Twitter research to date has focussed mainly on the study of isolated events, as described for example by specific hashtags or keywords relating to elections, natural disasters, public events, and other moments of heightened activity in the network. This limited focus is determined in part by the limitations placed on large-scale access to Twitter data by Twitter, Inc. itself. This research presents the first ever comprehensive study of a national Twittersphere as an entity in its own right. It examines the structure of the follower network amongst some 4 million Australian Twitter accounts and the dynamics of their day-to-day activities, and explores the Australian Twittersphere’s engagement with specific recent events.

Nowadays, social networks and media, such as Facebook, Twitter & Co, affect our communication and our exchange of knowledge more than ever. But which additional benefits can offer social media apart from easy interaction with friends and how can they be used to create additional value for companies and institutions? These are the questions that the area Social Computing at Know-Center addresses in detail.
In this talk we will give a brief overview of industry and non-industry related research projects which we have been involved in recently with my group, Social Computing at the Know-Center, in the context of Big Data and social media. In particular, the talk will highlight specific research project outcomes and work-in-progress that make use of social media data to help people to explore the vastly growing overloaded information space more efficiently.

Joining the ‘buzz’ : the role of social media in raising research visibility: Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics/article level metrics). Altmetrics measures aspects of the impact of a work, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media.
This webinar (based on a presentation of the same name at the LIASA conference on 24th September 2014) gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University, Grahamstown, librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution.

Keynote address by Anatoliy Gruzd at the 2017 Altmetrics Conference in Toronto, Canada (Sep 27, 2017)
Abstract
Arguably, even the most innovative ideas take time to catch on. Ideas that seem obvious today, at one point were obscure oddities known only to a select few. Washing your hands, airbags in cars, the internet - none of these ideas were accepted immediately. New ideas need time to incubate, the process of switching from old ideas to new is not seamless nor is it linear. In today’s social media-connected world, even though ideas can spread quickly and more efficiently than ever before, they are now competing for attention with a multitude of other ideas, memes, tweets, snaps, YouTube videos and news (fake and real). Conceptually, if social media is a network of highways on which ideas and people travel, altmetrics are the billboard or traffic signs on these highways that can help interested parties to discover new ideas or re-discover ideas left on the side of the road. While often neglected, the above metaphor is meant to illuminate the important role of altmetrics for researchers, innovators and funders seeking to track the impacts of new ideas, as well as for the many idea consumers looking for emerging and novel insights.
This talk will outline the current state of altmetrics research and how altmetrics are being commonly calculated and used by different stakeholders. It will also explore the social network properties of ideas and how these properties might be used to customize altmetrics for different audiences and uses. The keynote will conclude by calling for the development of training strategies to provide learning opportunities for researchers and administrators from various fields to acquire necessary digital literacy skills so that they better understand how altmetrics are measured and how they can be interpreted for decision making. The keynote will also call on altmetrics developers and researchers to create algorithms and data collection strategies that are less prone to manipulation by the rapid rise of social bots.

Disseminating Scientific Papers via Twitter: Practical Insights and Research ...SC CTSI at USC and CHLA
About one-fifth of current scientific papers are being shared on Twitter. With 230 million active users and 24 percent of the U.S. online population using the microblogging platform, hopes are high that tweets mentioning scientific articles reflect some type of interest by the general public and might even be able to measure the societal impact of research. However, early studies show that most of the engagement with scientific papers on Twitter takes place among members of academia and thus reflects visibility within the scientific community rather than impact on society. At the same time, some tweets do not involve any human engagement but rather are generated automatically by Twitter bots.
This talk focuses on identifying audiences on Twitter and teaches participants how to collect, analyze, visualize, and interpret diffusion patterns of scientific articles on Twitter. The course provides an overview of Altmetrics research and present the challenges – including methods and first results – of classifying Twitter user groups, with a particular focus on identifying members of the general public and measuring societal impact. The course will provide hands-on exercises and instructions on how to analyze by whom, when, and how scientific papers are shared on Twitter.

at the Northern Data Journalism Conference (NODA16) Academic Pre-Conference
This presentation aims at exploring the existing research literature on data journalism. Over the past years this emerging journalistic practice has been established and has also attracted significant attention from journalism scholars. It was time to take a closer look at the existing research literature in order to find out more about how this literature has been developing. Where are the research gaps and what does the future of data journalism research hold? These questions were tackled by carefully selecting a corpus of scholarly literature with empirical foundation in data journalism. This corpus was analyzed with a mixed method approach using qualitative and quantitative techniques. In this way the development of the literature over time could be illustrated and the most influential publications could be identified. Often-used theoretical frameworks and the applied research designs hinted at certain tendencies and gaps in the research literature on data journalism, for example, the dominance of qualitative research design over quantitative ones. Also, a shortcoming of cross-national investigations and ethnographic studies became visible.

Sinds de publicatie van het “Altmetrics manifesto” door Jason Priem en de zijnen heeft dit onderwerp een grote vlucht genomen. In het huidige bibliometrics landschap krijgt het onderzoek naar andere mogelijkheden om impact van publicaties en onderzoek te meten een prominente plaats. Tegenwoordig willen onderzoekers niet alleen maar beoordeeld worden op basis van Impact Factoren en versterken zij de roep om alternatieve methoden om impact te beoordelen. In het kader van onderzoeksondersteuning kunnen bibliotheken in dit domein een nieuwe en belangrijke rol spelen. In deze sessie worden de ontwikkelingen tegen het licht gehouden en sterke en zwakke punten blootgelegd. Tijdens de workshop wordt ingegaan op de verschillende indicatoren voor het bepalen van de impact van tijdschriften, artikelen, onderzoeksgroepen en onderzoekers. Tools, methoden en het laatste onderzoek komen aan bod.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
