The CATT program is a web-based teaching and learning environment designed to provide flexible access to course materials for students. It uses various software tools like WebCT, LaTeX, HTML, Maple and Perl-CGI to create an interactive site with course notes, examples, quizzes and self-tests. Students can access materials and take quizzes anytime online, and get immediate feedback to enhance learning. The program aims to reduce costs for students while improving the learning experience through various online resources and practice tests.
2. Introduction
The CATT programme is designed to produce a flexible learning environment
for students.
The CATT programme is available through the Web page. It is a user friendly
teaching, learning and self-testing environment.
Students can access the course material via the Web at anytime and from any
place at their convenience.
CATT programme is user friendly for both lecturers and students, provides
management of courses, assists students to study mathematics in a more
effective way and imposes minimal cost on students.
The Internet, in the form of the Web, has become a major vehicle for
learning and teaching.
3. The CATT Project
The aim of the project is also to design a programme that is user friendly
and widely available as a Web-based application.
It tailored to the specific needs of the students in the course and
inexpensive for students.
It is not meant to be a textbook, but includes teaching and learning
approaches developed working with different types of students.
4. The Technical Aspects
The CATT programme have several software tools, They are
Web Course Tools(WebCT)
LATEX,
Hypertext Markup Language(HTML),
IBM Techexplorer
Maple and Perl-CGI .
5. Use of Tools
WebCT is an internationally recognised Web-based application tool which en-
ables the creation of a Web-based teaching and learning environment. WebCT
also provides administrative tools for the management of student performance
in the course.
LATEX is used to represent mathematical text.
HTML is currently the publishing language of the Web.
The IBM Techexplorer plug-in enables LATEX to be directly displayed on the
Web.
Maple is a symbolic manipulation package which is used to ran-domly
generate questions and check mathematical expressions entered by students.
Perl-CGI enables user input and provides the interface between Maple and the
Web browser.
7. THE TEACHING AND LEARNING
ASPECTS
The teaching aspect of the CATT programme consists of worked examples,
glossary of definitions and additional course notes to help students to
reinforce their understanding and learning.
The learning aspect consists of quizzes and self-tests.
Quizzes are similar to the current con-ventional quizzes given to students .
WebCT allows a time limit to be set for each quiz and marking is
immediate and automatic. The programme will record results and
feedback the results, answers and solutions to students immediately once
they have finished their quizzes.
This immediate feedback is a great help in learning. The number of
attempts that a student can make on a particular quiz is limited.
8. SELF TESTS
Self-tests are exercises for students to practise at their own pace and no
time limit is imposed.
The tools used to produce the self-test questions are HTML, Maple and
Perl-CGI.
The self-test process is that it generates random questions.
Students are presented with one question at a time. On submitting their
answers, Maple checks for correctness and displays the results.
Students can ask for new questions if they want more practice or they can
easily link back to the lessons and examples to reinforce their
understanding
9. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the CATT programme provides a flexible learning
environment for students, while reducing the need for a great deal of
human resource in the course management process.
Students using the programme need minimal computer skills. It is tailored
to specific needs of the students. There are hyperlinks to course notes,
extra worked examples and exercises.
The programme is interactive and provides an unlimited number of
exercises for self-tests.
The Immediate feedback on quizzes and exercises greatly enhances
learning.
