This is your blank document. Word gives you lots of tools to change your document. Just look at all the buttons. When you put the mouse cursor over the button it tells you what it does. 1

FILE MENU New Open Close Save Save As Page Setup Print Preview Print Exit 2

FILE OPEN 3 Find where you saved your document. A floppy disk is usually in the A: drive. My document is in “My Documents.” Double click on document to open or click open button.

FILE SAVE The first time you save it will ask you where you want to put it. After that when you save it will automatically save it into the place you told it to save. 4

FILE SAVE AS If you want to save your document in another place (after you have already saved it) – like a floppy disk or flash drive use SAVE AS. 5

INSERT CLIP ART 15 When you search for pictures in clip art they will appear in the column on the right. Double click on picture to insert it into document.

INSERT PICTURE FROM FILE 16 Find where you saved your pictures. Mine are in “My Pictures” in My Documents file. Double click on photo to insert.

INSERT AUTO SHAPES When you click on a group of shapes it expands. Click on the one you want to insert it into your document 17

19 FORMAT PARAGRAPH LINE SPACING choose single, 1.5, double or customize.

20 FORMAT BULLETS AND NUMBERING Choose “Bulleted” tab for bullet styles or “Numbered” tab for number styles.

FORMAT BORDERS 21 “ Borders” tab lets you change the border around the word, sentence, or paragraph. “Page Border” tab changes the border around the page.

23 FORMAT DROP CAP Select (highlight) the text where you want the drop cap then select a style.

FORMAT CHANGE CASE 24 Select (highlight) the text where you want to change the text case. Choose a case.

FORMAT BACKGROUND 25 Instead of a color I picked a “Fill Effect” and clicked on the “Texture” tab.

26 ADD OR REMOVE BUTTONS FROM TOOLBAR Click on small black down arrow. Click on “Add or Remove Buttons.” Click on “Standard.” Choose the buttons that you want to see on the toolbar.

Cut - Cuts text or pictures so that you can put it in another place in this document or another document OR deletes the text or picture completely. Copy - Copy text or picture to another place in this document OR into another document. Paste – Paste the “cut” text or picture into another place in this document OR into another document. Undo – Made a mistake? Click on “UNDO” and it takes away the last thing you did. “Undo” will go back several steps so be careful when you undo! Redo – Did you really want that mistake? Change text by clicking left mouse button, holding it down and dragging it over the text you want to change 27 REVIEW FROM BEG. WORD

New - You can work on several documents at the same time. The old one will hide behind the new one. Open - Opens a file that you have already saved Spell Check - Checks the spelling and grammar in your document Save - Saves the document to the hard drive, floppy disc, or flash drive – SAVE OFTEN SO THAT YOU DON’T LOSE ALL YOUR HARD WORK! Print Preview - Will show you what your page will look like when it is printed. Always do a print preview before you print. Print 28 KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Highlight the text you want to change Hold down “Ctrl” button then push: “ C” to Copy “ X” to Cut “ V” to Paste “ U” to Underline “ B” to make Bold “ I” to make Italic “ A” to Select All (highlights everything on the page) “ Z” to Undo “ Y” to Redo “ P” to Print “ N” to open a new document “ O” to open a saved document “ S” to save the document MORE REVIEW

Intermediate Microsoft Word – Hands on Practice

1. Type a sentence on the blank page then “Select All” *handouts pg 6 and 7

2. Change the case of your sentence to all UPPERCASE. *handouts pg 18 and 24

3. Insert page numbers at the bottom middle of the page. *handouts pg 10 and 11

4. Put your curser in a spot on the page where you would like the date and insert date in whichever format you like best *handouts pg 10 and 12

5. Insert the copy write symbol (a C inside a circle) *handouts pg 10 and 14

6. Insert clip art. Choose the picture you like best. *handouts pg 10, 14, and 15

7. Insert an auto shape. Choose the one you like best. *handouts pg 10, 14, and 17

8. Type a couple more sentences after the one you typed before. Select all the text. Make the line spacing double. *handouts pg 18 and 19

9. Type a list of five things you like to eat. Hit enter after every item so that they are each on their own line. Select your list. Format bullets and give the list the bullets you prefer. *handouts pg 18 and 20

10. Add a border to your page. If you click on the “Art” arrow, you will see some really neat borders. *handouts pg 18 and 21

11. Open a new document. If you have forgotten how, see page 28 of the handouts. Divide the page into three columns. Type something into your columns so you can see how they look. *handouts pg 18 and 22
