1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 PROLOGUE
First of all, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to Y’ SHIN
ARCHITECT for accepting me as an intern to carry out my internship with them during
this short period. However, I am able to gain a lot of knowledge in such a short time in
regards to the professional practice in an actual architectural firm. Thus, I would like to
personally thank my supervisor Ms. Chang Ye Shin who is also the director of the firm,
along with the rest of the staff and colleagues for their guidance throughout the course
of my internship as well as giving some tips on how to become a better architect. I
would also like to thank my lecturer Dr. Tamil Salvi for her care and guidance throughout
the entire internship.

2.0 PROJECTS
2.1 HERBALINE BOTANIC, MELAKA
The first project that I was involved in during my internship period, I started off with a
small scale project in the form of a ice-cream stand for the Herbaline Botanic in
Selangor. The client for this project is Mr. C. K. Low. The ice-cream stand is a single
floor stall of 8 square meters with inspiration taken from the concept of the whole site
which is like an island as the buildings are designed in a clustering form. As the ice-
cream stand stands alone as a lone building, louvers are added to act as a shading
device. The roof design is a butterfly roof with rainwater down pipes on both side.
Butterfly roof is proposed as the ice-cream stand can be accessed by customers on
both sides. This prevents heavy water flow from the roof to disrupt customers. These
features makes the stand more user friendly.
I was tasked to produce a new design of the ice-cream stand from an already existing
SketchUp file as reference to get an idea of what the design should or should not be
like. By having a reference, it is also easier for me to develop a new design for the ice-
cream stand. While carrying out this task, I was given advices from Ms. Shin about the
design of the ice-cream stand as well as the importance of incorporating structural
details into the 3D and AutoCAD drawings as it will help other professionals to
understand the drawings/idea more. This definitely improved my knowledge about
structural details in buildings for future use.
In the 6th week of my internship, I was given the task to check the whole SketchUp file
of the Herbaline Botanic project and place the ice-cream stand into the completed
SketchUp file. I also followed a colleague, Ms. Shamini, to send the tender drawings to
the authorities. Here, I learned the process in producing tender documents and the
guidelines that we have to follow.

2.2 NILAI REV 7, NILAI, NEGERI SEMBILAN
The next project I am involved with is the Nilai Rev 7 condominium project located in
Negeri Sembilan. For this project, the client requested for different colour schemes for
the condominium. As the 3D SketchUp for this condominium is already completed, my
task was to come out with different colour scheme to better suit the condominium.
Other than that, I also did the renderings for the condominium as per requested by the
client for a presentation the next week. For this project, I learnt how to render using
SketchUp V-ray renderer as normally I would have used 3Ds Max as my renderer but the
office does not have it. Now, I acquired the skills to render with different softwares as it
is more versatile in the real world.

2.3 KINGDOM, SEMENYIH, SELANGOR
Located in Semenyih, the project’s client is Nirvana Group. The budget of the project was not
disclosed as this project is still just in conceptual phase. My director, Ms. Shin briefed me on the
project. This project is given the name “KINGDOM” and is about 500 acre land. My task for this
project is to propose a layout of the masterplan consisting of infrastructure, landscape,
commercial area, sales gallery and etc. I am to create a presentation for the client meeting on
2nd February 2018. As this is the beginning of the conceptual design stage, over a span of three
weeks was spent coming up with a number of layouts were produced and discussed with the
director, with several changes made to each new proposal. This definitely helps me as a future
architect, as it opens my eyes on designing for the people, rather than just trying to leave a
design statement. As this is a large scale project, functionality is as important as having the
aesthetics to a particular masterplan layout. In the duration of this project, I also enhanced my
photoshop skills as it was needed for better aesthetics on selling the concept of the project.

2.4 HOMECITY, KAJANG, SELANGOR
In the 4th week of my internship, I was given the task to CAD the floor plans according to their
units and also render floor plans for Homecity project located in Kajang. Homecity is terrace
linked housing. There are 3 different types of terraces which are the low-cost, middle cost and
high cost terraces. After finishing the floor plans, I also took part in submitting the drawings with
Sunny (colleague). While carrying out the tasks, I learnt that there is no final design until
construction as there will still be things to change in the design. I also gained knowledge about
the fire protection system in buildings and as the architect it is our responsibility to remind the
client about the safety in a building although it may exceed the cost.

2.5 HERBALINE SQUARE, IPOH, PERAK
Herbaline Square is a five storey building located in Ipoh. The client is Mr. C. K. Low. I
was tasked to produce a 3D drawing of the building based on the AutoCAD drawings
done by Ms. Shamini. A site visit was conducted at the site on Sunday, 4th February
2018. This site visit was to oversee the construction of the building in progress,
particularly the interior of the buildings where there were changes based on the client
and the interior designer. Furthermore, I was able to observe different professionals
coordinating with each other working on the same project, rather than just observing
from the architect’s perspective. We went floor by floor to oversee what changes that
can be made to enhance the aesthetic value of the building as a whole. As the building
was halfway into construction, changes to the building still can be made depending on
the structure of the building and cost the client are willing to give. Being a real project
that is under construction, it is crucial that all parties understands and agrees between
one professional with another and ensure all safety protocols are abided to prevent
potential malfunctions to the building.

2.6 VISTA OUG, KUALA LUMPUR
The next project I am involved with is the Vista OUG located in Kuala Lumpur. This
project is a condominium which consists of a 5 level parking lot, 3 blocks of 25 storey
condominium with 1800 units and facilities such as gym, kindergarten and convenient
store. The client is Vistarene Development Sdn. Bhd. My task for this project is to render
the floor plans for the condominium and landscape. I was also given the task to design
the landscape of the linear park located in the site. From this task, I was able to further
familiarise myself with the photoshop commands to work faster and efficient. I also
learnt how to incorporate the linear park with the condominium in order for the design to
be more green and also creates a buffer zone for the tenants to experience nature.

2.7 MAX HOUSE, TAMAN TASIK SEMENYIH, SELANGOR
Located in Taman Tasik Semenyih, Selongor, Max House is an existing house for client
Mr. Max. For this project, my task was to redraw the layout of the house using AutoCAD.
Reference was given in the form of pictures of the manual drawings of the house when it
was first constructed in 1986. Therefor, the owner, Mr. Max requested for the digital
layout of the building. At the end of this project, I was able to further develop my
AutoCAD skills and also take details in line weights and plotting styles.

On my last day as an intern, I was given the opportunity to tag along for a site visit at
Nalanda, Seri Kembangan. From the time spent on-site, I was able to learn a lot more
about the operations at a construction site while also gaining more knowledge on the
construction process of a particular project. Furthermore, I am able to observe multiple
professionals coordinating with one another to ensure the building is constructed as
intended by the architect. Upon observing how my director, Ar. Shin coordinates with
contractor, engineers and client, I realised that an architect has to know a lot more on
the process of a project before, during and after its construction to be able to manage it
in an efficient and effective manner, as the architect is considered the mastermind in the
grand scheme of any architectural project.

CONCLUSION
To conclude this report, I would like to once again thank everyone that was involved in
helping me accomplish my internship at y’ SHIN ARCHITECT, from my colleagues to my
director. I would like to thank Dr. Salvi once again for her coordination with me
throughout the internship period. I have also gained invaluable knowledge and skills in
the office that the studio could never give. I have not only experienced the operations of
a professional architectural firm, but I have also become more sensitive in regards to
designing not just to give aesthetics but also for functionality, ease of access to the
public and following the by-laws. I have started to dive into the world of architecture,
proper master planning and designing thanks to all my colleagues guiding me
throughout this period. In my opinion, going through this internship is a must for all
students to prepare them for the real world rather than just start working after
graduation without proper experience. Most importantly, I was able to observe each
stage of an architectural project, from the beginning of its design to its contract
documentation stage. These are experiences that are simply unobtainable while in
university.
