DEFINITION OF FLOWERING PLANTS
Flowering plants are spermatophytes: they use
seeds to reproduce . The seeds are produced by
specialised structures called flowers .
Orange flower
DEFINITION OF ANGIOSPERM
Flowering plants can be angiosperms. They are
any flowering plant in which the ovules are
enclosed in an ovary, which develops into the
fruit after fertilization.
Olive flowers
EXAMPLES OF ANGIOSPERMS
These are the most modern plants : they first
appeared about 150 million years ago .
Angiosperms include herbaceous (non-woody)
plants, and trees and shrubs.
There are 300 families : holm oaks, corn, orange
trees, olive trees ,rosemary, pepper plants and
poplar trees.

DIFFERENT ORGANS OF ANGIOSPERM
FLOWERS
Angiosperm flowers can have up to 4 different
types of organs: sepals, petals, stamens and
carpels.
EXPLANATION OF THE ORGANS
PETALS
These are the coloured leaves that attract
insects carrying pollen. All the petals are called
the corolla
corolla
STAMENS
These are the male reproductive organs of the
flower. They have a filament with an anther at
the end : the anther produces the pollen grains .
Stamens are protected by the corolla.
STAMENS
CARPELS (PISTILS)
These are the female reproductive organs of a
plant. A carpel includes the ovary, the style and
the stigma. Inside the ovary are the ovules,
which contain the female reproductive cells.
SEPALS
These are leaves below the petals . They are
usually small and green . All the sepals are called
calyx : the calyx protects the internal parts of
the flower.
SEPALS
REPRODUCTION OF ANGIOSPERM
FLOWERS
A complete flower is a flower that has all of 4
types of organs. But not all flowers are
complete: male flowers only have stamens and
female flowers only have carpels. A
hermaphrodite is a flower that has stamens
and carpels.
Fruits and Seeds
Angiosperms produce structures that come from the flowers
ovary, called fruits. Their function is to disperse the seeds
they have inside and protect them.
Remains of the style,
stamens and clyx
that cover the
interior of the fruit.
Seeds that
the ovaries
have
produced.
Stamens
Sepals
(calyx)
There are two types of fruit:
-Freshly fruit, that have a jucy pulp, such as tomatoes or
peaches.
-Dry fruit , that have a stony and rigid fruit wall, such as
the sunflower seeds or nuts.
Inside, their structure is
rigid.
Inside, it has a juicy pulp
with lots of water.
DISPERSION OF SEEDS
The seeds can be dispersed by many ways:
-By the wind.
-By the water.
-By birds or other animals.
The animals take the seeds in form
of fruit in this case, except insects.
