Identity And Perception
Living in a digital world where information is at the tip of our fingers, we are able to fulfill our
curiosity for any culture through a search on the internet. We often question the strange behaviors of
those who are unfamiliar to us, yet we rarely question our own perception and treat our culture as a
sure thing. To understand how my Taiwanese heritage influences my identity and perception, I
interviewed my parents, Tien–Hua (55) and Charlotte(52), and my grandmother, Wen–Li (80), via
phone calls and video calls. The atmosphere of the interviews, as expected, were mainly causal with
my parents and formal with my grandmother. While there were several indicators that suggest the
shaping of my identity and perception, nationality and filial piety were the most influential ones.
Possessing a strong sense of nationality has always been utmost important in my family due to the
complicated relationship between China and Taiwan. As I was brought up by two proud Taiwanese
parents and had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When connecting cultural heritage to the shaping of individual's perception and identity, clues of
how we might approach intercultural relationships are revealed. Whether we are more opened or
closed in forming relationships with people from different culture, we should not be quick to assert
our incapability of creating close intercultural bonds because after all, our perception and identity is
learned, and we can certainly unlearned it if we "get comfortable with the uncomfortable". Despite
the fact that it is impossible to learn all the rules, beliefs, and values of every culture around world,
we can certainly become culturally sensitive if we let go of fear, judgements, ethnocentrism, or
anything that impedes the development of intercultural relationship. As we carry this beneficial tool
with us, we can soon find ourselves making friends everywhere we

Why I Want For The People Who Will Influence My Identity...
Ever since I was little, my mom has repeated little sayings to my brothers and I. One of her favorites
was, "You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose."
While this research project is not headed in the direction of nose picking, as I have gotten older, this
quote has caused me to reflect on the choices I have made in terms of who I am. If I do indeed hold
the power to choose the people who will influence my identity the strongest, why did I not choose
those who have allowed me to be authentic until now?
What is authenticity? "Being authentic means something like living in accordance with one's own
unique values and ideals," but it is greater than simply being oneself, it is "resisting the imposition
of the values and ideals of others" (Pierce 441) as well. Therefore, authenticity is also neglecting to
succumb to the beliefs of others to stay true to one's own beliefs. However, this does not mean that
authenticity is static, "an individual should engage in a process of constructing his personhood....
His task in life becomes searching for his true personhood" (381). Personhood should be a journey
of finding oneself, figuring out who one is and what one believes in. The act of evolving is part of
the discovery, but when "their acts are guided by other people's ideas of who they should be" (379)
it leads to inauthenticity because the change is made solely to fit in. All in all, authenticity is based
heavily on truth, because "[it]

Personal Development Skills
From infancy to adulthood, a person's emotional development skills differ on many levels; for
example: a person may have the ability to manage a whole department but lack a few skills
necessary to manage the people who work in that department. I feel as though I can relate to this
issue due to the fact that even though my employees get their jobs done, I sometimes sense that they
do not consider me their manager because I was once their co–worker.
Managing people
The way managers and supervisors treat their employees determine the rate of retention and
turnover. They interact daily with people who have individual ... Show more content on

Expect others to succeed. It becomes a self–fulfilling prophecy when you believe others are loyal,
dedicated and doing a good job.
Help others see how they will benefit from doing a job. This is when they truly become motivated.
Do not avoid talking to a poor performer. It hurts them, the organization and yourself if the situation
is not dealt with.
Do not over control others. It is frustrating for them and time consuming for you.
Focus on results, not on activities or personalities.
Reward people for the results that they produce.
Manage by walking around. See what people are doing and listen to what they have to say. A
manager who sits in the office for their entire shift does not instill a sense of teamwork in their staff,
nor do they hear the daily issues they should address.
Make quality an obsession, especially on smaller items.
Send thank you notes and memos.
Provide workers with open, direct, and immediate feedback on their actual performance as
compared to expected performance and they tend to correct their own deficiencies.
Practice naive listening. Don 't talk, just let people explain why they are doing the types of things
that they are doing. You will learn many things. Conclusion People manage people; it is a part of
everyday life especially in the workplace. In the workplace, how you treat your employees will not
only reflect back on you but also helps to establish communication between yourself

Analysis Of We Wear The Mask In Richard Cory
Ever since 1600s when William Shakespeare described the whole world as "a stage" and "all the
men and women merely players", the idea of people wearing masks and hiding their true feelings
has been present in literature in one way or another. In the late 1800s, Paul Laurence Dunbar
publishes "We wear the mask", a poem that focuses on people hiding their true feelings from others
and everyone can relate. Unlike Dunbar who talks about different kinds of emotional masks people
use, Edwin Arlington Robinson uses his "Richard Cory" to draw attention to a mask of money and
success, which makes the average people ("we people") admire and idealize the successful person
(Richard Cory) only because we do not know and do not even try to see what is hidden behind the
mask. In just 4 stanzas and 16 lines, Edwin Arlington Robinson tells a meaningful and timeless story
about misfortune of Richard Cory, a person behind the mask of money and success who seemingly
has everything anyone could wish for. Robinson starts the first stanza with a description of Richard
Cory's appearance and a clear distinction between the two sides, Richard Cory and "we people". The
speaker mentions Richard Cory in the first line without any introduction, which means that everyone
should know who Richard Cory was, so the introduction is not needed. Furthermore, whenever
Richard would come to downtown, "we people of the pavement" admired him. The people of the
pavement or people from the streets of the downtown,

Personal Narrative : My Personal Experience
It all started on an unseasonably hot September day. However, extended Indian summers were
completely normal for Vacaville. A new person was going to meet me, which caused my social
anxiety to gradually escalate. Who was this dimwit to begin with? Mom made it clear that the
person I was meeting wasn't the school counselor, or anyone that was already employed at the
school. In fact, Mom assured me, she was from the school district. A school district employee?
Make sure to filter that you absolutely execrate her place of work, and how you have only recently
developed the habit of giving the district building the middle finger every single instance that you
have driven past. I was told her name was Carmen. Not the most common name, but I ... Show more

Next came lunch, which was always eventful to say the least. My friends would run around, and
always have junk food, which I was able to pry from them. Alas, the mere half hour that was allotted
for lunch passed, and onto sixth period. I checked in with my sixth period teacher, who didn't care
what anyone did, as long as it wasn't too loud or hindered her Diet Pepsi runs. I was dismissed to the
office, and to the testing room I went. I didn't want to enter the room, but it sure beat sitting in my
sixth period Study Skills sitting idly for two hours. Warily, I knocked on the door, followed by a
rather chipper female voice saying to come in. Maybe this wasn't going to be horrible, I considered.
She sounded nice enough, but what person in their right mind would judge a person by their voice?
On the table, I spotted a Starbucks Strawberry Frappe. This person was already on excellent terms
with me, but hopefully this was Carmen. I started. Nice going, genius. People can smell fear, so stop
being nervous. I remembered her name. Thankfully, I didn't screw it up. Breathe, dammit, breathe.
Don't pass out. What kind of first impression does that send, you knucklehead. Wait a minute; what
has she heard about me? Oh God. Who told her what? Quit panicking, pull yourself together.
Execute a decent handshake. What a grip this one has, crushing my hand. Don't mention that she is
eventually going to fracture your hand, she'll

Effects Of Taiwanese Resistance Of Japanese Oppression...
Douglas Wu Chinese 35 TA: Teng Xu Taiwanese Resistance of Japanese Oppression through
Literature The Taiwanese Literature Movement started in the 1930s while Taiwan was under
Japanese occupation and was a combined effort of authors, writers, poets, and publishers to establish
awareness and recognition of Taiwanese literature and culture. This happened because many
Taiwanese writers realized the oppressive colonial government had suppressed and censored a large
amount of original Taiwanese cultural identity and literature. The authors' use of literature in the
Taiwanese New Literature movement symbolized the Taiwanese common people's struggle under a
merciless and repressive government that had plagued people with poverty. Lu He–jo, Lai Ho, and
Yang K'uei's texts are similar because they all wrote under the Taiwanese New Literature
movement's ideals and their works revealed how the Japanese were incompatible with the Taiwanese
and to influence the people to reject the Japanese rule. One of the writers during the Japanese
colonial era was Lu He–jo, who wrote about the common man's struggle under the Japanese
government.. In the text "The Oxcart" by Lu He–jo, the story centers on a man named Yang T'ien–
ting, who is struggling to keep food on the table for his family because he is losing business to the
motor machines brought by the Japanese. In "The Oxcart," Old Lin states, "That's right. It's stupid to
work. Look at this Japanese era. All the work where you can make a lot of money, they've taken it
all away. Right? I say it's stupid for us to work" (Lu 33). Just like the writers of the Taiwanese New
Literature movement, the character in the story, Old Lin, agrees that the Japanese have taken too
much from the Taiwanese people and completely changed them, leaving behind poverty and cruelty.
In addition, the old man in "The Oxcart" talks about Japanese technology in his society: "It's not just
oxcarts. Everything from the old Ch'ing dynasty–none of it's any good in this Japanese era" (Lu 25).
The old man realizes that the Japanese machines are more advanced and better; yet, they are not
improving anyone's lives and are incompatible with the Taiwanese society. Yang and his family's
livelihood has been completely

I Have A Life Guided By Morality, Driven By Passion, And...
I am Jake Savino, but I have not always known that. I have not truly discovered my identity, who I
am as a person, or what I was put on this planet to do, until recent years. I live a life guided by
morality, driven by passion, and inspired by my loved ones.
My passion is to work in bioethics for a specialty hospital. I gained an emotional connection to the
healthcare field at a very young age, but did not quite know how to make this into my future. It is
still very much a learning process for me; one that I reflect on every minute of every day. I have
become drawn to the dichotomies of the world, specifically in healthcare. I tend to think about
things in a very analytical, philosophical, and empathetic manner. I often question how people ...

It was a shame to me that my mom's action of stepping forward to tell hospital staff about this
procedure was the deciding factor of my dad's survival. There had to be something more that the
nurses and physicians could have done. I was, and still am, in disbelief. I saw first hand what could
happen if one does not know what options of care are available. Those are the types of atrocities that
are happening today. Very few people are looking out for the common man and people die every
day, needlessly, as a result.
Another person, also very near and dear to my heart, has helped develop my values into my sought
future. I have been a mentor for a physically and mentally challenged individual named David
through an organization called Countryside Association for People with Disabilities. People like
David are turned down from healthcare all the time because our health system renders them as
functioning adults when, in fact, they are not capable of living on their own at all. If such wonderful
parents had not adopted David, the state would not provide care for him past age twenty–four, other
than providing income for disability. David cannot manage himself. The fact that there are people in
the world struggling with similar issues, and nobody to advocate for them worries me.
I believe that everyone deserves the right to the best care available without the basis of income,
employment, or social standing. I believe cutting edge approaches need to be offered to

Stereotypes In The Outsiders
Stereotype; a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person
or thing. In the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, and in the short story, "Geeks
Bearing Gifts", written by Ron Koertge, stereotypes are defied by ordinary people. In The Outsiders,
Johnny Cade and Darry Curtis face many struggles throughout their lives. Their town in separated
into two: the rich and dangerous Socs, and the quiet, tough Greasers. For them, living dangerously is
a reality. As a result of their lifestyle, Johnny has become fearful and Darry is considered the
toughest man in the gang. In "Geeks Bearing Gifts" aspiring journalist, Renee, interviews her fellow
classmates who are classified as "outcasts." After meeting several students, she realizes her
assumptions were incorrect about them. After reading both of these stories, the reader learns that our
thoughts about others often revolve around stereotypes and assumptions, but most of these ideas that
we have about other people are proven wrong.
In The Outsiders, Johnny and Darry find themselves struggling with the stereotype society has
labeled them with. While in the park, Johnny and his friend Ponyboy are jumped by five Socs.
Unexpectedly, Johnny stands up for himself and protects his friend. On page 56, the text states, "'I
killed him,' he said slowly. 'I killed that boy'. Bob the handsome Soc, was lying there in the
moonlight, doubled up and still." This demonstrates that although Johnny is considered a timid and
innocent person, he proves that how he acts in the gang is different from how he acts in the outside
world. This is unexpected because Johnny is always the one being cared for in the gang. However,
he protected his friend by killing someone. Johnny's actions prove that our assumptions about others
are wrong. This matters because society needs to realize that based on stereotypes, we incorrectly
judge others before getting to know them. Johnny is a clear example of what happens when one is
judged based on assumptions. Another example of this theme is reflected when Darry breaks down
at a hospital after finding out that his younger brother, Ponyboy, is going to be okay. On pages 98–
99, the text states, "'Darry,

Waknuk is the hometown of David, Petra and Rosalind; the three had to flee their home by night
when they got news of Sally and Katherine being captured. David and Petra left home and travelled
down a path to the riverbank, where they met up with Rosalind. For their travel they utilized two
great horses owned by Rosalind's father to go on their journey for safety. David, Petra and Rosalind
travelled in a southwesterly direction until they came to a stop in the early morning. The three
started their journey again in the late of the evening through the night in the same direction till they
came to a stop in Labrador, where Petra was sending letter shapes to the Sealand woman of their
current location. They continued on their journey until the break of dawn and then rested. Just after
sunrise Michael informed them that he and the search party were on their trail and they needed to
get going. David, Petra and Rosalind hustled their things together and made their way, continuing in
a southwesterly direction into Wild Country. They made another stop in Wild Country to eat. When
it was a little darker they pushed on towards the Fringes, until they were captured by the Fringes
people and taken even further into the Fringes. Eventually, the Sealand woman rescued David, Petra
and Rosalind and they travelled to Zealand via a flying craft that she had came in during the
evening.

Indigenous Rights and Land Claims Around the World Essay
With globalization and colonization taking over almost the entire known world, native tribes who
are indigenous to their lands are losing control of the lands that their people have lived in for ages to
the hands of foreign colonizers who claim the land as their own. Now, indigenous people all around
the world are struggling to reclaim the lands and rights that were taken away from them through
non–violent social relations with national governments and large corporations. Anthropologists have
recorded how indigenous people across the globe attempt to create relations with national
governments to reclaim rights and lands that they once had before the colonization of their ancestral
homeland. Compiled in this essay are three examples of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their struggle is soon brought to court where they requested to be considered citizens of the Nisga'a
nation, rather than being considered citizens of Canada. Eventually, a treaty is signed between them
and the federal government so the Nisga'a people can claim sovereignty over their ancestral
homeland, while still being confined within the nation–state. This article helps answer the question
of this essay by showing the effects of globalization through colonization on aboriginal people's
identities. Since their land had been under colonization, the Nisga'a found it absolutely necessary to
fight for their national identity to claim autonomy from the colonizers. By having the right to call

I Am A Good Problem Solver And I Have An Analytical Brain
About 3 weeks ago
Many people have different reasons to apply for staff. Mine will sound a little cheesy but its true. I
purely enjoy helping people. It gives me a sense of gratitude when I show someone how to do things
the right way or help someone with their issues. I am a good problem solver and I have an analytical
brain. These traits make my job easy and fun. I know that staff isn't meant to be a fun job, but
keeping a cheerful attitude on job and being friendly to players makes more people want to come
back to the server. I have two modes when being staff; one cheery light mood when I joke around
and talk with players and a serious mood when dealing with issues. I NEVER allow these two to
mix together because that could jeopardize my position and probably annoy some players. Lastly, I
know that certain people apply for the rank because they think it will bring them respect and make
them cool. I have never considered this as a reason to apply and I frankly hate these types of people.
They often end up abusing their power and getting banned. I have never abused and will never
abuse. I am applying because I believe that I have what it takes to help the server.
Why should we choose you to become staff instead of someone else?
To begin with, I feel I should take part in the staffing community here because I ensure a large
portion of qualified time as well as extreme experiences and a sincere inclination in moderating over

Never assume that if a person belongs to a certain group, they all hold the same preferences and

their preferences are. If personal preferences are not respected, then this could not only offend the
person, but also they may avoid seeking support when they need it. Sensitivity should be exercised

1.5 Describe how to identify suitable opportunities for an individual to learn or practice skills for

People can learn practical living skills on a day–to–day basis. It is important therefore that care

I think that both articles use emotive language very well, and that they are equally good at getting
there point across through using language.
Both of the articles feature one long, main interview and one shorter interview towards the end of
the article. The interviews have been included in each case to give the reader an account of the
events in the article from one of the people involved. This is a good idea as people who were
actually involved in the events of the article will be able to give more information on what actually
happened, and will probably know things that no–one else does. Having interviews also makes the
reader sympathise with the people involved, especially if it is coming from one of the people
mentioned in the main first paragraph of the article. The people who put together the articles must
make sure that everything they include in the interviews is relevant and that they are not too long. I
think that the article that uses interviews and quotes better is probably Inches from tragedy, because
all the information given is relevant to and informative about what happened. I also think this
because the interviews featured are not too long and leave room in the article for other information.
Having a picture in an article is a good idea, because it lets the reader see exactly who was involved
and let them see what effect the events of the article have had on them

Reality Is A Perception That Organizes How People Relate...
Reality is a perception that organizes how people relate and organize the world. The Paracingulate
sulcus is a structure in the brain that is associated with our monitoring of what is reality and what is
not. With out this monitoring system people end up with disorders such as schizophrenia. The New
York Times interprets the results of a study published by the University of Cambridge and
University of Melbourne on the effects of the Paracingulate sulcus on how people monitor what is
reality. The Study, "A Specific Brain Structural Basis for Individual Differences in Reality
Monitoring," examines a variety of research on the matter and presents the hypothesis that the
people with out a Paracingulate sulcus will have poorer monitoring of memory compared to people
with a clear Paracingulate sulcus on either one or both sides of the brain. Even though both articles
explain the exact same research, it is interesting to see the many differences of the two articles. The
article was chosen for more then its connection to cognition and what is being studied in class. The
article interested both participants in more ways than one. The idea of reality being a perception that
changes from person to person is not something people think about explicitly. It is merely by
reading the article that one can take interest in the fact that each person perceives the world a
different way. Even more so, this perception can be altered by having, or not having, a specific

Reflection About Identity
Identity is very difficult to fully comprehend, but it is vital to the purpose of every man, woman, and
child that has lived and ever will live on the earth. As precisely expressed by Erik Erikson, "In the
social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity." As
defined by Merriam–Webster, identity is "The distinguishing character or personality of an
individual." However, this definition falls short of the true meaning of the word, as it does not
openly state the deciding factor for the perception of a person's identity. For this reason, it is
necessary to redefine the word in order to properly convey its meaning to those that do not fully
understand it, as well as clarify by whom it is ascertained. Identity is how one perceives oneself,
based primarily on the behaviors exhibited by this person.
A more precise definition of identity could not have been taught to me any better than by my first
venture from the state of Iowa to the valley town of Estes Park, Colorado. For a reason I still do not
understand in its entirety, it brought me to better understand myself by truly comprehending in what
esteem I hold myself, and perhaps what I one day strive to achieve. The novelty and charm of the
place were greatest the first time I experienced it, and I felt an indescribable sense of peace that
unfortunately did not entirely carry forward in future years. After driving through what seemed like

Conflicts Between The Police And The People
Throughout American history we've had many instances where conflicts between the police and the
people have occurred and it was difficult to find what exactly happened. They become 'he said she
said' type of situations even when there may be a lot of evidence and eyewitness accounts because
people want to see it for themselves. With having police body camera's it can be helped to eliminate
these issues and finally work on helping with core issues there are today. Not all police officers are
bad and not all people are good. However, we're in 2014 and we shouldn't have some of the
problems we have. In 2008 it was recorded that males were more likely to receive threats or use of
force and in 74% of these situations were viewed as excessive and included pushing or grabbing. It
was reported that 19% of these conflicts included the person being injured. In statistics from 2011–
2012 it's been proven that in many shore communities that 44% of the arrests were black while they
had made up only 15% of the population. As of 2012 in our own town we had a rate of 384.6 per
1000 residents were arrested if they were blacks v.s. a whopping 90.1 per 1000 residents if you were
not black. The point is, race, racial profiling, and brutality also have a great deal to influence why
this bill should be passed. In a 12 month trial in Rialto (CA) they held an experimental study in
which they had a had some of their officers wear a body camera while on duty and other officers

Personal Vision Statement : My Vision
Introduction
In this paper, I will outline my personal vision statement. This vision and mission will help
determine the steps I need to take now in order to become the type of leader that others will follow.
Next, I discuss those internal and external obstacles which may prevent me from achieving my
goals. Lastly, I will identify the steps I will take to overcome or mitigate those obstacles. In
conclusion, by outlining my desired personal vision statement I hope to have a picture or image
upon which I can reflect regularly. By so doing, it is my sincere desire and hope of it actually
happening.
My Vision A personal vision statement is a written description of the lifestyle you want to be
enjoying at a given point in the future (Pearson, Thomas, 2003). I actually have two competing
visions. If I were somehow to inherit a large sum of money, I would love to open a state of the art
facility where kids could come after school and may do their homework. Once they completed their
homework they would have a place to decompress after a long day at school. The facility would
have a video arcade, basketball, tennis, and racquet ball court. There would also be an Olympic style
swimming pool. In addition, I would have a computer room as well as a state of the art library. I
would hire tech geeks to teach, train, and equip our kids on computer technology and maybe even
hire someone to teach a foreign language. I would have a music room for those who wish to learn

do horrible things. Harper Lee shows these assumptions throughout the whole book and depicts the
twisted racism that corrupts societies. In Into Thin Air when the sherpa Ngawang gets sick the other
sherpas deny that he has HAPE, which he clearly does, because he is Nepalis and supposedly
immune to such diseases. Krakauer states, "the sidar was adamant that Ngawang didn't have HAPE
or any other form of altitude illness, "but rather was suffering from 'gastric,' the Nepali term for
stomach ache"" (Krakauer 115). If Ngawang was not Nepalis or a sherpa than the other sherpas
would not have assumed that it was impossible for him to get altitude sickness. But it was presumed

Don't Fear Change Essay examples
What are you afraid of? Many people are afraid of many things such as death, heights, bugs, or
public speaking; but the fear of change ranks high in the list of things that trigger anxiety (Radwan).
Is there a reasonable answer why people neglect change nowadays? In fact, there is more than one
answer to this question. Change has become such an important aspect of our everyday life that it is
impossible to ignore. When it comes to the idea of change, most people will readily agree that some
individuals try their hardest to avoid change. The reason behind this known theory is that those
individuals don't fear change; they fear being changed (Rabadam). In the end, change is something
that drives them away from wanting to experience other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the main reason to fear failure is how we imagine how others will view us when we fail. For
example, if an individual keeps doing the same thing over and over, then the results will never
change. As Albert Einstein stated, "a person, who never made a mistake, never tried anything new"
(Brenner). Failure is not the enemy, but a life–changing experience. It is a human experience, and it
prepares the way for us to grow and transform our lives. Mistakes are essential to the development
of life, just as change is. Nevertheless, change is said to prepare us for life and without change, life
would persistently be the same. Admittedly, childhood experiences affect your adulthood. For
instance, overprotective parents and parents who spoil their children are those who indirectly teach
them to be afraid to change. In the same way, over protection can cause the children to be unready
for the real world. When the kids do get out into the real world, they don't know how to handle it.
The individual will be so used to what they knew when growing up that that is all they will expect.
That same individual will not follow the pattern of change. A person that doesn't follow the pattern
of change will most likely fear change itself. Furthermore, another reason people fear change is
because they fear the past might replicate itself (Radwan). This reason links to the fear of failure in a
way. As an illustration, a woman who

Shopper Essay
In the United States alone, millions of people shop every day. Interestingly enough, despite the mass
amount people, every shopper is classified as a consumer from one of only three main categories.
One can assume a shoppers category by examining the shopper's cart since the products which they
have bought determines their category. Every shopper is categorized as either a proactive shopper,
an aggressive shopper, or a wasteful shopper.
The shopper that only buys the items on his list is the person who makes shopping quick, easy, and
affordable. Those who are proactive and live busy lives most likely fall into this category of
shoppers. My father and I are both great examples of the proactive shopper. Prior to my Bar–

Upon entering the store I went directly to the men's shoes while my grandmother explored the
remainder of the store. After picking shoes I noticed my grandmother heading towards the cashier
with a cart filled to the brim with unwanted shoes and clothing. Even though we only went shopping
for a single pair of shoes we left with a cart full of junk. In contrast to the other shoppers, the last
type of shopper never even purchases his desired item, instead, he wastes his time and money on
things he does not need. The final sect of shoppers is arguably the most foolish approach to
shopping. This shopper is the person who buys everything except for the product he intended to buy.
One can entitle this shopper as the wasteful shopper because of all the time and money wasted on
the needless items they purchase. Unfortunately, my aunt often shops as a wasteful shopper. Many
years ago I went shopping for towels with my aunt. We went to Walmart but, their towels were all
overpriced. We decided it was not worth the money; however, according to her, this was not a valid
reason to leave the store. After an hour of shopping for needless products we finally left Walmart
with a cart full of stuff she did not need nor will she ever need. Spoiled teenagers and young adults
also often shop this way. In fact, there are people that go

Analysis Of ' High School Based Television Shows Violence...
In high school based television shows there are constant themes of insecurity and the division of
popular kids and the outcasts. Unfortunately, that is how the world works, people are labeled and
associated with certain groups. These labels force people into thinking that they have to look a
certain way or follow popular trends. Just like Susannah Calahan in Brain on Fire, she suffers from
an illness and during her recovery she criticizes herself based off of what society expects her to look
like. Social norms are deeply entrenched in everyone's life to the point where Susannah tries to hide
her sickness and put on a strong face just to avoid being labeled as abnormal. There is a sense of her
fear of being ridiculed and alienated from her loved ones since she does not fulfill the common
image society has on women. Susannah is embarrassed by her actions, her appearance and she
refuses to accept that her new–self is even a part of her identity. Susannah does not view her post
illness appearance as acceptable despite having no control over the outcome. Identity is in fact a
matter of social construction since Susannah's self esteem and perception of herself deteriorates as
she finds herself deviating from what is considered normal. One important aspect of Susannah's
illness is that it causes her to dramatically shift from a sociable person to someone who cannot hold
a conversation. Throughout the duration of her sickness and her road to recovery, often times she

Question: Where Do Our Attitudes About Good And Bad Language
Question: Where do our attitudes about good and bad language come from and how do they
correlate with language discrimination?
Ever since the beginning of time, communication has never been considered foreign to any living
creature. As a child, you automatically pick up from your surroundings even if you are unaware of it
at that very moment in time, same type of concept with language. When you hear your family
members, your peers, and other types of "influential" individuals communicate, your brain acts as a
sponge in a sense and absorbs what information you hear from them. Now, not all things that other
people say are positive especially when it comes to language. For instance, you are taught from a
very young age that they way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What this means is that people make judgements off the way others communicate, which is
something you already may have known because you might do the same exact thing on a daily basis.
Language is something that is sacred in a sense because it is something that makes you the person
you are today or is just the reason why people look at you the way they do, it is what makes you
special. As I had stated previously, the attitudes about good and bad language come from
"influential" individuals. Now, the reason I use the word influential is because it is almost
impossible to pinpoint what people everyone sees or hears from and try to emulate what those
influential people preach into their daily lives. Influential people may be parents, friends, celebrities,
journalists, or government officials, basically those people who you feel have the biggest input/
impact on the way you think about things. One of the most powerful figures that we try to emulate
from are celebrities, without a doubt. When you see a celebrity, someone who has a lot of money,
you will automatically assume that whatever they say, it must mean something. In a sense, we
idolize celebrities because they are powerful, they can go anywhere their hearts desire just because
they want to. We all wish to be like some

My Position On A Statewide Bathroom Policy
In the endeavor to fully describe my position on this particular issue, it is my wish to begin with a
short introduction to the history of myself. I am a straight, married man with many friends from all
walks of life. These friends happen to include everyone from transgendered persons to straight
persons, atheists to polytheists, and everyone in between. I consider myself open–minded, but do not
mistake me for liberal–minded, as this term does not represent me.
The line between hate and dislike is a rather thin one to say the least. The policy change debate–of
which, if I may say, no one was invited to–of the private corporation that is the Target store
franchise, is one that should not, and cannot be remarked upon by anyone in public office. There
was an article last week regarding the possibility of Texas adopting a statewide bathroom policy that
would require people to use the latrine that corresponds to their gender at birth.
Perhaps, you, as I did, see the paradox created by the right. To be sticking their nose in business (a
literal, private, business) where it does not belong by enforcing a state–governed rule on bathroom
policy is ludicrous. Are these not the same people who complain about government making rules for
private corporations?
My statement earlier regarding the line between hate and dislike is growing ever more relevant. You
see, one can dislike a policy, but due to the politically ethical obligation that comes with holding
public office, that person

Death Is The Worst Thing
There is one thing in this world that no one can escape, that everyone fears, and makes people who
are close to that person miserable, and that is death. Death is the worst thing that can ever happen to
a person, and is just as bad for the people who are close to them. There is an emptiness that comes
with the death of a loved one or someone close. That blankness in the world does something to the
people who encompass that person who passed. It changes people, whether it is for better or worse.
Death is a part of life and depending on how people are affected can dictate whether it will leave a
positive or negative change to their life and that conversion happened to me with the death of my
mother, Fran. I can recall the day it happened, like it was yesterday, the air had a certain emptiness
to it. It felt cold, barren, but it just felt like any normal rough day, where everything would not go
your way. I arrived home from hockey practice like I do every Thursday with my father and was
ready to lay down before I did my homework. Then we got the call and we bolted to the emergency
room at Mercy Hospital. The nurse took us into a waiting room and we heard the heartbreaking
news from the physician and the room went still. It was not a typical quiet but so quiet that you

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Success is defined as the favorable termination of attempts or endeavors and the accomplishment of
one's goals. When I hear the word success, I think of my friend and my teacher, Mrs. Regina Kynes.
I consider her successful because she has a strong family, a favorable career, and she is the most

She strives to divide her time between her family and her job, which helps her achieve balance in
her life. Sometimes, however, there are difficult people and challenging situations that come up in
life that can bring her down.
Kynes deals with challenging people and situations by taking the "high road." She does what is
right, both morally and ethically, and when people start to frustrate her, she still acts respectfully
towards them. As she is being kind, to those frustrating people, she thinks, "[I hope] that my actions
and reactions will influence them to make better choices," which goes back to advice her mother has
given her.
Kynes admits that the best advice she has ever received is from her mother: "Always take the high
road," and "Kill them with kindness, no matter who they are or what they have done." Kynes
continues to follow this advice to this day. Kynes added that what she takes away from her mother's

gained wisdom from her mother, and she has continued to pass wisdom to others. Kynes's advice to

Values Of American Values
"We the people of the United States," value nothing of importance and take a great deal of what they
have for granted. There are many things that Americans value and a few really are positive values,
but definitely not all American values are important. All of these values have something in common
though and that is they all are based off of how other people see each other. These values are money,
possessions, physical features, religion, and how Americans idolize celebrities and view social
status.
Something that almost all Americans value the most is money. Money, everyone needs it and
everyone wants more of it, no matter how much they already have. Americans do tend to be greedy
and want all the money they can receive because without money you can't obtain something in this
country. This is negative because it shows that Americans always want more. But there is a little bit
of positive in this because it encourages people to get out and work so they can make more money.
Money is something that all Americans want, and it is negative or something like that

Descriptive Essay About A House
Arkansas, Only about a hour, maybe two hours long drive away from home. Over the course of the
day we meet new and different people, eat good food, and give gifts. Everyone is overly affectionate
and helps out in the kitchen. Squeezing around twenty people in the tiny house is a tight smoosh,
even if our family is almost half of that group. The house itself may not be that tiny but we're all
gathered in just the kitchen and living room, making it seem like a smaller space. At times, a few
people stroll out the glass door, onto the patio and into the back yard, yet even then it feels just a tad
crowded, especially since we were around people we'd never met. From long road trips to the ice
cream punch to eating way too many rice krispie treats in one sitting, every part of that day went
smoothly, giving off a joyful, pleasant vibe. Joyful is a great feeling to have around Christmas time.
The best part? It was all captured in one sweet picture.
Starting with my father, smiling into the camera with his fork mid–bite, his long sleeve shirt is beige
like the walls of a new house. A Hoyt hat sits on his bald head, the camera giving his face a shiny
glowing appearance. Next to him sits Mari, his girlfriend. She's the best friend of Maleeah, the host

Importance of Ambitions in Life Essay
Importance of Ambitions in Life Ambition is defined as a strong desire to obtain success, power, or

everything to many people. The only purpose in a man's life is fulfilling his dream, because am
ambition can be associated with a dream. And if this dream doesn't exist you can't say that you have
lived your life to the full. In the moments of solitary meditation when we are alone with ourselves

The creative act is born from an irresistible impulse towards the absolute, that is the wish of the
individual to lift his subjectivity to the maximum perfection allowed by his spiritual resources and
then to transpose this degree of spiritual elevation into a concrete world. On the other hand, the
creative act is born from the hope that people will recognize the value of his work and therefore
remember his name forever. You should consider the first aspiration of the individual. We can assert
that that it is dissolved in a paradox. Of course, the process of creation augments substantially the
spiritual energies of the individual, it even makes him think that he represents the supreme measure
of the generating principle of life, but the work, the product of this process does not succeed in
conveying all the superior exigencies of the creator and, consequently, it does not completely
confirm his exceptional self–appreciation during the creation of his work. But in my opinion when
you have an ambition it means that you are living for fulfilling it, you live your life to the full, you
are completely dedicated and focused on what you want to achieve or fulfil. When you have a
certain ambition, even if it is a very strange one and you hope every day that one day you will fulfil

Personal Identity Nell Bernstein is the author of "Goin' Gangsta, Choosin' Cholita: Claiming

preferred identity rather than accepting their own. For example, in Bernstein's essay a girl named
April, living in California, wants to be Mexican; therefore, she dresses like and attempts to talk in

the state of California, where all this identity changing is happening due to the great diversity of race

The idea of people trying to change their identity just strikes me with stupidity. It is God's decision
as to what color, nationality or such a person will be, and I believe He has a purpose for everything;
therefore, each person should respect His decision with acceptance and serve Him well under the
identity chosen for them. The biggest mistake of this essay is the misuse of the word "identity."
Bernstein claims that, "Identity is not a matter of where you come from, what you were born into,
what color your skin is," but rather, "It's what you wear, the music you listen to, the words you
use..." (45). This is all wrong! Identity is exactly what she thinks it is not. The color of one's skin
describes their race. That is one piece of their identity. Where they come from is their nationality.
That is another piece. What they were born into, such as family, beliefs, religion etc...., is their
culture, Furney 2 which is yet another piece. All these pieces together describes who a person is.
Clothes, music, and accent only describe who a person appears to be. April, who is in fact Anglo and
should be proud of it, dresses like a Mexican because she thinks this will make her Mexican, but it
will not. Frankly, if I were Mexican and April came to me in her imitation Mexican costume trying
to speak Spanish to me even though the only thing she probably knows in Spanish is, "Yo Queiro

House Of The Scorpion Character Analysis
In the story House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt Alacran.
The main setting is in the future in the opium fields and Atlzan. In the beginning of the story, we
meet Matt in Celia's house. The main conflict in the book is Matt being a clone, the whole entire
book Matt worries about being a clone and that people will know and what they will do. The
solution to the conflict is that all the Alacran died and he is now a real person since El Patron died.
In the story Tam Lin was a huge impact in Matt's life. Tam Lin was a kind hearted person to because
he was the only grownup male in the whole book that treated Matt like a regular human. Also he
cared and protected him unlike anyone else in the book. Tam Lin also was a father figure to Matt
because Matt is a clone and has no mom or dad, but Celia brought him up, so he thinks of her as his
mom, and Tam Lin was with Matt for around ten years and he defended him from the Alacran and
protected him from El Patron, he even saved him when Matt was supposed to die and helped him
get to Atlzan. Although Tam Lin was a nice and kind person, he was a murder, terrorist, and a
horrible person when he worked for El Patron. I know this because farm patrol talked about him
about how he killed 20 little kids while trying to kill the prime minister of Scotland, also Tam Lin

Taking a Look at Audience Analysis
Audience analysis is one of the most important elements of effective communication which involves
assembling and interpreting information about the recipients of oral, written, or visual
communication. In order to derive an effective speech or writing, it is imperative to determine the
associated characteristics of an audience. Audience analysis can help you gain valuable insight about
your readers, which can help you to choose and develop a relevant, meaningful topic. It can also
help you to create a writing plan that is tailored effectively to your reading audience, with
appropriate tone, style, language and content.
Generally, audience analysis is the collection and interpretation of audience characteristics through
observation, inferences, questionnaires, or interviews. There are three main ways to adapt to
audience before starting the communication process (Steven A. and Susan J. Beebe, 1997):
Demographic analysis
Disposition analysis
Knowledge analysis
Demographic analysis: It involves age, gender, culture, ethnicity, race, religion and educational level
of the audience. More likely, it gives an idea about:
Is my audience homogenous or heterogeneous? How are the readers alike or different from one
another? Despite the differences, what do readers have in common?
What range of ages is represented?
What are my readers' political and religious affiliations?

The American Dream Essay
American Dream Many persons will give everything to come and reside in the United States. There

as above. But what does this mean? These two words have had such conviction over immigrants
since our nation's founding; enough conviction for whole families to pack their bags and leave the
only life they have ever known behind, for the promise of something bigger, something better.
This dream is usually sought after by people who have been deprived of things such as the freedom
to do what they want or the ability to have what they want. I believe that the American dream can
still be achieved by people to this very day, even though I think it is a lot harder to accomplish the
dreams they have now.The sky is the limit to what you can build, and what can happen to you and
your family." –Sanford I. Weill. I think that The Younger Family made the right decision by not
taking Linder's money. I believe this

Identity And Perception

  • 1. Identity And Perception Living in a digital world where information is at the tip of our fingers, we are able to fulfill our curiosity for any culture through a search on the internet. We often question the strange behaviors of those who are unfamiliar to us, yet we rarely question our own perception and treat our culture as a sure thing. To understand how my Taiwanese heritage influences my identity and perception, I interviewed my parents, Tien–Hua (55) and Charlotte(52), and my grandmother, Wen–Li (80), via phone calls and video calls. The atmosphere of the interviews, as expected, were mainly causal with my parents and formal with my grandmother. While there were several indicators that suggest the shaping of my identity and perception, nationality and filial piety were the most influential ones. Possessing a strong sense of nationality has always been utmost important in my family due to the complicated relationship between China and Taiwan. As I was brought up by two proud Taiwanese parents and had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When connecting cultural heritage to the shaping of individual's perception and identity, clues of how we might approach intercultural relationships are revealed. Whether we are more opened or closed in forming relationships with people from different culture, we should not be quick to assert our incapability of creating close intercultural bonds because after all, our perception and identity is learned, and we can certainly unlearned it if we "get comfortable with the uncomfortable". Despite the fact that it is impossible to learn all the rules, beliefs, and values of every culture around world, we can certainly become culturally sensitive if we let go of fear, judgements, ethnocentrism, or anything that impedes the development of intercultural relationship. As we carry this beneficial tool with us, we can soon find ourselves making friends everywhere we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Why I Want For The People Who Will Influence My Identity... Ever since I was little, my mom has repeated little sayings to my brothers and I. One of her favorites was, "You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose." While this research project is not headed in the direction of nose picking, as I have gotten older, this quote has caused me to reflect on the choices I have made in terms of who I am. If I do indeed hold the power to choose the people who will influence my identity the strongest, why did I not choose those who have allowed me to be authentic until now? What is authenticity? "Being authentic means something like living in accordance with one's own unique values and ideals," but it is greater than simply being oneself, it is "resisting the imposition of the values and ideals of others" (Pierce 441) as well. Therefore, authenticity is also neglecting to succumb to the beliefs of others to stay true to one's own beliefs. However, this does not mean that authenticity is static, "an individual should engage in a process of constructing his personhood.... His task in life becomes searching for his true personhood" (381). Personhood should be a journey of finding oneself, figuring out who one is and what one believes in. The act of evolving is part of the discovery, but when "their acts are guided by other people's ideas of who they should be" (379) it leads to inauthenticity because the change is made solely to fit in. All in all, authenticity is based heavily on truth, because "[it] ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Individual Development Plans Individual Development Plans PSY 301 Terray Kashuba September 8, 2006 Personal Development Skills From infancy to adulthood, a person's emotional development skills differ on many levels; for example: a person may have the ability to manage a whole department but lack a few skills necessary to manage the people who work in that department. I feel as though I can relate to this issue due to the fact that even though my employees get their jobs done, I sometimes sense that they do not consider me their manager because I was once their co–worker. Managing people The way managers and supervisors treat their employees determine the rate of retention and turnover. They interact daily with people who have individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Expect others to succeed. It becomes a self–fulfilling prophecy when you believe others are loyal, dedicated and doing a good job. Help others see how they will benefit from doing a job. This is when they truly become motivated. Do not avoid talking to a poor performer. It hurts them, the organization and yourself if the situation is not dealt with. Do not over control others. It is frustrating for them and time consuming for you. Focus on results, not on activities or personalities. Reward people for the results that they produce. Manage by walking around. See what people are doing and listen to what they have to say. A manager who sits in the office for their entire shift does not instill a sense of teamwork in their staff, nor do they hear the daily issues they should address. Make quality an obsession, especially on smaller items. Send thank you notes and memos. Provide workers with open, direct, and immediate feedback on their actual performance as compared to expected performance and they tend to correct their own deficiencies. Practice naive listening. Don 't talk, just let people explain why they are doing the types of things that they are doing. You will learn many things. Conclusion People manage people; it is a part of everyday life especially in the workplace. In the workplace, how you treat your employees will not only reflect back on you but also helps to establish communication between yourself

  • 8. Analysis Of We Wear The Mask In Richard Cory Ever since 1600s when William Shakespeare described the whole world as "a stage" and "all the men and women merely players", the idea of people wearing masks and hiding their true feelings has been present in literature in one way or another. In the late 1800s, Paul Laurence Dunbar publishes "We wear the mask", a poem that focuses on people hiding their true feelings from others and everyone can relate. Unlike Dunbar who talks about different kinds of emotional masks people use, Edwin Arlington Robinson uses his "Richard Cory" to draw attention to a mask of money and success, which makes the average people ("we people") admire and idealize the successful person (Richard Cory) only because we do not know and do not even try to see what is hidden behind the mask. In just 4 stanzas and 16 lines, Edwin Arlington Robinson tells a meaningful and timeless story about misfortune of Richard Cory, a person behind the mask of money and success who seemingly has everything anyone could wish for. Robinson starts the first stanza with a description of Richard Cory's appearance and a clear distinction between the two sides, Richard Cory and "we people". The speaker mentions Richard Cory in the first line without any introduction, which means that everyone should know who Richard Cory was, so the introduction is not needed. Furthermore, whenever Richard would come to downtown, "we people of the pavement" admired him. The people of the pavement or people from the streets of the downtown, ... • 12. Effects Of Taiwanese Resistance Of Japanese Oppression... Douglas Wu Chinese 35 TA: Teng Xu Taiwanese Resistance of Japanese Oppression through Literature The Taiwanese Literature Movement started in the 1930s while Taiwan was under Japanese occupation and was a combined effort of authors, writers, poets, and publishers to establish awareness and recognition of Taiwanese literature and culture. This happened because many Taiwanese writers realized the oppressive colonial government had suppressed and censored a large amount of original Taiwanese cultural identity and literature. The authors' use of literature in the Taiwanese New Literature movement symbolized the Taiwanese common people's struggle under a merciless and repressive government that had plagued people with poverty. Lu He–jo, Lai Ho, and Yang K'uei's texts are similar because they all wrote under the Taiwanese New Literature movement's ideals and their works revealed how the Japanese were incompatible with the Taiwanese and to influence the people to reject the Japanese rule. One of the writers during the Japanese colonial era was Lu He–jo, who wrote about the common man's struggle under the Japanese government.. In the text "The Oxcart" by Lu He–jo, the story centers on a man named Yang T'ien– ting, who is struggling to keep food on the table for his family because he is losing business to the motor machines brought by the Japanese. In "The Oxcart," Old Lin states, "That's right. It's stupid to work. Look at this Japanese era. All the work where you can make a lot of money, they've taken it all away. Right? I say it's stupid for us to work" (Lu 33). Just like the writers of the Taiwanese New Literature movement, the character in the story, Old Lin, agrees that the Japanese have taken too much from the Taiwanese people and completely changed them, leaving behind poverty and cruelty. In addition, the old man in "The Oxcart" talks about Japanese technology in his society: "It's not just oxcarts. Everything from the old Ch'ing dynasty–none of it's any good in this Japanese era" (Lu 25). The old man realizes that the Japanese machines are more advanced and better; yet, they are not improving anyone's lives and are incompatible with the Taiwanese society. I saw first hand what could happen if one does not know what options of care are available. Those are the types of atrocities that are happening today. Very few people are looking out for the common man and people die every day, needlessly, as a result. Another person, also very near and dear to my heart, has helped develop my values into my sought future. I have been a mentor for a physically and mentally challenged individual named David through an organization called Countryside Association for People with Disabilities. People like David are turned down from healthcare all the time because our health system renders them as functioning adults when, in fact, they are not capable of living on their own at all. If such wonderful parents had not adopted David, the state would not provide care for him past age twenty–four, other than providing income for disability. David cannot manage himself. The fact that there are people in the world struggling with similar issues, and nobody to advocate for them worries me. I believe that everyone deserves the right to the best care available without the basis of income, employment, or social standing. I believe cutting edge approaches need to be offered to ... • 18. Stereotypes In The Outsiders Stereotype; a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. In the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, and in the short story, "Geeks Bearing Gifts", written by Ron Koertge, stereotypes are defied by ordinary people. In The Outsiders, Johnny Cade and Darry Curtis face many struggles throughout their lives. Their town in separated into two: the rich and dangerous Socs, and the quiet, tough Greasers. For them, living dangerously is a reality. As a result of their lifestyle, Johnny has become fearful and Darry is considered the toughest man in the gang. In "Geeks Bearing Gifts" aspiring journalist, Renee, interviews her fellow classmates who are classified as "outcasts." After meeting several students, she realizes her assumptions were incorrect about them. After reading both of these stories, the reader learns that our thoughts about others often revolve around stereotypes and assumptions, but most of these ideas that we have about other people are proven wrong. In The Outsiders, Johnny and Darry find themselves struggling with the stereotype society has labeled them with. While in the park, Johnny and his friend Ponyboy are jumped by five Socs. Unexpectedly, Johnny stands up for himself and protects his friend. On page 56, the text states, "'I killed him,' he said slowly. 'I killed that boy'. Bob the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still." This demonstrates that although Johnny is considered a timid and innocent person, he proves that how he acts in the gang is different from how he acts in the outside world. This is unexpected because Johnny is always the one being cared for in the gang. However, he protected his friend by killing someone. Johnny's actions prove that our assumptions about others are wrong. This matters because society needs to realize that based on stereotypes, we incorrectly judge others before getting to know them. Johnny is a clear example of what happens when one is judged based on assumptions. Another example of this theme is reflected when Darry breaks down at a hospital after finding out that his younger brother, Ponyboy, is going to be okay. On pages 98– 99, the text states, "'Darry, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scott Fitzgerald Waknuk is the hometown of David, Petra and Rosalind; the three had to flee their home by night when they got news of Sally and Katherine being captured. David and Petra left home and travelled down a path to the riverbank, where they met up with Rosalind. For their travel they utilized two great horses owned by Rosalind's father to go on their journey for safety. David, Petra and Rosalind travelled in a southwesterly direction until they came to a stop in the early morning. The three started their journey again in the late of the evening through the night in the same direction till they came to a stop in Labrador, where Petra was sending letter shapes to the Sealand woman of their current location. They continued on their journey until the break of dawn and then rested. Just after sunrise Michael informed them that he and the search party were on their trail and they needed to get going. David, Petra and Rosalind hustled their things together and made their way, continuing in a southwesterly direction into Wild Country. They made another stop in Wild Country to eat. When it was a little darker they pushed on towards the Fringes, until they were captured by the Fringes people and taken even further into the Fringes. Eventually, the Sealand woman rescued David, Petra and Rosalind and they travelled to Zealand via a flying craft that she had came in during the evening. Indigenous Rights and Land Claims Around the World Essay With globalization and colonization taking over almost the entire known world, native tribes who are indigenous to their lands are losing control of the lands that their people have lived in for ages to the hands of foreign colonizers who claim the land as their own. Now, indigenous people all around the world are struggling to reclaim the lands and rights that were taken away from them through non–violent social relations with national governments and large corporations. Anthropologists have recorded how indigenous people across the globe attempt to create relations with national governments to reclaim rights and lands that they once had before the colonization of their ancestral homeland. Eventually, a treaty is signed between them and the federal government so the Nisga'a people can claim sovereignty over their ancestral homeland, while still being confined within the nation–state. This article helps answer the question of this essay by showing the effects of globalization through colonization on aboriginal people's identities. Since their land had been under colonization, the Nisga'a found it absolutely necessary to fight for their national identity to claim autonomy from the colonizers. By having the right to call themselves Nisga'a citizens instead of Canadian citizens, their national identities have immensely strengthened due to oppression (Blackburn 2009). Soren C. • 24. I Am A Good Problem Solver And I Have An Analytical Brain About 3 weeks ago Many people have different reasons to apply for staff. Mine will sound a little cheesy but its true. I purely enjoy helping people. It gives me a sense of gratitude when I show someone how to do things the right way or help someone with their issues. I am a good problem solver and I have an analytical brain. These traits make my job easy and fun. I know that staff isn't meant to be a fun job, but keeping a cheerful attitude on job and being friendly to players makes more people want to come back to the server. I have two modes when being staff; one cheery light mood when I joke around and talk with players and a serious mood when dealing with issues. I NEVER allow these two to mix together because that could jeopardize my position and probably annoy some players. Lastly, I know that certain people apply for the rank because they think it will bring them respect and make them cool. I have never considered this as a reason to apply and I frankly hate these types of people. They often end up abusing their power and getting banned. I have never abused and will never abuse. I am applying because I believe that I have what it takes to help the server. Why should we choose you to become staff instead of someone else? People can learn practical living skills on a day–to–day basis. It is important therefore that care workers recognize opportunities and give the appropriate support. If a person is living in a supported living environment, the opportunities to learn life skills can be effectively embedded on a regular basis. For example, while the support workers helping the person to do their shopping use public transport or access a service such as a cinema, there are opportunities to develop communication, organization and numeracy skills. When planning activities the support worker, with the person, should recognize and seize opportunities for that person to develop valuable learning and life skills. Both of the articles feature one long, main interview and one shorter interview towards the end of the article. The interviews have been included in each case to give the reader an account of the events in the article from one of the people involved. This is a good idea as people who were actually involved in the events of the article will be able to give more information on what actually happened, and will probably know things that no–one else does. Having interviews also makes the reader sympathise with the people involved, especially if it is coming from one of the people mentioned in the main first paragraph of the article. The people who put together the articles must make sure that everything they include in the interviews is relevant and that they are not too long. I think that the article that uses interviews and quotes better is probably Inches from tragedy, because all the information given is relevant to and informative about what happened. I also think this because the interviews featured are not too long and leave room in the article for other information. The Paracingulate sulcus is a structure in the brain that is associated with our monitoring of what is reality and what is not. With out this monitoring system people end up with disorders such as schizophrenia. The New York Times interprets the results of a study published by the University of Cambridge and University of Melbourne on the effects of the Paracingulate sulcus on how people monitor what is reality. The Study, "A Specific Brain Structural Basis for Individual Differences in Reality Monitoring," examines a variety of research on the matter and presents the hypothesis that the people with out a Paracingulate sulcus will have poorer monitoring of memory compared to people with a clear Paracingulate sulcus on either one or both sides of the brain. Even though both articles explain the exact same research, it is interesting to see the many differences of the two articles. The article was chosen for more then its connection to cognition and what is being studied in class. The article interested both participants in more ways than one. The idea of reality being a perception that changes from person to person is not something people think about explicitly. It is merely by reading the article that one can take interest in the fact that each person perceives the world a different way. • 32. Reflection About Identity Identity is very difficult to fully comprehend, but it is vital to the purpose of every man, woman, and child that has lived and ever will live on the earth. As precisely expressed by Erik Erikson, "In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity." As defined by Merriam–Webster, identity is "The distinguishing character or personality of an individual." However, this definition falls short of the true meaning of the word, as it does not openly state the deciding factor for the perception of a person's identity. For this reason, it is necessary to redefine the word in order to properly convey its meaning to those that do not fully understand it, as well as clarify by whom it is ascertained. Identity is how one perceives oneself, based primarily on the behaviors exhibited by this person. A more precise definition of identity could not have been taught to me any better than by my first venture from the state of Iowa to the valley town of Estes Park, Colorado. For a reason I still do not understand in its entirety, it brought me to better understand myself by truly comprehending in what esteem I hold myself, and perhaps what I one day strive to achieve. The novelty and charm of the place were greatest the first time I experienced it, and I felt an indescribable sense of peace that unfortunately did not entirely carry forward in future years. Conflicts Between The Police And The People Throughout American history we've had many instances where conflicts between the police and the people have occurred and it was difficult to find what exactly happened. They become 'he said she said' type of situations even when there may be a lot of evidence and eyewitness accounts because people want to see it for themselves. With having police body camera's it can be helped to eliminate these issues and finally work on helping with core issues there are today. Not all police officers are bad and not all people are good. However, we're in 2014 and we shouldn't have some of the problems we have. In 2008 it was recorded that males were more likely to receive threats or use of force and in 74% of these situations were viewed as excessive and included pushing or grabbing. It was reported that 19% of these conflicts included the person being injured. In statistics from 2011– 2012 it's been proven that in many shore communities that 44% of the arrests were black while they had made up only 15% of the population. As of 2012 in our own town we had a rate of 384.6 per 1000 residents were arrested if they were blacks v.s. a whopping 90.1 per 1000 residents if you were not black. The point is, race, racial profiling, and brutality also have a great deal to influence why this bill should be passed. Many people are afraid of many things such as death, heights, bugs, or public speaking; but the fear of change ranks high in the list of things that trigger anxiety (Radwan). Is there a reasonable answer why people neglect change nowadays? In fact, there is more than one answer to this question. Change has become such an important aspect of our everyday life that it is impossible to ignore. When it comes to the idea of change, most people will readily agree that some individuals try their hardest to avoid change. The reason behind this known theory is that those individuals don't fear change; they fear being changed (Rabadam). In the end, change is something that drives them away from wanting to experience other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, the main reason to fear failure is how we imagine how others will view us when we fail. For example, if an individual keeps doing the same thing over and over, then the results will never change. As Albert Einstein stated, "a person, who never made a mistake, never tried anything new" (Brenner). Failure is not the enemy, but a life–changing experience. It is a human experience, and it prepares the way for us to grow and transform our lives. Mistakes are essential to the development of life, just as change is. Nevertheless, change is said to prepare us for life and without change, life would persistently be the same. Admittedly, childhood experiences affect your adulthood. For instance, overprotective parents and parents who spoil their children are those who indirectly teach them to be afraid to change. In the same way, over protection can cause the children to be unready for the real world. When the kids do get out into the real world, they don't know how to handle it. The individual will be so used to what they knew when growing up that that is all they will expect. That same individual will not follow the pattern of change. A person that doesn't follow the pattern of change will most likely fear change itself. Furthermore, another reason people fear change is because they fear the past might replicate itself (Radwan). This reason links to the fear of failure in a way. As an illustration, a woman who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every shopper is categorized as either a proactive shopper, an aggressive shopper, or a wasteful shopper. The shopper that only buys the items on his list is the person who makes shopping quick, easy, and affordable. Unfortunately, that is how the world works, people are labeled and associated with certain groups. These labels force people into thinking that they have to look a certain way or follow popular trends. Just like Susannah Calahan in Brain on Fire, she suffers from an illness and during her recovery she criticizes herself based off of what society expects her to look like. Social norms are deeply entrenched in everyone's life to the point where Susannah tries to hide her sickness and put on a strong face just to avoid being labeled as abnormal. There is a sense of her fear of being ridiculed and alienated from her loved ones since she does not fulfill the common image society has on women. Susannah is embarrassed by her actions, her appearance and she refuses to accept that her new–self is even a part of her identity. Susannah does not view her post illness appearance as acceptable despite having no control over the outcome. Identity is in fact a matter of social construction since Susannah's self esteem and perception of herself deteriorates as she finds herself deviating from what is considered normal. One important aspect of Susannah's illness is that it causes her to dramatically shift from a sociable person to someone who cannot hold a conversation. Ever since the beginning of time, communication has never been considered foreign to any living creature. When you hear your family members, your peers, and other types of "influential" individuals communicate, your brain acts as a sponge in a sense and absorbs what information you hear from them. As I had stated previously, the attitudes about good and bad language come from "influential" individuals. Now, the reason I use the word influential is because it is almost impossible to pinpoint what people everyone sees or hears from and try to emulate what those influential people preach into their daily lives. Influential people may be parents, friends, celebrities, journalists, or government officials, basically those people who you feel have the biggest input/ impact on the way you think about things. One of the most powerful figures that we try to emulate from are celebrities, without a doubt. I am a straight, married man with many friends from all walks of life. These friends happen to include everyone from transgendered persons to straight persons, atheists to polytheists, and everyone in between. I consider myself open–minded, but do not mistake me for liberal–minded, as this term does not represent me. The line between hate and dislike is a rather thin one to say the least. The policy change debate–of which, if I may say, no one was invited to–of the private corporation that is the Target store franchise, is one that should not, and cannot be remarked upon by anyone in public office. There was an article last week regarding the possibility of Texas adopting a statewide bathroom policy that would require people to use the latrine that corresponds to their gender at birth. Perhaps, you, as I did, see the paradox created by the right. To be sticking their nose in business (a literal, private, business) where it does not belong by enforcing a state–governed rule on bathroom policy is ludicrous. Are these not the same people who complain about government making rules for private corporations? My statement earlier regarding the line between hate and dislike is growing ever more relevant. Sometimes, other people post over the notices of missing people and so, the missing people are not known. There are even times that the missing person simply does not want to be found and went away to a distant land. Essay about My Definition of Success Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. – Winston Churchill –– Success is defined as the favorable termination of attempts or endeavors and the accomplishment of one's goals. When I hear the word success, I think of my friend and my teacher, Mrs. Regina Kynes. I consider her successful because she has a strong family, a favorable career, and she is the most generous person that I know. Mrs. Kynes is respected and admired by those who see her as successful. Sometimes, however, there are difficult people and challenging situations that come up in life that can bring her down. Kynes deals with challenging people and situations by taking the "high road." She does what is right, both morally and ethically, and when people start to frustrate her, she still acts respectfully towards them. As she is being kind, to those frustrating people, she thinks, "[I hope] that my actions and reactions will influence them to make better choices," which goes back to advice her mother has given her. Kynes admits that the best advice she has ever received is from her mother: "Always take the high road," and "Kill them with kindness, no matter who they are or what they have done." Kynes continues to follow this advice to this day. Kynes added that what she takes away from her mother's advice is, "When you give to others, you will someday be rewarded. Pay it forward." Kynes has gained wisdom from her mother, and she has continued to pass wisdom to others. Kynes's advice to others is "Always be yourself, love yourself first, do what is right ... all of the time, treat others with respect, love and kindness, to lend a helping hand to those in need, and to work hard because things are free and your work ethic shows great character!" There are many things that Americans value and a few really are positive values, but definitely not all American values are important. All of these values have something in common though and that is they all are based off of how other people see each other. These values are money, possessions, physical features, religion, and how Americans idolize celebrities and view social status. Something that almost all Americans value the most is money. Money, everyone needs it and everyone wants more of it, no matter how much they already have. Americans do tend to be greedy and want all the money they can receive because without money you can't obtain something in this country. This is negative because it shows that Americans always want more. But there is a little bit of positive in this because it encourages people to get out and work so they can make more money. Money is something that all Americans want, and it is negative or something like that http://study.com/academy/lesson/concluding–sentence–definition–examples–starters.html Possessions, everyone no matter who they are or what they already have wants something else. • 64. Descriptive Essay About A House Arkansas, Only about a hour, maybe two hours long drive away from home. Over the course of the day we meet new and different people, eat good food, and give gifts. Everyone is overly affectionate and helps out in the kitchen. Squeezing around twenty people in the tiny house is a tight smoosh, even if our family is almost half of that group. The house itself may not be that tiny but we're all gathered in just the kitchen and living room, making it seem like a smaller space. At times, a few people stroll out the glass door, onto the patio and into the back yard, yet even then it feels just a tad crowded, especially since we were around people we'd never met. From long road trips to the ice cream punch to eating way too many rice krispie treats in one sitting, every part of that day went smoothly, giving off a joyful, pleasant vibe. Joyful is a great feeling to have around Christmas time. The best part? It was all captured in one sweet picture. Starting with my father, smiling into the camera with his fork mid–bite, his long sleeve shirt is beige like the walls of a new house. A Hoyt hat sits on his bald head, the camera giving his face a shiny glowing appearance. Next to him sits Mari, his girlfriend. She's the best friend of Maleeah, the host of this party and the person cooking everything we're enjoying. Mari's hair is closer to white than it is blonde, her roots still showing up on the darker side. Round sunglasses pull her hair out of her face. The lines on her blouse ... • 66. Importance of Ambitions in Life Essay Importance of Ambitions in Life Ambition is defined as a strong desire to obtain success, power, or riches or as something that you want very much to do or to obtain. Having an ambition represents everything to many people. The only purpose in a man's life is fulfilling his dream, because am ambition can be associated with a dream. And if this dream doesn't exist you can't say that you have lived your life to the full. In the moments of solitary meditation when we are alone with ourselves and we can no longer lie or delude ourselves, we ask the fundamental question: why do I have to die, why is it that my life must end, why is my existence finite, limited in time? Ambition is the catalyst that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The creative act is born from an irresistible impulse towards the absolute, that is the wish of the individual to lift his subjectivity to the maximum perfection allowed by his spiritual resources and then to transpose this degree of spiritual elevation into a concrete world. On the other hand, the creative act is born from the hope that people will recognize the value of his work and therefore remember his name forever. You should consider the first aspiration of the individual. We can assert that that it is dissolved in a paradox. Of course, the process of creation augments substantially the spiritual energies of the individual, it even makes him think that he represents the supreme measure of the generating principle of life, but the work, the product of this process does not succeed in conveying all the superior exigencies of the creator and, consequently, it does not completely confirm his exceptional self–appreciation during the creation of his work. But in my opinion when you have an ambition it means that you are living for fulfilling it, you live your life to the full, you are completely dedicated and focused on what you want to achieve or fulfil. When you have a certain ambition, even if it is a very strange one and you hope every day that one day you will fulfil it, you have passion and you give everything you have to see you dream come true. Personal Identity Essay Personal Identity Nell Bernstein is the author of "Goin' Gangsta, Choosin' Cholita: Claiming Identity," an essay describing how the youth in certain parts of the country are choosing their preferred identity rather than accepting their own. For example, in Bernstein's essay a girl named April, living in California, wants to be Mexican; therefore, she dresses like and attempts to talk in the same accent as a true Mexican, even though she is Anglo. The idea of people trying to change their identity just strikes me with stupidity. It is God's decision as to what color, nationality or such a person will be, and I believe He has a purpose for everything; therefore, each person should respect His decision with acceptance and serve Him well under the identity chosen for them. The biggest mistake of this essay is the misuse of the word "identity." Bernstein claims that, "Identity is not a matter of where you come from, what you were born into, what color your skin is," but rather, "It's what you wear, the music you listen to, the words you use..." (45). This is all wrong! Identity is exactly what she thinks it is not. The color of one's skin describes their race. That is one piece of their identity. Where they come from is their nationality. That is another piece. What they were born into, such as family, beliefs, religion etc...., is their culture, Furney 2 which is yet another piece. All these pieces together describes who a person is. Clothes, music, and accent only describe who a person appears to be. April, who is in fact Anglo and should be proud of it, dresses like a Mexican because she thinks this will make her Mexican, but it will not. Frankly, if I were Mexican and April came to me in her imitation Mexican costume trying to speak Spanish to me even though the only thing she probably knows in Spanish is, "Yo Queiro Taco Bell," it would annoy the hell out of me. ...
