SAFETY CULTURE
“Safety culture” – Moral, social behavioral norms of an
Organization which describes the way in which safety is
managed in the workplace and often reflects "the
attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that employees
share in relation to safety”.

“Organizations with a positive safety culture are characterized by
communications founded on mutual trust, by shared perceptions of
the importance of safety and by confidence in the efficacy of
preventive measures”.

WHY WORLD CLASS SAFETY
Construction industry is not the same as it was earlier, Globalization
has given it a revised definition - Indian construction is going
international and international players are marching towards India.

We are the best in class in Domestic Environment with Domestic Customers
competing with Domestic Players,
                                           but..
When we go International / getting associated with International customers in
domestic environment. The Safety Standards differ..!, Our competitors vary..!!,
Evaluation Criteria varies..!!! All players are building their HSE capabilities..!!

CAPACITY BUILDING OF SUB CONTRACTORS

Bring Sub Contractors on Board with L&T’s Safety Vision.
Evaluate them in terms of HSE & make it as one of the
qualification criteria.
Motivate them by means of creating opportunities &
competition among them across Sites, Clusters, Regions etc
Recognize them by means of Awards / Rewards,
Certificates etc.
Penalties on violation/bad performance.

TRAINING ACROSS ORGANISATION & WORKERS
Display of posters, warning signs and policies are not
enough. Educate & provide regular information about
safety.

Training should be ongoing throughout an individual’s time
in the organization.

People who are properly trained in their jobs are aware of
hazards associated with their role & those they supervise
are less likely to suffer or cause injury.

SAFETY CULTURE “Safety culture” – Moral, social behavioral norms of an Organization which describes the way in which safety is managed in the workplace and often reflects "the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that employees share in relation to safety”. “Organizations with a positive safety culture are characterized by communications founded on mutual trust, by shared perceptions of the importance of safety and by confidence in the efficacy of preventive measures”. We are the best in class in Domestic Environment with Domestic Customers competing with Domestic Players, but.. When we go International / getting associated with International customers in domestic environment. The Safety Standards differ..!, Our competitors vary..!!, Evaluation Criteria varies..!!!   • 14. MEASURING SYSTEM 1 FATAL 10 LTIs / MTIs 30 First Aids 300 Near Misses Bottom of Pyramid is missing (mostly not reported) giving false trigger on other indicators. How can we improve the reporting?? Existing Proposed Frequency Rate : No. Of LTI x 10 ^6 No. Of (LTI + MTI) Man hours worked Total No. of Incidents* * - Total No. Of incidents should include “Near Miss & First Aid” also.   • 15. CAPACITY BUILDING OF SUB CONTRACTORS Bring Sub Contractors on Board with L&T’s Safety Vision. Evaluate them in terms of HSE & make it as one of the qualification criteria. Motivate them by means of creating opportunities & competition among them across Sites, Clusters, Regions etc Recognize them by means of Awards / Rewards, Certificates etc. Penalties on violation/bad performance.   • 16. TRAINING ACROSS ORGANISATION & WORKERS Display of posters, warning signs and policies are not enough. Educate & provide regular information about safety. Training should be ongoing throughout an individual’s time in the organization. People who are properly trained in their jobs are aware of hazards associated with their role & those they supervise are less likely to suffer or cause injury. North Region – New Delhi

  • 18. THE WAY FORWARD… Equip the organization to embrace the change. Conduct Perception Survey. Time bound assessment to implement the change & amend the policies to accept the change. Establish a Good Safety Culture Attitudes Environment Systems Each organization needs to consider & concentrate on the above aspects in developing & nurturing a safe culture that suits the organization & individuals within it.
