6. Simple Past Tense
a) For an action which happened at a definite time in the past.
The time is stated, already known or implied.
They went camping by the lake last month.
b) For action which happened immediately one after the other in
the past.
First she paid the driver. Then she got out of the taxi.
c) For past habits or states which are now finished.
In such cases we can also use the expression used to.
When John was a student, he used to smoke. But now
he doesn’t smoke.
d) For actions which are related to people no longer alive.
Princess Diana visited a lot of schools.

7. SPELLING OF ED FORM
REGULLAR VERBS
a) Smile smiled, dance danced (Just add – d)
b) Help helped, learn learned (If the verb ends in two
consonants, just add – ed)
c) Rain rained, heat heated (If the verbs ends in two vowels
+ a consonant, just add – ed)
d) Stop stopped, plan planned (If the verb has one syllable
and ends in one vowel + one consonant, double the consonant
to make the – ed)
e) Visit visited, offer offered (If the first syllable of a two-syllable
verb is stressed do not double the consonant)
f) Prefer preferred, admit admitted (If the second syllable
of a two- syllable verb is stressed, double the consonant.

- y, keep the – y. Do not change the – y to – i)
h) Worry worried, study studied (If the verb ends in a
