3. Classification of Fires
As per IS 2190:2010 basic types of fires are
grouped into four classes:
• Class A: solid combustible materials of organic
nature such as wood, paper, rubber, plastic
etc. where the cooling effect of water is is
essential for the extinction of fire.
4. • Class B: fires involving flammable liquids or liquefiable
solids where a blanketing effect is essential.
• Class C: fires involving flammable gases under pressure
including liquefied gases, where it is necessary to
inhibit the burning gas with a fast rate with an inert gas,
powder or vaporizing liquid for extinguishment.
• Class D: fires involving combustible metals such as
magnesium, aluminum, zinc, potassium, sodium etc.
when burning metals are reactive to water and water
containing agents and in certain cases carbon dioxide,
halogenated hydrocarbons and ordinary dry powders.
These fires require special media and technique to
extinguish.

How do they work?
10.
11. FIRE is a GOOD SLAVE but a BAD
MASTER
• See for yourself
12. How to use?
• Know the source of fire (Class of the fire)
first….
• If electrical fire, cut-off the mains….
• Make sure that the extinguisher is charged….
• Keep the exit of the room at your back….
• Assess if you are confident of using the
extinguisher to put off the fire…
13. How to use?
• Pull the pin
• Aim at the base of the fire
• Squeeze the lever
• Sweep from left to right
• Remember the Acronym PASS
14. IN CASE YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT
TO PUT OFF THE FIRE
• Close the door of the room after ensuring no
one is trapped inside. (it will hold the fire for
some time).
• SHOUT for help
• Shut down the main power source.
• Do not use lifts, escalators, etc.
• Use STAIRS…
• Call fire brigade at 101 or 108 for any
emergency
15. Remember!!!!
• Portable fire extinguishers can only be used
for fires in their incipient stage.
• They last for 20-30 sec on an average.
• Your life is more precious than any material
thing.
