The Imperial Cathedral of Speyer is located in Speyer, Germany. It is Germany's largest cathedral, measuring 134m x 43m. Construction began in 1030 under Emperor Conrad II as a timber-roofed structure. Major reconstruction and expansion took place from 1082-1106 under Emperor Henry IV. Architectural features include a Latin cross plan, octagonal dome, apsidal chapels, western towers, a westwork facade with statues and a rose window, and an interior with 42 groin vaults supported by cylindrical columns in the large crypt. The cathedral features polychrome stonework on the westwork and crypt with red sandstone walls and a lead roof.
