Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for 75-80% of cases. Microscopically, it is characterized by solid white firm lesions that are often multifocal with calcification. Under the microscope, it displays complex, branching papillae lined by cuboidal cells with overlapping nuclei resembling "Orphan Annie Eyes" along with nuclear grooves, intranuclear inclusions, psammoma bodies, and possible squamous metaplasia.
