1. Real Life Case Study
James Eagon Holmes – Dark Knight Massacre
2. On July 20th 2012, James Eagan Holmes went to a midnight screening of the Dark Knight
rises at the Aurora Cinema in Collarado, left through a non-alarmed emergency exit and
went to his car. There he donned his protective clothing he bought online from
tacticalgear.com, a gas mask, a load bearing vest, a ballistic helmet, bullet resistant
leggings, a bullet resistant throat protector and tactical gloves.
3. He threw two gas canisters into the crowd then shot a Remington 870 express shotgun
into the air, then into the crowd. He then shot 45 rounds from a Smith &Wesson MP15
into the audience, finally he shot a Glock 22 firstly at the back the of the room (one
round passing through the wall and hitting three people in the adjacent screen,) then
into the audience. In total he killed 12 people and injured 70. He was arrested without
resistance about 15mins later next to his car behind the cinema.
4. As he was arrested he revealed that he had booby-trapped his apartment about 8km
from the cinema. Police then evacuated the five surrounding buildings from the
residence. The next day police disarmed an explosive device wired to the front entrance
of the apartment in the apartment, police discovered over 30 homemade grenades, and
10 gallons of gasoline.
5. This piece is not entirely relevant to my trailer, however the theatre setting is
a common factor. Differences will include motivation, as James Holmes had
no motivation, where as our ‘Projectionist’ will have revenge/vengeance as a
motive.
