2Chandrayaan-3 successfully
landed on the south pole of the
Moon, making India the first coun-
try to achieve this feat.
Chandrayaan-3 was launched from
Sathish dawan space centre on 14
july,2023.The spacecraft entered
lunar orbit on 5 th august and the
lander touched down near the lunar
south pole on 23 august at 6.03
pm. Making India the fourth country
to land on the moon.
3A team of international scien-
tists used NASA’s James Webb
Space Telescope to detect a new
carbon compound in space for the
first time. Known as methyl cation
(CH3+), the molecule is important
because it aids the formation of
more complex carbon-based mole-
cules. Webb studies every phase in
the history of our Universe, ranging
from the first luminous glows after
the Big Bang, to the formation of
solar systems capable of supporting
life on planets like Earth, to the
evolution of our own Solar System.
Webb launched on Dec. 25th 2021.
It does not orbit around the Earth
like the Hubble Space Telescope, it
orbits the Sun 1.5 million kilometers
(1 million miles) away from the
Earth at what is called the second
Lagrange point or L2.
4First vaccine for pregnant indi-
viduals to prevent RSV in infants
In August, the FDA approved the
first vaccine for use in pregnant
individuals to prevent RSV in infants
from birth through 6 months of age.
Abrysvo is approved for use at 32
through 36 weeks gestational age
of pregnancy. It is administered as
a single dose injection into the
muscle. In clinical trials, Abrysvo
reduced the risk of severe lower
respiratory tract disease (LRTD) by
81.8% within 90 days after birth,
and 69.4% within 180 days after
birth. Within 180 days after birth,
Abrysvo reduced the risk of lower
respiratory tract disease by 57.3%
and by 76.5% for severe LRTD,
when compared with placebo. The
safety of Abrysvo was evaluated in
two studies, and the most reported
side effects were pain at the injec-
tion site, headache, muscle pain and
nausea.

7AI reveals new antibiotics
Over the course of the past
few years, AI has transformed
the field of molecular biolo-
gy. The revolution started
with the AlphaFold algorithm, which
rapidly predicts the complex three-
dimensional structures of proteins,
thus aiding the understanding of
protein functions and the identifi-
cation of drug targets. This year, AI
has achieved another breakthrough,
this time at the other end of the
drug discovery pipeline: several
groups in 2022 have reported the
first successful applications of AI to
identify novel antibiotic drugs.
8Elite mathematicians - The
Fields medal recognises out-
standing mathematical achievement
for existing work. Often described
as the Nobel prize of mathematics,
it is awarded every four years to
recipients under the age of 40.
Congratulations to Prof James
Maynard, who was awarded a Fields
medal this year for his “spectacular
contributions” to analytic number
theory, “which have led to major
advances in the understanding of
the structure of prime numbers and
in Diophantine approximation”. One
of his standout proofs was to prove
the following: there are infinitely
many prime numbers whose decimal
representation does not contain the
digit 7. Such a simple statement to
understand but not very easy to
prove. Maynard joins an elite list of
British mathematicians who have
won the medal.
9Stepping up to education with a
STEM lab In the lab, built with a
fund of Rs 10 lakh, students from
classes 6 to 12
can learn robot-
ics, drone technol-
ogy, 3D printing,
artificial intelligence and digital sci-
ence after school hours. The STEM
lab allows students to gain hands-on
practical training and the skills
required to succeed in the 21stcen-
tury job market. “Everything is the-
oretically impossible until it is done
and this is the lab that will play an
important role in converting theory
into practice for the students in the
future,”. The lab is facilitated to
occupy 25 students at a time and has
one full-time worker at the lab along
with science teachers coming in to
teach. Technological partner Edutech
conducted a two-day session for
around 25 teachers to learn the tech-
nology to teach the students.
10Air pollution particles are shown
to reduce insects’ ability to find
food and a mate, in experiments. This
may be contributing to the dramatic
fall in global insect populations, the
scientists conclude.
11Global warming the world’s
oceans reached a new record
high temperature of 20.96 °C,
exceeding the previous record in
2016. July is also confirmed as hav-
ing been the hottest month on
record for globally averaged surface
air temperatures by a considerable
margin.
12A study estimates that global
warming of 2 °C could result
in the mass deaths of 1 billion peo-
ple by 2100. 13. A meta-analysis
finds that three doses of a covid-19
vaccine offer 69% effectiveness
against long covid, while two doses
offer 37% efficacy.

MAKING
INDIA
PROUD IN
2023
2
023 was a year, in which
India achieved greater
heights in various fields
which include the successful
launch of Chandrayaan-3, becom-
ing the fifth largest economy in
the world, winning two Oscars in
the field of entertainment, the
successful hosting of the G20
summit in a grand manner and
splendid performance by our
sportspersons in various events.
As all the proud Indians would
agree, the most prestigious and
glorious event in the year 2023
for India is the successful launch
of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon.
The speciality of this mission is
that ISRO could touch the South
pole of the moon which no other
space organisations could achieve.
Our scientists never gave up after
the unsuccessful launch of the
Chandrayaan-2. They continuously
worked towards this mission over-
coming many hurdles. Our scien-
tists have proved that with will-
power, determination, and hard
work we can overcome any obsta-
cles. Once again, a big salute to
all the people behind this marvel-
lous achievement which made
each and every
Indian beam with
pride.

INDIA’S NEW PARLIAMENT BUILDING:
A MAJESTIC SYMBOL OF CULTURAL AND POLITICAL PROGRESS
T
he new Parliament Building, a majestic triangular
structure, is located next to the old Parliament
Building, serving as the home of the Lok Sabha,
the Rajya Sabha, and other members of Parliament. It
has replaced the previous colonial structure that was
over a century old. The building has three entrances:
Gyan Dwar (the gate of knowledge), Shakti Dwar (the
gate of power), and Karma Dwar (the gate of karma),
each guarded by six statues. The intricate design of the
building reflects the country’s cultural and spiritual
values. India’s new parliament building was officially
inaugurated on May 28th, 2023 in New Delhi, India.
During the opening ceremony, our honourable Prime
Minister, Narendra Modi, placed a gold-plated sceptre
called Sengol near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair, sym-
bolizing justice and good governance. The building’s
capacity was set to expand due to the delimitation
exercise, scheduled to take place in 2026. The Women’s
Reservation Bill, the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’,
holds great historical significance as it was a long-
pending and now the first bill taken up by the new leg-
islative body and passed successfully. This bill aims to
increase the representation of women in the legislature
and inspire them to play a more significant role in
shaping a self-reliant India.
