Open scholarship, like open source software, is changing research by making it more collaborative, efficient and sustainable. It allows research to be openly accessible and debugged more easily. Studies show much published research is not reproducible. Open scholarship provides more stakeholders and public support while potentially decreasing costs and barriers to entry over time. Sustainability models include professional services, crowdfunding and leveraging economies of scale since costs of publishing are much lower than current commercial publishers charge. The future of research is in our hands to support open access options and alternatives to impact factors.

Medical visualization papers often deal with data that is interpreted by medical domain experts in a research or clinical context. Since visualizations are by definition designed to be interpreted by a human observer, often an evaluation is performed to confirm the utility of a presented method. The exact type of evaluation required is not always clear, especially to new researchers. With this paper, we hope to clarify the different types of evaluation methods that exist and provide practical guidelines to choose the most suitable evaluation method to increase the value of the work.

The Green Park Collaborative (GPC) has developed a new tool to help health care decision makers confidently and consistently use Real World Evidence (RWE) when making tough coverage and care choices. Called RWE Decoder, the spreadsheet-based assessment tool lets users review and evaluate all existing studies and evidence for both rigor and relevance. Informed by these factors, users can assess study quality, and generate a visual summary to help gauge the evidence under review.
Published RWE studies developed from data-rich electronic medical records or medical claims data are increasingly available from health care systems. However, the quality of this research can vary widely, and payers, clinicians and other health care decision makers often dismiss it out of hand. RWE Decoder and its associated user guide and framework, offer a thoughtful approach to helping these decision makers assess whether RWE studies address their questions and can appropriately guide their choices.

Since the last two decennia, Wageningen UR Library has been involved in bibliometric analyses for the evaluation of scientific output of staff, chair groups and research institutes of Wageningen UR. In these advanced bibliometric analyses several indicator scores, such as the number of publications, number of citations and citation impacts, are calculated. For a fair comparison of scientific output from staff, chair groups or research institutes (that each work in a different scientific discipline with specific publication and citation habits) scores of the measured bibliometric indicators are normalized against average trend (or baseline) scores per research field. For the collection of scientific output that is subjected to the bibliometric analyses the repository Wageningen Yield (WaY) is used. This repository is filled from the research registration system Metis in which meta data for scientific output is registered by the secretaries of the research groups of Wageningen UR. By the application of a connection between the meta data of publications in WaY and citation scores in Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science, custom-made analyses on the scientific output and citation impact of specific entities from Wageningen UR can be performed fast and efficiently. Moreover, a timely registration of new scientific output is stimulated (to ensure their inclusion in future bibliometric analyses) and the quality of meta data in WaY is checked by the library staff and by the research staff from the research entities under investigation, thus promoting communication between the library and customers.

Independent Study - College of Wooster Research (2023-2024)
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
