Master Painting- Contemporary Interpretation
Assignment:
Using the grid method demonstrated in class, use an old master painting you have
selected as a point of inspiration. We will visit the library and search on line to facilitate
this investigation of Art History. Your finished work, however, is a contemporary
interpretation , which will be indicated by several key changes to the picture elements.
For example: replace faces and figures with personal friends or newsworthy
personalities, substitute updated technology for older ones, add a modern skyline to a
landscape. Be sure to use source material creatively, working from varied photographic
sources. For example, if you wish to add a portrait of a friend to the piece, obtain a
photograph that you can refer to while transferring the image to the drawing. If you want
to draw a modern vehicle among horse-drawn buggies, you can find images of cars in
any auto-enthusiast magazine or online. These are only a few suggestions, and the
options are wide open as far as how this assignment can be interpreted. Pay careful
attention to the overall effect in narrative and meaning that your alterations create- be
sure that your changes produce a desired rather than accidental effect.
You will have more time than previous projects to work on this assignment.
