

Putting RCEs on the map.
This is the status quo – in some regions 35% -50 % profiles and approx. 50% of all RCEs report. Most that report are the ones with profiles.???
