In the past, Kerala's dense forests helped retain rainfall from the Western Ghats and slowly release it into rivers, with heavy rain bringing 11500 liters of water per person daily. However, recent droughts now occur even after heavy rain, as deforestation has reduced trees needed to retain water, causing rainfall to reach the sea within 48 hours and lead to water scarcity across districts a few months later. To prevent Kerala from becoming a desert, the government must ban tree cutting in forests and restore the environment to sustainably manage rainfall.
