1. Sermon on the Mt (Mat 5:21-32)
Matt 5
21 Ye have heardthat it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill;
and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say
unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be
in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca,
shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall
be in danger of hell fire.
…whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment…
Num 35:15-24 15 These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the
children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among
them: that every one that killeth any person unawares mayflee
thither. 16 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he
die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 17
And if he smite him with throwinga stone, wherewith he may die,
and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to
death. 18 Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer
shall surely be put to death. 19 The revenger of blood himself shall
slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him. 20 But if
he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by layingof wait, that he die;
21 Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote
him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of
blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him. 22 But if he
thrust him suddenlywithout enmity, or have cast upon him any thing
without layingof wait, 23 Or with any stone, wherewith a man may
die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his
enemy, neither sought his harm: 24 Then the congregation shall
2. judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood accordingto
these judgments:
Deut 19:15-21 15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for
any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of
two witnesses,or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be
established. 16 If a false witness rise up againstany man to testify
againsthim that which is wrong; 17 Then both the men, between
whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the
priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; 18 And the
judges shall make diligentinquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a
false witness, and hath testified falselyagainsthis brother; 19 Then
shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his
brother: so shalt thou put the evil awayfrom among you. 20 And
those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth
commit no more any such evil among you. 21 And thine eye shall
not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for
hand, foot for foot.
Matt 19:17-19 17 And he said unto him, Why callestthou me good?
there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into
life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus
said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy
father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matt 5
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a
cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his
brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say,
Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
… whosoever is angrywith his brother…
3. 1John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye
know that no murderer hath eternal life abidingin him.
Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin,
when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
…whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause…
The modern, corrupt English versions remove the words “without a cause”
and make Jesus Christ guilty of sin. Mark 3:3-5 says that Jesus was angry,
but it was not “without a cause.” Paul writes that a man should be angry
about some things, but do not sin in your anger (Eph. 4:26).
Mark 3:3-5 3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered
hand, Stand forth. 4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good
on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they
held their peace. 5 And when he had looked round about on them
with anger, beinggrieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith
unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and
his hand was restored whole as the other.
Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon
your wrath:
Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire;
hating even the garmentspotted by the flesh.
…but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
The Apostle Paul and Jesus Christ both called people, “Fools,”but they were
not in danger of hell fire (Luke 24:25; 1 Corinth. 15:36). Once again, this is
a millennial context.
Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to
believe all that the prophets have spoken:
1Cor 15:36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened,
except it die:
4. Matt 5
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberestthat
thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled
to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversaryquickly, whiles thou art in the way with him;
lest at any time the adversarydeliver thee to the judge, and the judge
deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 VerilyI say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou
hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Of Incense
Exod 30:1 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of
shittim wood shalt thou make it.
Brazen, or Altar of Burnt Offering
Exod 40:6 And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offeringbefore
the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it
to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is
the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Matt 5
27 Ye have heardthat it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adulterywith her alreadyin his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it
is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that
thy whole body shouldbe cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is
profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy
whole body should be cast into hell.
5. During the Millennium, if you have problems with looking and lusting after
women, then it is better for you to pluck out your eye than to be cast into
hell (Is. 34:5-10). This is NOT the casein the church age.
Isa 34:5-10 5 For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall
come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.
6 The sword of the LORD is filledwith blood, it is made fat with fatness,
and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams:
for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of
Idumea.
7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the
bulls; and their landshall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat
with fatness.
8 For it is the day of the LORD'S vengeance, and the year of recompences
for the controversyof Zion.
9 And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof
into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burningpitch.
10 It shall not be quenchednight nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up
for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass
through it for ever and ever.
Matt 5
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put awayhis wife, let him give her a
writingof divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the
cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall
marry her that is divorcedcommitteth adultery.
Mark 10:11-12 11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put awayhis
wife, and marry another, committeth adulteryagainst her. 12 And if a
woman shall put away her husband, and be marriedto another, she
committeth adultery.
6. Mark does not have the complete statement (Mk. 10:11,12). The complete
statement includes “…saving for the cause of fornication…” Therefore, it is not
adultery to divorce and remarry if your spouse has “stepped out” with another
person sexually. This passage is not about engagement (Deut. 24:1-4). All this will
be covered in more detail in chapter 19 of Matthew.
Marriage/Divorce/Remarriage
To understanda difficultsubject in the bible it is best to start with the
easiest to understandpassages, then move into the more difficult.
There is one complete chapter in 1Cor. that deals only with this subject.
In 40verses of 1 Cor. 7 Paul gives us 8 steps to follow:
1). Stay single
1 Corinthians 7:7-8
For I wouldthat all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his
proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I say therefore to the unmarriedandwidows, It is good for them if they
abide even as I.
Matthew 19:12
For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb:
and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there
be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of
heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
1 Corinthians 7:32
But I wouldhave you without carefulness. He that is unmarriedcareth for
the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
2). Marry if you cannot contain the desire.
1 Corinthians 7:9
But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to
burn.
The word 'burn' means a strong desire- Romans 1:27 burned in their lust
one toward another;
3). After marriage don'tdepart.
7. 1 Corinthians 7:10
And unto the marriedI command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife
depart from her husband:
Matthew 19:8
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered
you to put away your wives: but from the beginningit was not so.
4). Let the unsaved spousedivorce not the saved.
1 Corinthians 7:13
And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be
pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
1 Corinthians 7:15-16
But if the unbelievingdepart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not
under bondage in such cases: but God hath calledus to peace. 16 For what
knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how
knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
1 Peter 3:1-2
1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any
obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the
conversation of the wives;
While they behold your chaste conversation coupledwith fear.
The message is the saved spouse should fear for the unsavedone, knowing
their end in eternity in Hell. And this fear shouldencourage them to stay in
the marriage andlive a careful life as a wittiness to the unsavedspouse.
2 Corinthians 5:11
Knowingtherefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are
made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your
consciences.
5). If divorced stay single.
1 Corinthians 7:27
Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a
wife? seek not a wife.
8. If the unsavedspouse divorces, start back at point #1. Your "seeking"
should not be for a spouse Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these
things shall be added unto you.
If God wants to bless you with a spouse it will be in the process of seeking
the kingdom of God. Psalms 84:11 no good thing will he withholdfrom
them that walk uprightly.
Proverbs 18:22
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing,
and obtaineth favour of the Lord.
6). It is not sin to remarry.
1 Corinthians 7:28
But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath
not sinned.
If the unsavedspouse leaves, and God wants to bless you with a new
spouse, it is not sin to remarry.
Amos 3:3
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
7). If you remarry, only marry an equally minded Christian.
1 Corinthians 7:39
....at liberty to be married...only in the Lord.
2 Corinthians 6:14
Be ye not unequallyyoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship
hath righteousness with unrighteousness?and what communion hath light
with darkness?
8). A second marriage will have problems.
1 Corinthians 7:28
But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath
not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare
you.
9. Reasons for remarriage:
ď‚· Death- Rom. 7:2-3
ď‚· Divorce- 1 Cor. 7:15
ď‚· Fornication- Mat. 19:9,5:32
Letter of the Law vs spirit of the Law:
Romans 7:6
But now we are deliveredfrom the law, that being dead wherein we were
held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of
the letter.
Jesus compares both in Mat. 5 even here he draws the line at fornication.
OT Law:
Vs21 thou shalt not kill
NT spirit of Law:
Matthew 5:22
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a
cause shall be in danger of the judgment
OT Law:
Vs 27 shalt not commit adultery
NT spirit of Law:
Matthew 5:28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adulterywith her alreadyin his heart.
OT Law:
Vs 31 if you want to put away a wife give her a writingof divorcement
NT spirit of the Law
Matthew 5:32
But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife,
saving for the cause of fornication,
causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is
divorcedcommitteth adultery.
10. When Jesus is questionedby the Pharisees about divorce (Mat.19) he is
talking to men who know the law. He tells them the things Moses allowed
in the OT are contraryto the spirit of the law; With one exception (Mat.
19:9) fornication-an unfaithful spouse.
To understandhow this differs from the OT we need to see the laws for
divorce in the OT.
Deut. 24:1 If a mans wife is no longer pleasingin his eyes he can divorce
Deut. 22:17-21 Kill a bride if she cant prove she is a virgin.
Deut. 24:3 If husband hate her he can divorce.
The Pharisees are asking Jesus in Mat. 19:3 Is it lawful for a man to put away
his wife for EVERY CAUSE (any reason he wants). Jesus answers the only
acceptable cause is fornication (Mat. 19:9)
Now the question is Why is fornication an acceptable reason for divorce?
The answer is because of what marriage pictures. Earthlythings are a
picture of Heavenly (2 Cor. 4:18).
Moses killed an Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. But God still used
him to lead His people (Israel). However, when Moses was told to speak to
a rock to make water, he disobeyed and hit the rock; for that God killedhim
before he could reach the promised land. ( Ex. 17:6, Num. 20:7-11, Deut.
34:4). I would have thought the worst thing in Moses life was when he
murderedthe Egyptian. But In Gods eyes the thing that deserved death was
when Moses messed up the picture God was buildingfor a people to see
2,000 yrs in the future.
1 Corinthians 10:2
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloudand in the sea;
1 Corinthians 10:4
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual
Rock that followedthem: and that Rock was Christ. (Deut. 32:31)
Christ was smitten once to give us the water of life. When Moses hit the
rock the second time it broke the picture.
The Picture should have been:
Ex. 17:6 Moses hit the Rock= Christ died once Heb. 10:14
11. Num. 20:8 Moses speak to the rock the second time= With the mouth
confession is made unto salvation Rom. 10:10.
This is just one example to show how serious God is about things that
picture eternal truths.
Now see what marriage pictures in the Bible:
1 Corinthians 6:14-18
And God hath both raisedup the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own
power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then
take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God
forbid. 16 What? know ye not that he which is joinedto an harlotis one
body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. 17 But he that is joined unto the
Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Everysin that a man doeth is withoutthe body; but he
that committeth fornication sinneth againsthis own body.
2 Corinthians 11:12
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which
desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and
gave himself for it;
Ephesians 5:32
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Matthew 19:4-9
And he answeredand said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which
made them at the beginningmade them male and female, 5 And said, For
this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife:
and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but
one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put
asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a
writingof divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses
because of the hardness of your hearts sufferedyou to put away your
12. wives: but from the beginningit was not so. 9 And I say unto you,
Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, andshall
marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put
away doth commit adultery.
God=headof all
Husband=Christ
Wife=Church
An interestingpoint:
In the Bible the man is the only one given the power to "give a writingof
divorcement". In 1 Cor. 7 we see the wife "depart" but not give a writingof
divorcement. I think the reason for this is in the OT God has a bride (Israel)
and he divorces her (Hos. 9:1, 2:2-3) then remarries her (reference to the
Millennium).
