THE WONDER? AND WONDER! OF WATER IN THE
WORD OF GOD
Introduction-
The Context of all doctrine is the ENTIRE
Bible
Acts 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto
you all the counsel of God.
Acts 26:22 Having therefore obtained help of God,
I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small
and great, saying none other things than those
which the prophets and Moses did say should
come:
1Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened unto
them for ensamples: and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are
come.
I. A Pretext- “Water”
A Text without Subtext or Context is a PRETEXT.

Mark 16:15-16
Mark 16:15-16 15 And he said unto them, Go
ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to
every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be
saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
The Campbellites love the passage because they think it
establishes baptism as a requirement for salvation, even
though verse sixteen states that damnation comes to
those who don’t believe. When you run them out of Acts
2:38,
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent,
and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
then they run to Acts 22:16,
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and
be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on
the name of the Lord.
then to Galatians 3:26-27,
Gal 3:26-27 26 For ye are all the children of God
by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as
3. 3
have been baptized into Christ have put on
Christ.
then to I Peter 3:21,
1Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even
baptism doth also now save us (not the putting
away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a
good conscience toward God,) by the
resurrection of Jesus Christ:
then to John 3:5.
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, Except a man be born of water and of the
Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
II. The Subtext Of “Water”
The Subtext of “water”- detailed yet CONCEALED
1Pet 1:10-12 10 Of which salvation the prophets
have enquired and searched diligently, who
prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the
Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when
it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and
the glory that should follow.
4. 4
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto
themselves, but unto us they did minister the
things, which are now reported unto you by them
that have preached the gospel unto you with the
Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things
the angels desire to look into.
Num 8:7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to
cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon
them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let
them wash their clothes, and so make themselves
clean.
Num 19:2 This is the ordinance of the law which
the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the
children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer
without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon
which never came yoke:
Num 19:9 And a man that is clean shall gather up
the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the
camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the
congregation of the children of Israel for a water of
separation: it is a purification for sin.
Num 19:17-18 17 And for an unclean person they
shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of
5. 5
purification for sin, and running water shall be put
thereto in a vessel: 18 And a clean person shall take
hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon
the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the
persons that were there, and upon him that
touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a
grave:
Num 31:23 Every thing that may abide the fire, ye
shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be
clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the
water of separation: and all that abideth not the
fire ye shall make go through the water.
Deut 21:4 And the elders of that city shall bring
down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is
neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the
heifer's neck there in the valley:
Ps 51:2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and
cleanse me from my sin.
Jer 4:14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from
wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long
shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
6. 6
Matt 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the
cup and of the platter, but within they are full of
extortion and excess.
John 2:5 His mother saith unto the servants,
Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
John 3:25 Then there arose a question between
some of John's disciples and the Jews about
purifying.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and
be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the
name of the Lord.
Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and
the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Jas 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to
you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your
hearts, ye double minded.
1Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism
doth also now save us (not the putting away of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good

conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of
Jesus Christ:
III. The Context Of “Water”
The Context of “water” revealed
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye
think ye have eternal life: and they are they which
testify of me.
Num 19:7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes,
and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and
afterward he shall come into the camp, and the
priest shall be unclean until the even.
1Cor 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh
and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God;
neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
Matt 3:1-2 1 In those days came John the
Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of
Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand. (Luke 7:29-30; Act 19:3)
8. 8
Matt 4:17 From that time Jesus began to
preach, and to say, Repent: for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand.
John 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word
which I have spoken unto you.
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it
with the washing of water by the word,
IV. Application
How do you apply the Water to the subtexts in your
life?
Num 19:7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and
he shall bathe his flesh in water…
Num 19:8 …wash his clothes in water…
Num 19:9 …a water of separation: it is a purification
for sin.
Num 19:13 …because the water of separation was
not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his
uncleanness is yet upon him.
9. 9
Num 19:17 …take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of
purification for sin, and running water shall be put
thereto in a vessel:
Num 19:18 And a clean person shall take hyssop, and
dip it in the water, and sprinkle it…
Num 19:19 …and bathe himself in water, and shall be
clean at even.
Num 19:20 …that soul shall be cut off from among
the congregation, because …the water of separation
hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
Num 19:21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto
them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation
shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water
of separation shall be unclean until even.
In Numbers 19 we are told 9 times the importance and
purpose of water; watch what happens in Chapter 20
when Israel does not have water.
Num 20:1-5 1 Then came the children of Israel, even
the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the
first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and
Miriam died there, and was buried there.
10. 10
2 And there was no water for the congregation: and
they gathered themselves together against Moses
and against Aaron.
3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake,
saying, Would God that we had died when our
brethren died before the LORD!
4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of
the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle
should die there?
5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of
Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place
of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates;
neither is there any water to drink.
