of Online Courses

Definition of Online Course
The definition of online course varies depending
on the education level you’re at.
 Master degree course
 Webinar or webcast
 Synchronous course
 Asynchronous course
Master’s degree courses
 are often set up in "cohorts.” This means that you’re assigned to a
 team of students, who work together on papers or projects.
Webinars or webcasts
 Webinars are the preferred technology in most cases, because
 they allow students to interact with professors by typing in
 questions. Webcasts are a simpler type of presentation, where
 you watch and hear a class without the ability to respond while it’s
 in progress.
Synchronous courses
 require students and teachers to go online together at specific
 times.
Asynchronous course
 means the teacher will give you a series of assignments and tests
 online that are due at a certain date.
The Course Development Team
for Online Courses
① Subject Matter Expert or Author
• SME responsible to the content of the online course.
• SME identifying readings resources.
• SME make sure the course objectives, content,
  exercises, examinations and assignments are use
  compatible pedagogy.
• SME providing other team members with a legible
  copy of written material.
② Graphic Designer
• The graphic designer works with the Web developer
  and the author to create a unique course look.
• The graphic designer give continuing support in
  designing consistent graphical elements when courses
  are being updated or revised.
• Graphic designers use graphic applications like
  Adobe Photoshop®, ImageReady®, Adobe Illustrator®
  and Macromedia Freehand®.
③ Web Developer

• Web developers should develop online materials that
  illustrate the various kinds of content and interactive
  options using e-mail and chat utilities.
• They create design storyboards, assist SME to use
  tools to create the course Web pages and to maintain
  the course.
• Web developers working with the graphic designer to
  conceptualize the screens, backgrounds, buttons,
  window frames, and text elements in the program.
④ Programmer

• The programmer is responsible for program
  functionality. They use specialized software tools to
  enable the interactivity in online courses.
• Programmers should provide development team
  members with a basic understanding of the classes of
  programming tools: code-based programming
  languages, and graphical-user-interfaced (GUI)
  authoring programs.
⑤ Instructional
  Designer
Instructional design model as described by Seels and
Glasgow (1998) involve of:
  • Analysis—the process of defining what is to be learned.
  • Design—the process of specifying how learning will
    occur.
  • Development—the process of authoring and producing
    the materials.
  • Implementation—the process of installing the
    instruction in the real world.
  • Evaluation—the process of determining the impact of
    instruction.

  • 2. Definition of Online Course The definition of online course varies depending on the education level you’re at. Master degree course Webinar or webcast Synchronous course Asynchronous course
  • 3. Master’s degree courses are often set up in "cohorts.” This means that you’re assigned to a team of students, who work together on papers or projects. Webinars or webcasts Webinars are the preferred technology in most cases, because they allow students to interact with professors by typing in questions. Webcasts are a simpler type of presentation, where you watch and hear a class without the ability to respond while it’s in progress. Synchronous courses require students and teachers to go online together at specific times. Asynchronous course means the teacher will give you a series of assignments and tests online that are due at a certain date.
  • 4. The Course Development Team for Online Courses
  • 5. ① Subject Matter Expert or Author • SME responsible to the content of the online course. • SME identifying readings resources. • SME make sure the course objectives, content, exercises, examinations and assignments are use compatible pedagogy. • SME providing other team members with a legible copy of written material.
  • 6. ② Graphic Designer • The graphic designer works with the Web developer and the author to create a unique course look. • The graphic designer give continuing support in designing consistent graphical elements when courses are being updated or revised. • Graphic designers use graphic applications like Adobe Photoshop®, ImageReady®, Adobe Illustrator® and Macromedia Freehand®.
  • 7. ③ Web Developer • Web developers should develop online materials that illustrate the various kinds of content and interactive options using e-mail and chat utilities. • They create design storyboards, assist SME to use tools to create the course Web pages and to maintain the course. • Web developers working with the graphic designer to conceptualize the screens, backgrounds, buttons, window frames, and text elements in the program.
  • 8. ④ Programmer • The programmer is responsible for program functionality. They use specialized software tools to enable the interactivity in online courses. • Programmers should provide development team members with a basic understanding of the classes of programming tools: code-based programming languages, and graphical-user-interfaced (GUI) authoring programs.
  • 9. ⑤ Instructional Designer Instructional design model as described by Seels and Glasgow (1998) involve of: • Analysis—the process of defining what is to be learned. • Design—the process of specifying how learning will occur. • Development—the process of authoring and producing the materials. • Implementation—the process of installing the instruction in the real world. • Evaluation—the process of determining the impact of instruction.
