An Intruder at Dinner- Matt 22
1. 1
An Intruder at Dinner
Matt 22:2
2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which
made a marriage for his son,
Matt 22:4
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which
are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and
my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the
marriage.
Matt 22:11
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there
a man which had not on a wedding garment:
A celebration feast is often the picture of the union of God
and man.
While this is a joyous invitation it is not optional- your life
depends on your response to it.
Prov 9:1-5 Wisdom hath builded her houseā¦
2 She hath killed her beastsā¦ she hath also furnished
her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the
highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that
wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Comeā¦
Isa 25:6 And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts
make unto all people a feast of fat thingsā¦
2. 2
John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana
of Galileeā¦
John 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana
of Galileeā¦
Rev 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to
him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife
hath made herself ready.
Matt 22:3
3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to
the wedding: and they would not come.
God sent His Prophets first.
Acts 7:51-52
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye
do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so
do ye.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers
persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed
before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have
been now the betrayers and murderers:
ā¦and they would not come.
When the sacrifice was offered, and the dinner was ready,
He next sent His Apostles.
Matt 22:4
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which
are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and

my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the
marriage.
Matt 22:5
5 But they made light of itā¦
Acts 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon
the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far
as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word
to none but unto the Jews only.
Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said,
It was necessary that the word of God should first have
been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and
judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to
the Gentiles.
Acts 26:17-29 Saying, Go unto this people, and say,
Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and
seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their
ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed;
lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their
ears, and understand with their heart, and should be
converted, and I should heal them.
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of
God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed,
and had great reasoning among themselves.
So, the kings wrath will fall on them āto the uttermostā.

1Thess 2:15-16 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and
their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they
please not God, and are contrary to all men:
16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might
be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come
upon them to the uttermost.
The ancient wedding feasts invitation
was accompanied by a certain garment, peculiar to the
occasion,
anyone who came without it was considered an intruder.
In our passage the king will discover and uncover an intruder
at the party.
I. How is the Intruder Discovered? (v. 11)
Matt 22:11
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there
a man which had not on a wedding garment:
God knows and notes all.
Rev 2:1-2 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write;
These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his
right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden
candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience,
and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and
thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are
not, and hast found them liars:
The intruder was discovered by the king.
5. 5
Matt 22:11
11 And when the king came in to see the guestsā¦
Jer 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I
shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and
earth? saith the LORD.
1Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on
his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I
have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD
looketh on the heart.
Men may hide themselves right now and feel safe. But one
day the king will say āready or not here I comeā and all will
be discovered!
Prov 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
beholding the evil and the good.
Prov 15:11 Hell and destruction are before the LORD:
how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
Amos 4:2-4 The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness,
that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take
you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
3 And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that
which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace,
saith the LORD.
4 Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply
transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning,
and your tithes after three years:

II. How is the Intruder Tried? (v. 12)
Matt 22:12
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither
not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
The king exposes his āfriendshipā.
Ps 50:21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence;
thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as
thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before
thine eyes.
āhow camest thou in hither not having a wedding
garment?ā
This is the one regulation-- a wedding garment.
John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth
not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up
some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
There is no value in winning if you are a cheater.
Ps 50:16-17 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast
thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest
take my covenant in thy mouth?
17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words
behind thee.
Quitters never win.
1John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of
us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have

continued with us: but they went out, that they might be
made manifest that they were not all of us.
III. How does the intruder respond? (v. 12)
āā¦And he was speechless.ā

saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become
guilty before God.

her mouth.
IV. How is the Intruder Sentenced? (v. 13)
Matt 22:13
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot,
and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there
shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matt 13:30,37-41 Let both grow together until the
harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers,
Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in
bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the
good seed is the Son of man;
8. 8
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of
the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the
wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is
the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the
fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they
shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and
them which do iniquity;
Matt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left
hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire,
prepared for the devil and his angels:
John 12:35-36 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little
while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light,
lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in
darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be
the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and
departed, and did hide himself from them.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I
am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not
walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Job 27:8-10 For what is the hope of the hypocrite,
though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
9 Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always
call upon God?
9. 9
Matt 24:50-51 The lord of that servant shall come in a day
when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is
not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his
portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
One day the marriage supper will be ready, and all men will
be ādressed for dinnerā; some to enjoy the food and
fellowship; others to become dinner.
Rev 19:17-18 And I saw an angel standing in the sun;
and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that
fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves
together unto the supper of the great God;
18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of
captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of
horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all
men, both free and bond, both small and great.
