Symbolic Interactionism
Sociology 10
Professor Arkadie
Symbolic Interaction Perspective There are several sociological perspectives including functionalism, conflict, social exchange, and sociological
imagination. The one that will be talked about within this paper is called symbolic interaction. Symbolic interaction does not focus on social structure
like other sociological perspectives do, symbolic interaction is based on small, mostly person to person ideas and perspectives on what symbols mean
between people in cultures, what interaction is like, and how interaction between people can impact or reflect upon society as a whole. (Gingrich)
Symbolic interaction is defined as "How people act toward things based on the meaning those things have for them; ... Show more content on

Social groups act differently amongst themselves versus as a whole within a societal environment. Someone within a certain social group may feel
importance, power and control. Within the subgroups, individuals define themselves and their place in society. They sometimes hope to influence
others to partake in their society and their norms. Symbolic interaction theory describes the family as a unit of interacting personalities and focuses
attention on the way people interact through symbols. One example of this theory is gang members. Gang members act as a family in their own
society and there are certain words, gestures, rules and roles that they abide to in this man made society. Some of the norms that are in this created
society might be understood when a person steps out into regular society, because we have different norms and roles. When someone steps into our
society, they might feel discomfort, have no sense of self, or may even turn to violence because they are dysfunctional because they have been
immersed in their society for so long and cannot easily adapt to the outside world. If a gang member throws up a gesture that is common in there sub
culture, other members will relate or understand the meaning of this nonverbal que, whereas nonmembers of the society may not. From a symbolic
interactionism's perspective, it is important to understand their symbols in order to understand this sub group's behavior. In this particular

How Did Social Darwinism Influence Hitler
Social Darwinism was a sociological theory popular in late nineteenth–century Europe and the United States. It merged Charles Darwin's theory of
natural selection and Herbert Spencer's sociological theories to justify imperialism, racism, and laissez–faire (conservative) social and economic
policies. Adolf Hitler was amongst those inspired and spurred on by Social Darwinism, which he used as a foundation for Nazi theory and race policies
in the years leading up to the Holocaust. In this paper I will discuss the profound influence of Darwinism on Hitler's ideology, and examine the ways
that the Nazi racial and biological policy grew out of a well–established and generally accepted scientific tradition.
"There is little doubt that the history of ethnocentrism, racism, nationalism, and xenophobia has been also a history of the use of science and the
actions of scientists in support of these ideas and social movements. In many cases it is clear that science was used merely as raw material or
evidence by ideologically interested political actors as proof of preconceived notions."

Social Darwinists argued that individuals and groups, just like plants and animals, competed with one another for success in life. They used this idea to
justify the status quo by claiming that the individuals (or groups of individuals) at the top of social, economic, or political hierarchies belonged there,
as they had competed against others and had proven themselves best adapted. Any social or political intervention that weakened the existing hierarchy,
they claimed, would undermine the natural

symptoms of his disease, and with the increased strength and vigor resulting from the increased diet, the pessimistic, melancholy diabetic becomes
optimistic and cheerful. Insulin is not a cure for diabetes; it is a treatment." (Sir Frederick Banting, Nobel Prize Lecture, 1923). There discovery of

Symbolic Interactionism And Social Psychology
The application paper
Symbolic interactionism is considered to be part of the building block of micro–sociological thinking, related to anthropology and social psychology
that bases the understanding of the society in communication and has greatly influenced the studies on media. This theory suggest that human
interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gesture and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meaning (Dictioinary). Symbolic
interaction is a range of ideas that discuss how we as humans interact with the symbols of society. In this Paper will discuss the theory of Symbolic
interactionism, its three premises that make up the theory, the roles of three major theorist that led to the development of the symbolic ... Show more

The second premise indicates that the meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction between humans. This reminds me
of myself as I was growing up. My mother primarily raised me and showed me right from wrong. She taught me religion, not to steal and many
essential things in life. Her socialization over time, allowed me to attach meaning to certain things in life. When I see elders I know to respect them,
when I see people in need I learned to help. The third premise suggests that these meaning are handled in, and modified through, an interpretative
process used by the person in dealing with the things he encounters (Blumer, 1984). This premise simply means that we can all hear the same thing but
may interpret them differently from one another. The meaning we attached to things may change over time. In some cases, new experiences, or social
interaction may change the way you views things thus giving it different meaning. Many theorist have shown interest in the Symbolic Interaction
theory. But there's three theorist that were heavily involved in the development of the concept. Herbert Blumer, George Herbert Mead, and Charles H
Cooley were the pioneers that laid the groundwork. Each of the theorist had a distinct view on human group conduct. Despite the differences in views
there were many similarities which gave full meaning to the theory.

Snow Falling On Cedars Change
Change is the act or instance of making or becoming different. How does a person change? Is it based on the individuals around them? Does the way
a person is raised change him or her? Throughout the novels of Great Expectations, Snow Falling on Cedars, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the film
David Copperfield, change comes in many forms. People mirror the beliefs of those around them.
People are obliged to do something they do not want to by those in control of them. In Snow Falling on Cedars, a Japanese–American girl named
Hatsue is told by her family all her life to stay away from the "hakujin" (white people). Hatsue and a boy named Ishmael were childhood friends since
the start, as they grew up, they started to become more intimate and closer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clara looks for someone to help her take care of David and comes across Mr. Murdstone, an evil, cruel, and cold–hearted man. He ends up giving Clara
no control over her own life. When David's mother sends David off to boarding school even though she did not wish to do so, she did it anyway
because Mr. Murdstone believed he should be trained to be a gentleman (David Copperfield). Clara, being a very caring mother, does not want to leave
her son's side. Although Mr. Murdstone does not feel that David is well mannered, he sends David off to boarding school. Clara does not want to
see David sent off to boarding school. With Mr. Murdstone having control of Clara, Clara has no choice but to watch as her beloved son gets sent
off to boarding school. Clara does not believe that David needs to go to boarding school, but since Mr. Murdstone has control of Clara she has to
follow his beliefs. Clara changed as soon as Mr. Murdstone arrived and caused her to mirror his beliefs. This shows how when someone comes into
another person's life and starts taking control, that person may do things he or she would not have wanted to

Great Expectations
Great Expectations Human nature is the psychological and social qualities that characterize humankind. Human nature separates humans from the rest
of the animal kingdom. The underlining theme of human nature is evident in Great Expectation by Charles Dickens use of his characters. A main
characteristic that Dickens displays is friendship. The friendship between Pip and Herbert is strong. Herbert was significant to Pip's growth in social
class and eventual to his revelation. "Friendship was one of the human characteristics Dickens enjoyed...by associating fellowship with good characters
and deeds, he made it known that he admires friendship." (MacAndrew 168) Herbert aided Pip when he first came to London and made the transition

She adopted Estella solo based on concept that all men were like Compeyson. Miss Havisham is the one who created Estella to be this heartless
creature. Estella was one of Miss Havisham pawns in her plan of revenge. "Estella doesn't play into her games anymore and makes her own living
with Drummle...Miss Havisham tries to control Pip and seduced him into the thoughts of being with Estella forever." (Chesterton 199) Pip was
the other pawn that Miss Havisham was playing. "But when I fell into the mistake I have so long remained in, at least you lead me on?" said Pip
"Yes, I let you on." Miss Havisham replied. (Dickens 334) Miss Havisham convinced Pip to think that Estelle was his soul mate knowing Estella
would never return the love. Miss Havisham spent the rest of her life on obtaining revenge on men. Like Miss Havisham, Magwitch sought revenge.
Compeyson was also the reason behind Magwitch plan to seek revenge. Unlike Miss Havisham, Magwitch wanted direct revenge on Compeyson.
Compeyson also used Magwitch for his own personal gain. This obsession leads to Magwitch unhappiness. When Magwitch achieves his goal of
revenge he does not gain happiness, but rather despair. Dickens demonstrations of revenge go against any notion that revenge is good, but rather we
should forgive those who trespass against us. Ungratefulness was a part of the collection of negative human characteristics that Dickens expressed.

Herbert Spencer And Imperialism
Herbert Spencer was one of the lead role models and inspirations in the creation of Darwinism. Born April 27th 1820, Spencer spent his childhood
living in Derby, Great Britain. His infantile life was depressing, growing up with his uncles who tortured him behind the curtains for 7 years
straight. Despite this, the leader philosopher went on to develop ideas and challenged the ideology behind imperialism. Being the creator of the
phrase, "survival of the fittest" Herbert weaved his way into Darwin's work being credited for everything. This increased his fame and popularity
receiving many followers of his theories. Spencer criticized man theories and tactics used by the government putting holt to imperialism. Herbert
Spencer was never a fan of the poor as he wrote multiple scripts explaining. While working with Karl Marx in this area at the time, they found that
the reason for the underprivileged being poor was due to the consequences of not having the right skillset or abilities to make the money others were
earning. Spencer put this as a quote which became famous later on, "Survival of the fittest". The first thing that was inaccurate about this statement
was the fact that Spencer was referring to what was taking place rather than paying no attention to the causes of the issue. It was obvious that the two
were not successful in the area receiving multiple discrepancies. He went on to say "If they are sufficiently complete to live, they do live, and it is
well they should

Social Colonialism And Social Darwinism
Social Darwinism was a sociological theory that merged Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and the work of Herbert Spencer, Malthus, and
other scientific and sociological theorists to justify imperialism, racism, and conservative economic policies. The overall acceptance of the power of
nature in defining human beings developed during the 18th century Enlightenment. Europe's exploration not only brought about immense economic
and agricultural growth, but also exposed them to "human behavior and life patterns within environments and under circumstances dramatically
different than their own" (4). The most popular catch phrases of Darwinism, "struggle for existence" and "survival of the fittest", when applied to the
life of man in society, suggested that nature would provide that the best competitors in a competitive situation would win, and that this process would
lead to continuing improvement" (6. Hoft). This misinterpreted sense of superiority engulfed much of society at the time and was used to justify the
logistics behind certain actions regarding capitalism, racism, and imperialism. Furthermore, it served as the backbone of some of the most heinous acts
imaginable including the genocide and sterilization of certain groups of people.
"The first business of a colonist is to clear the country of wild beasts, and the most noxious of all wild beasts is the wild man", unknown (87). Social

The Philosophical Evolution Of Metaphysics Essay
The Philosophical Evolution of Metaphysics: The Influence of Metaphysics on Poets and How It Pertains to Today Society.
Imagine, the year is 2150 and a student is sitting at her desk looking within at latest technology, she thinks about lost poets that history books have
shunned for the significance of more famous poets. As a child in modern society, the importance of lesser known poets, such as Thomas Traherne and
George Herbert, are considered valuable for their philosophical influence in poetry. Over the course of time literature has become a melting pot of ideas
borrowed from other poets and literary works, which are coagulated into one another to make a new idea. People in modern society need to understand
the importance of remembrance in the similarities in the backgrounds, metaphysical influences, and written works of Thomas Traherne and George
Herbert.
It is astonishing how both poets have similar upbringings with almost a 100–year gap between them. The background of Thomas Traherne presented
by Richard Firth has stated that "Thomas Traherne was born within the wall of Hereford City in 1637 (page 1)." At the age of five, the British Civil
War marched into his town where they beheaded King Charles I. Later that year, Treharne left to attend the Hereford Cathedral School. After
graduation, he then attended Brasenose College in Oxford, earning his BA (Bachelor of the Arts) in 1656. During the years of 1657–1660, he wrote

How Does Joe Gargery Influence Pip's Life
Great Expectations, written by Charles Dickens, is a classic novel from 1860, displaying the influence of people on a person's life. In the novel, Pip's
life is predestined until he acquires property, showing him the difference between his life and the life he wants to live. Throughout Great Expectations,
Charles Dickens emphasizes kindness through friendships with Joe, Biddy, and Herbert by their thoughts and actions to influence Pip in a positive
way when confronted with a change of lifestyle. Joe Gargery is Pip's father figure; his first true friend and influence in the novel. The first time Joe
shows kindness to Pip is at Christmas dinner when Mr. Pumblechook and other friends of Mrs. Joe tell Pip he is an all around awful child. Joe ... Show

The first time they meet, Pip states, "Herbert Pocket had a frank and easy way with him that was very taking. I had never seen anyone then, and I
have never seen anyone since, who more strongly expressed to me, in every look and tone, a natural incapacity to do anything secret and mean"
(138). Dickens uses this sentence to separate Herbert out from all the other characters Pip has met. Herbert shows kindness naturally and easily
toward Pip and it comforts him and influences him to reciprocate the gesture back to him and others. Pip admires the separation in Herbert when he
says, "What a hopeful disposition you have!" and Herbert responds by saying, "I ought to have for I have not much else. I must acknowledge,
by–the–bye, that the good sense of what I have just said is not my own, but my father's" (195). Herbert is kind enough to give credit to the person
who gave him what he owns and not to be dependent on those things. The influence of Herbert's kindness on Pip is greatest because he was there
when Pip was transitioning from his past life into his new life of money. Pip's kindness is finally seen when he starts to give money to Herbert in
chapter 36 of the novel. Herbert teaches him he can be humble and independent, and Pip shows his kindness by giving Herbert the life he dreams

How Did Charles Darwin Influence Western Society
The 1800s was a time period filled with not only many great advancements, but over all a variety of people who sparked change within the Western
societies. One of these people who prompted change within their society and societal views was Charles Darwin. Darwin developed the idea and
theory of evolution; which basically stated and supported that all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor . Forcing change and
revaluation throughout the Western world, connecting to "The Role of the Individual in History" theory. Basically, discrediting the church, and their
idea of Creationism being that God created all, showing that it was systems and social forces that helped to shape the importance of evolution . Overall

Darwin proposed this idea of Natural selection in 1859 with the publication of his book The Origin of Species . This theory caused great change in
many aspects of the Western society, mainly in the way society viewed the creation of life. In the heavily religious society of the 1800s Darwin's
theory contradicted all previous beliefs held by the churches, thus posing a threat to the established social and political order . This contradiction was
evident in the details of Darwin's theories which helped support evolution, this was done by stating that nature selected the best adapted varieties to
survive and reproduce . A theory which greatly differed from the previously instituted belief that God was the creator of all life, which was the reason
sparking mass upheaval from the churches, as well as the people. This drastic change within society is what made Charles Darwin such an important

Deism In The 17th Century
Deism is a belief based solely on reason and nature, acknowledging the existence of a god, but denying any involvement in the human world beyond
creation. Deism rejects the ideas of faith–based and "revealed" religions (those who claim to have received a special revelation from God) such as
Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It also rejects any religious knowledge found in sacred texts such as the Bible and the Quran ("Deism" 94). Instead of
having faith and believing that God is in control, Deists only believe in reason and use that as their guide to truth ("Deism" 94). Deism is considered a
natural religion, accepting what God has created and applying human knowledge and reason as a way to exist and thrive within the natural laws of the
universe. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before this time, those who opposed Christianity were labeled as Atheists. Atheism was the most common false perception of Deism. This new branch
of Philosophy lacked leaders and organization making it hard to understand and often misinterpreted. Many, of great intellect and perseverance, worked
to establish and justify this new movement. In the 17th century, many different politician, philosophers and scientists were coming on stage with ideas
that questioned faith and focused on reason and science. It was not until Lord Edward Herbert of Cherbury published his writings about the five innate
religious ideas ("Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert"). Herbert inspired other philosophers, such as Voltaire, Jean–Jacques Rousseau, and Immanuel
Kant of Germany, who picked up and expanded on his ideas of Deism. Finally, Deism had established core beliefs, identifying it as neither Christian nor
Atheist, and focused on reason and nature. Large numbers of individuals began to separate themselves from Christian beliefs and joined this movement

Examples Of Social Darwinism
Social Darwinism is a set of ideologies introduced by Herbert Spencer in the nineteenth century. These principles were used by imperialists as a means
of justification and proof of their right to colonize land overseas. Social Darwinism is an immoral evil that cannot be ethically justified. To further
understand the immorality behind using Social Darwinism and the even greater immorality behind using it as an excuse for overseas expansion, we
must understand the origins and foundations of which Social Darwinism is based. It all began with an English man named Charles Darwin and his
newly introduced perspective on the evolution of life. Charles Darwin was a nineteenth century scientist and natural philosopher who came up with a

Spencer applied the principles of Darwinism to human social, political and economic issues and proclaimed that the survival of the fittest applies
to human societies which became Social Darwinism. In John Offer's "Critical Assessments of Leading Sociologists" he traces Spencer's influence
and dissects various points made by Herbert Spencer himself. He quotes Herbert Spencer when analyzing Spencer's perspective of Social
Darwinism. "The prosperity of a species is best supervised when among adults each experiences the good and evil results of his own nature and
consequent conduct." Spencer also states "It is much better that the ruminant animal, when deprived by age of the vigor which made its existence a
pleasure, should be killed by some beast of the prey, than that it should linger out a life made painful by infirmities, and eventually die of
starvation." It is at this point that Spencer begins to cross Darwinism's take on natural selection to social conditions. While Spencer is still speaking
in reference of animals, he describes the death of animals as a means of relieving their pain and suffering. This is where Spencer begins to speak in
reference to humans. "A sad population of imbeciles would our schemers fill the world with, could their plans last. A sorry kind of human constitution
would they make for us – a constitution continually going wrong, and needing to be set right again – a constitution ever

Character Relationships in Great Expectations Essay
Character Relationships in Great Expectations
No novel boasts more varied and unique character relationships than Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. This essay will serve to analyze three
different relationships, paying special attention to the qualities that each uphold. Dickens created three types of character relationships: true friends,
betrayed friends, and loving relatives.
First, the true friends in Great Expectations were Pip and Herbert, who stuck together against all animosity. Pip and Herbert were a humorous duo; they

All of this Pip did for his best friend; he took money out of his own pocket and used it to make his friend's life better. The friends cared deeply for
each other and loved each other sincerely. Every incident they found themselves in served to deepen their friendship.
Next, the loving relatives of the novel were Wemmick and his father, the Aged Parent, for there were no other characters in Great Expectations that
not only tolerated each other, but truly loved each other. They were sweet hearted towards one another, as was demonstrated when Wemmick had
Pip over for dinner. He introduced Pip to his father as he let him in. The first thing he asked Pip to do for his father's sake was nod at him. The Aged
Parent was extremely hard of hearing, so whenever he told someone something, he took their nodding as a sign that they had heard him. For his father,
Wemmick sweetly asked Pip to nod at the Aged Parent in order to make him feel good and understood. Another aspect of Wemmick and the Aged
Parent's relationship was they were caring of one another. When Wemmick went out, the Aged Parent was in charge of the house. To prevent his father
from letting strangers in and putting himself in danger, as well as to alert his father when he returned home, Wemmick designed an invention that

Great Expectations By Charles Dickens
Twelve–year–old Charles dickens gets ready for bed after a long day at the blacking house. These Victorian–aged memories will provide him with
many ideas for his highly acclaimed novel Great Expectations. Set in 1830 England, Great Expectations is a coming–of–age story about a common
innocent boy named Pip and his road to becoming a gentleman through the influence of others. Pip is influenced both positively and negatively by
Estella, Herbert, and Magwitch.
Estella left a huge impression on Pip and one of the biggest personality changes he went through, was how self–conscious he became. When innocent
polite grateful Pip has his first visit at the Satis House, he is ordered to play cards with Miss Havisham 's lovely adopted daughter Estella. All seems to
go well until she begins to call him out on his appearance and dialect. " 'He calls knaves, jacks this boy! ' said Estella with disdain before our first
game out. 'And what coarse hands he has and what thick boots ! '" (Dickens, 60). Once Estella starts to remark on how "common" Pip was, he
immediately begins to become more self aware. He soon becomes ashamed of his class and his "common" friend Joe, essentially dedicating his life to
being a gentleman to get his "dream girl". Not only did Estella make Pip feel self conscious just at the Satis House, but she ultimately scarred him and
left him feeling unhappy about his "commonness" all throughout his younger years.

Social Class Influence on the Individual
"Poor as a church mouse" vs. "born with a silver spoon in your mouth" are contrasting themes in this book of hardships and life trials. In Great
Expectations by Charles Dickens, the main character Pip interacts with characters of various social groups. These groups directly or indirectly, help Pip
understand his own opportunities and purpose in life. From these interactions, it becomes clear that social class influences how people interact and view
one another as well as their opportunities in life.
Some people do not have the same opportunity as others of getting education. This contrast is shown in the life circumstances of two characters of
different social classes. Joe (uncle to Pip) had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only in Pip's day, but for centuries, people have treated one another according to their wealth. Early in the history of the United States voting
rights were limited by gender, race, and wealth. Only white males with property had voting rights. It was said that, "...The American class system has
persisted since the nation's birth. The notion of social equality was so restricted in the late eighteenth century that neither the term nor even the concept
of equality appeared in the Constitution or Bill of Rights."(Martin Jr. and Sullivan). Social class discrimination was a big part of this time period in
Great Britain as well. Pip felt this discrimination before he had money and after he lost his money.
Today, as in Pips time period, people are categorized into social classes using various criteria. Wealth is just one of the characteristics that influence
someone's placement in a social class. Social class is defined as, "...a group of people who share a common status or position in society. Social
classes represent differences in wealth, power, employment, family background, and other qualities." (Cohen). In the past, wealth was most likely to
be the biggest factor for placement in social class. Today other criteria as well would impact social class placement. For Pip, his change of income
landed him in various social classes.
It is difficult but not impossible to move up in social class. Both Pip and his friend Herbert moved up in social class with the help of

Charles Darwin, The Most Influential Nineteenth Century...
In the 19th century, scientific research progressed rapidly outside the world of industry and technology (McKay 744). British scientist, Charles Darwin,
was the most influential nineteenth–century evolutionary thinker. Darwin spent his early career, amassing enormous amounts of biological and
geological data from his voyage to South America (Fiero 3). In 1859, he published his classic work, The Origin of Species by Means of Natural
Selection, where he summarizes his theory of evolution with the thought of struggle for survival, or natural selection. Furthermore, natural selection is
the idea of groups of species surviving through generations by adapting to changes in the environment and using certain characteristics as an advantage.
In addition, natural selection challenged traditional ideas about nature and world order, and it was also taken steps further by many thinkers. English
philosopher, Herbert Spencer, saw the human race driven forward to ever–greater specialization and progress by a brutal economic struggle that
determined the "survival of the fittest" (McKay 745). The notion of a body of thought drawn from the ideas of Charles Darwin that applied the theory
of biological evolution to human affairs and saw the human race as driven by an un–ending economic struggle that would determine the survival of the
fittest defines Social Darwinism (McKay 745). As European and American upper class sought to extend political and economic power, Social
Darwinism proved to

Herbert George Wells Accomplishments
When Herbert George Wells was an old man, he once told a friend that he wanted "G–– D––– you all: I told you so." engraved on his tombstone. It is
important to add to this statement that during his lifetime, H.G. Wells made many predictions that turned out to be surprisingly accurate, including the
rise of major cities and suburbs, and the splitting of an atom. Starting in the nineteenth century and continuing into the twentieth century, Herbert
George Wells wrote many books influencing the way people live and see the world around them. Two of his most remembered works areThe Time
Machine, and The War of the Worlds; both of which teach people about the unexpected. In The Time Machine, Wells wants to warn people not to get
too comfortable. Just because things are going well at the moment, doesn't provide an accurate reading for things that are to come in the future. In
The War of the Worlds, similarly, Wells is trying to prepare people for the unexpected. This is somewhat of an irony because H.G. Wells's cause of
death was an unrecognized liver tumor. Herbert George Wells tries to convey the idea that people must always be on their toes in life because anything
can come and destroy you when you aren't mentally or physically prepared. Herbert George Wells goes through... Show more content on

|Biography: Herbert Spencer |
Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) was an English philosopher, scientist, engineer, and political economist. In his day his works were important in
popularizing the concept of evolution and played an important part in the development of economics, political science, biology, and philosophy.

His views concerning a science of sociology are elaborated in two major works, Descriptive Sociology (published in 17 volumes, 1873–1934) and The
Study of Sociology (1873).
Spencer was particularly influential in the United States until the turn of the century. According to William Graham Sumner, who used The Study of
Sociology as a text in the first sociology course offered in an American university, it was Spencer's work which established sociology as a separate,
legitimate field in its own right. Spencer's demand that historians present the "natural history of society," in order to furnish data for a comparative
sociology, is also credited with inspiring James Harvey Robinson and the others involved in the writing of the New History in the United States.
Economic Theories
Social philosophy in the latter part of the 19th century in the United States was dominated by Spencer. His ideas of laissez–faire and the survival of the
fittest by natural selection fitted very well into an age of rapid expansion and ruthless business competition. Spencer provided businessmen with the
reassuring notion that what they were doing was not just ruthless self–interest but was a natural law operating in nature and human society. Not only
was competition in harmony with nature, but it was also in the interest of the general welfare and progress. Social Darwinism, or

Not All Street Gangs Were Formed For Ill Doing
Not all street gangs were formed for ill doing. Many people might think down on the creation of gangs but it is a part of survival in their region. Street
gangs, which pull peers into gangs for protection and social status, assemble to protect their neighborhood, family and friends from other street gangs
thus causing rising crime rate and innocent people dying because of this.
First off, there are a few definitions for gangs because authorities had a hard time explaining what a gang even is. "Walter Miller (1982:313) contrasts
gangs with law violating youth groups, which he defines as "an association of three or more youths whose members engage recurrently in illegal
activities with the cooperation and moral support of their companions." This definition of law – violating youth groups does not include structure or
territory, two important elements of Miller's definition of youth gangs. Spergel (1984:200) similarly defined delinquent groups as "an association of
two or more youths, usually between the ages of ten and seventeen years, who are engaged in acts defined as illegal"(Covey, Herbert. Street Gangs
throughout the world.Springfield,IL: Charles C Thomas,2010.Print). "Groups of youths considered deviant youth groups (and no one knows for certain
the extent to which these groups referred to as gangs) did not exist in any large number in the United States until the nineteenth century, although one

Analysis of Chapters 1 through 8 of Great Expectations
Plot and Setting– The plot starts out with a little boy name Phillip Pirrip. It is a first person narrative about a boy back in the nineteenth century. The
first eight chapters deal mostly with Pip's childhood years. It also deals with who Pip is, and his family. In the beginning of the story Pip introduces
himself, and introduces his dead parents. He is in the graveyard, and then a scary looking man comes up. The man threatens him. The plot of the story
I think is good because it deals a lot with the struggles in a child. He has no one to turn to. The author really helped us relate to the story.

Miss Havisham secretly wants Estella to break Pip's heart. She is a very obscure lady. Biddy is a character that cares very much for Pip. She
understands Pip more than Pip does. Pip doesn't like Biddy, because she is to common. She is the better girl though.
Personal Response– So far I really enjoy the book. Charles Dickens really pulls me into the book. He uses great figurative language that makes you
feel sorry for a character. The people in this book seem so innocent and harmless. Well, except the guy that threatened Pip. They all also seem to live
hard lives. They don't have all the benefits that we have today. They have to scrounge around for stuff we never would have to scrounge around for.
What is really neat about it, is that they get an enjoyment out of life. They are not well off either. I can't wait to read on further into Charles Dickens
novel.
Vocabulary– So far in this novel there is no vocabulary that really comes to mind. I though I would use this section to talk about figurative
language. Charles Dickens uses a lot of figurative language. He says that when Pip goes up into his room, he is in the dark. Literally that means he
does not have a candle, so therefore he is in the dark. Figuratively we can interpret it in many ways. One way is to say that Pip isn't a very smart kid.
He is and ignorant person. When someone says that someone is in the dark, they usually mean that they are naГЇve. Later on in the story, Pip

Herbert Spencer, Social Darwinism, Personal Thoughts
A Biography of Herbert Spencer, His Contributions to Sociology, and How my Personal Thoughts Were Awakened
Jessica McCreary
CCBC Dundalk
Abstract
This paper discussed the life of Herbert Spencer (Spencer) and his contributions to the field of Sociology found from print (textbook) and non–print
sources (online). Each article touched base on Spencer's life, but each described it differently. Over all, the article discussed how Spencer was
homeschooled and raised by his father and uncle (Delaney, 2003) and how he was the founder of social Darwinism and how he "coined the term
'survival of the fittest,'" (Ferris, K., & Stein, J., 2014, p. 21). Spencer's major books that he has written are in this paper as well. This paper also
discusses how my own personal thoughts were awakened by his theoretical concept of social Darwinism.

A Biography of Herbert Spencer, His Contributions to Sociology, and How my Personal Thoughts Were Awakened Many people have suggested that
Charles Darwin coined the term "survival of the fittest," but it was actually coined by Spencer as he referred to the changes in a society (Ferris, K.,
& Stein, J., 2014, p. 21). All of Spencer's ideas and theories on social Darwinism were thought of even before Charles Darwin began exploring the idea
of evolution (Wee, A., 2013). To understand how the idea of social Darwinism came about, the life of Spencer should be researched. This paper

Great Expectations By Charles Dicken
In Charles Dicken's novel Great Expectations there is a wide diverse cast of characters who play different significant roles that affect the character
development of Pip. One of the unsung heroes throughout the book, that's role can be often overlooked is Herbert Pocket. At first glance, it can
seem as if Herbert does not have as much of an influence on Pip as he tends to blend into the background, along with the fact that at different points
can compare to other minor characters that only show up when they are needed to help move the plot along. Herbert stands out from this crowd
due to different factors in his relationship with Pip, and how this association allows him to be able to affect and help mold Pip's character. This
close bond began with Pip's first experience with how a gentleman would react in different circumstances that he uses as an expectation as he takes
the path to become a gentleman himself. On this path to becoming a gentleman Pip confides in Herbert many times, and seeks his advice that
ultimately directs Pip's decision on whatever topic he went to Herbert asking for help on. Herbert never fails to come to Pip's aid, proving his
trustworthiness, always doing so with a cheery attitude that Pip later reflects upon how it influence over him and others as well. This further engraves
the trust and friendship that Pip and Herbert share, Herbert being there to provide Pip with a family type of love between Pip's different father figures

The Importance Of Socialization
Socialization is the lifelong process in which people learn the attitudes, values, and behaviors appropriate for members of a particular culture. We
often go into a place and we can tend to judge people. By the language or color or what they wear. It happens all the time. This is just a natural habit
for most human beings. I have even walked into walmart before thinking to myself " I do not belong here. I do not speak the language that all these
other people are speaking. I am only in Warwick right?"

He explains how these results from our imagination isn't alway correct. Usually they are incorrect. A real life example of this is when a teacher
criticizes a student on their paper, the teacher must think i'm stupid, I am stupid. This was just like what happened to me at work yesterday. One
of my babies that I take care of was going home because her father came to pick her up. I told him she was in the playroom and he went down there
and I had to call him back because I forgot she was sleeping. He came back and I felt like such an idiot and I was thinking to myself "he must think I
am an idiot for this one. Like how could I forget about his child sleeping?" I apologised for the mistake and I still felt like he hated me for it even
though he said it was fine and her parents are really nice anyways.

He explains that the preparatory stage is when children imitate people around them (especially family members who the continuously interact with).

He felt social acts that are affected on the unself– conscious and the self– conscious level.
Unself– conscious/ non–significant gestures are like animalistic responses. Self– conscious/ significant gestures are most human intercourse. Mead
work focused more on Self– conscious/ significant gestures, these gestures require thought and requires taking on the role of the other in order to
predict the appropriate response. He said human thought rises when there are symbols that stimulate in the individual a response. According the slides
on Mead, Symbolic interaction requires interpretation or understanding the meaning of the actions or remarks of the other person. It also requires
definition or indicating to another how he is to act. This means communication with others and understanding it can lead to self–conscious adjustments

Consciousness is not a given; it's emergent.

The Importance Of Greed In Great Expectations By Charles...
In life, fortunes are won and lost. Both enemies and friends are made and destroyed. People often say that fortunes impact relationships, but that is not
true. The novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, proves the inaccuracy of that statement. It is not wealth that annihilates true friendships, but
the greed of man and how he acts in his immaturity. Even though it may seem that wealth affects relationships on the surface, once you begin to look
into it you find that these relationships are not true at all. In fact, wealth has no control over true friendship in the least. These points are all
demonstrated in Great Expectations. In the first place, it is proven that greed, not wealth, destroys any harmony a person enjoys with another. In
Great Expectations, Pip (the main character) quickly and greedily accedes to leave his home and best friend for possible wealth. His friend and
protector, Joe, doesn't want him to leave but Pip doesn't even notice. Dickens writes, "But I [Pip] encouraged Joe at the time. I was lost in the mazes of
my future fortunes, and could not retrace the by–paths we had trodden together" (pg. 110). Pip's greed makes him blind to Joe's sorrow and ruins their
close companionship. If Pip wasn't so selfish, he would have completely ignored the option to leave behind his loved ones and would have found a
much better companion in Joe. Greed, not wealth, terminated that relationship in the book and can ruin many others in life. Not only does greed

Different Qualities of a Gentleman Portrayed by Charles...
Different Qualities of a Gentleman Portrayed by Charles Dickens in Great Expectations
In this essay I will be looking at how the different qualities of a 'gentleman' is portrayed, by Charles Dickens, throughout "Great Expectations".
In the beginning of the story a 'gentleman' is seen, through Pip, as someone with wealth, education and high social status. This materialistic definition
of a gentleman can be seen in the description of the character Bentley Drummle, who clearly isn't a gentleman, "… he was idle, proud, niggardly,
reserved and suspicious. He came of rich people down in Somersetshire, who had nursed this combination of qualities until they made the discovery
that it was just of age ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To pip being a 'gentleman' also meant that you had to be respected and when he 'becomes a gentleman' he is treated respectfully by Trabb when goes
to buy clothes when before he wasn't even looked at.
Magwitch's view of a 'gentleman' is someone who can be made using money. From the reaction Pip receives from society, Magwitch believes he has
made a 'gentleman' out of Pip.
Herbert, a 'true gentleman' in the novel, is regarded throughout the story by pip as a 'gentleman'. First it was because of his class and his manners
during the fight. Also for the fact that he decided to marry Clara to relieve her from taking care of her drunk father. Herbert's overwhelming
politeness and patience is particularly contrasted to Pip's increasing rudeness and bad behaviour when Joe comes to stay. Herbert treats him better than
Pip himself. The fact that Hebert is a 'gentleman' is surprising as his mother especially is rude and lazy while his uncles and aunts are all
money–grabbing and attempt to please Miss Havisham for her money although they have no real love for her.
Another 'true gentleman' is Joe, although he lacks the materialistic appearance of a 'gentleman', we can see through his actions and words that he is a
'true gentleman'.

By observing this theory, readers can understand that the oppression and stereotypes that face African American women are mostly learned through
communication. For instance, the idea that women should take care of a child are exchanged through conversation like: "When you will be old, you
will have children," or just the fact that often parents will buy baby doll for their girl suggesting that one day she will have a to take care of a baby.
For African American people, they can learn through conversation a lot of stereotypes about the African American (new racism discourse). For
example, someone will ask "where are you from," while this person is born in America, but because he has darker skin color, people through
communication makes them feel like they are "different" physically. So, trough interactions, this person will associate their identity with the
conversation they had and the social stereotypes they learned. This is associated to intersectionality, because African American women will learn their
identity with the perception of the society on gender and ethnicity (Wood,

What Is The Root Of Social Darwinism
"The survival of the fittest"– the root of Social Darwinism. Charles Darwin, who was a naturalist ruled out that an adaptable species would only
survive and reproduce. The concept is the same in Social Darwinism, but was not introduced by Darwin. Social Darwinists such as Herbert Spencer
and William Sumner claimed that in a society, only the wealthiest and powerful survives in contrast with the poor and impotent. This applies especially
to the people living under Laissez–faire capitalism in which the government does not control the business. Andrew Carnegie's 'gospel of wealth'
contradicted with the common believes of Social Darwinism. Andrew proposed that the wealthy should distribute their wealth to level up the
discrepancy between people. Spencer, Sumner, the famous Darwinists advocated that life of a human was a struggle for existence, where only the best
thrives. Human life was basically contrasted with organisms. Darwinists held belief that the wealthy will have more independence, basic needs, and
sophisticated living, and the poor left out to die. They thought that poor were unfit for the survival, and thus should be aided. ... Show more content on

Book Review of 'Great Expectations'
Great Expectations Introduction In his novel Great Expectations, published in1861, Charles Dickens examines the class system of Victorian England
and the effect wealth and position had on the lives of the people living during the period. The novel follows the life of Philip Pirrip (Pip) from his
childhood as an orphan being raise by Joe Gargery (his brother–in–law) and his sister (simply known as Mrs. Joe in the novel). The story concerns
Pip's efforts to become a gentleman and win the affections of Estella, the adopted daughter of Miss Havisham a lady of means. This paper will
explore the effects wealth and money had on Pip, Miss Havisham and Joe. Throughout the novel the actions of these characters demonstrate the
values of loyalty, affection, and benevolence is more important than wealth and class. Discussion The protagonist of the novel, Pip, is deeply
driven to better his position in life and marry Estella. Toward this end he disassociates himself from the people who care about him the most
because he is embarrassed by their course dress and manners. Pip was mortified to learn that Joe, who was a blacksmith from the working class and
had taken him in when he was orphaned, was coming to London to visit him while he was learning to be a gentleman, "If I could have kept him
away by paying money, I certainly would have paid money" (209). At this point in the story Pip desire for status outweighs his loyalty and affection
for Joe. However, later in the tale

President Herbert Hoover
Herbert Clark Hoover was the 31st president of the United States.
During his first year in office the Wall Street crash of 1929 occurred. He was blamed for the resulting collapse of the economy, and his unpopular
policies brought an end to a brilliant career in public office. After the inauguration ofFranklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933, however, Hoover remained a
leading critic of the New Deal and a spokesman for the Republican party.
Early Life
Born on Aug. 10, 1874, the son of a blacksmith in the Iowa village of

Hoover's public reputation was enormous as a result of his activities in these offices, and some persons looked upon him as a presidential candidate

Essay on Charles Dickens' Great Expectations
Great Expectations' main character, Phillip Pirrip– generally known as Pip– had a rough upbringing as a child. His sister, Mrs. Joe had "brought him up
by hand", after their parents and five brothers had all been laid to rest many years ago. Another character, Herbert Pocket experienced a bizarre
childhood, though in a different manner. Charles Dickens' Great Expectations develops through the novel following Pip, a young "common boy" who
grew up in the countryside. As he matured so did his love for a girl of higher class, Estella. However, being a common boy, Pip was not good enough
for his Estella, thus once he was given an opportunity to become a gentleman in London he seized it without much hesitation. Charles Dickens' had his

Estella also is a victim to her guardian in the novel. She too is never given the chance to be her own person and live life to its fullest. Estella is
conditioned by her guardian, Miss Havisham, to make men suffer, and in return it is Estella who will be made to suffer for her guardian's actions.
Miss Havisham is a severely disturbed old woman who has adopted Estella. Miss Havisham was abandoned on her wedding day and as a result she
forever maintains hatred toward men. Thus for her dirty work, Miss Havisham uses Estella to meet this purpose. Pip concludes that Miss Havisham

affection, and wounded pride, found vengeance in". Miss Havisham makes Estella have a fear of men being close to her and not to allow
herself to become attached to them emotionally. Dickens' made Estella an almost identical copy of Frankenstein: trained to perform specific tasks for
the pleasure of their guardian. However someday, they crack and see the illness in their lives. Estella was Miss Havisham's toy. Estella never

and their lifestyle. For example, Herbet viewed money as a blessing but not something that necessarily brings him happiness; however, for Pip he can
never have enough money and it is his idea of happiness. Herbert was born wealthy so in his state of mind it is casual to have exceptional amount of

After the benefactor he lost control and waste it the second he got his hands on it. He spended all so fast and abused all that he had.
The perspective of money varies for both Herbert and Pip. The income that Herbert receives is good enough for him and even exceeds his
expectation. He feels that money does bring happiness into his life, but money is not necessary to be happy. In Pip's' perspective, money is a
pathway to greatness and is necessary in order to obtain a sense of happiness. As soon as Pip was able to get his hand on money, he took advantage
of it which caused him to experience debt. In Chapter 39 the author states, "He was a convict, a few year ago, and is a ignorant common fellow
now, for all he's lucky,' what do I say? I says to myself, 'If I ain't a gentleman, nor yet ain't got no learning, I'm the owner of such. All of you owns
stock and land; which on you owns a brought–up London gentleman?"(Dickens 78). In this scene, it portrays Magwitch to be very giving with his
money since he is Pip's' benefactor. Magwitch is giving him his money to Pip because he feel bad of what happened in the past, Pip gave his food to
Magwitch. However, Magwitch actually tries to use his money to buy the status of a "gentleman", where Pip understands that money can never

Herbert Spencer first used the phrase, after reading Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, in his Principles of biology 1864, in which he drew
parallels between his own economic theories and Darwin's biological ones:" This survival of the fittest, which I have here sought to express in
mechanical terms, was that which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Herbert Spencer has well expressed the same idea by the Survival of the fittest. The term "natural selection" is in some respects a bad one, as it seems to
imply conscious choice; but this will be disregarded after a little familiarity". He defended his analogy as similar to language in chemistry, and to
astronomers depicting the "attraction of gravity as ruling the movements of the planets", or the way in which "agriculturists speak of man making
domestic races by his power of selection". He had "often personified the word Nature; for I have found it difficult to avoid this ambiguity; but I mean
by nature only the aggregate action and product of many natural laws,– and by only the ascertained sequence of

Symbolic Interactionism Perspective

  • 1. Symbolic Interactionism Sociology 10 Professor Arkadie Symbolic Interaction Perspective There are several sociological perspectives including functionalism, conflict, social exchange, and sociological imagination. The one that will be talked about within this paper is called symbolic interaction. Symbolic interaction does not focus on social structure like other sociological perspectives do, symbolic interaction is based on small, mostly person to person ideas and perspectives on what symbols mean between people in cultures, what interaction is like, and how interaction between people can impact or reflect upon society as a whole. (Gingrich) Symbolic interaction is defined as "How people act toward things based on the meaning those things have for them; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social groups act differently amongst themselves versus as a whole within a societal environment. Someone within a certain social group may feel importance, power and control. Within the subgroups, individuals define themselves and their place in society. They sometimes hope to influence others to partake in their society and their norms. Symbolic interaction theory describes the family as a unit of interacting personalities and focuses attention on the way people interact through symbols. One example of this theory is gang members. Gang members act as a family in their own society and there are certain words, gestures, rules and roles that they abide to in this man made society. Some of the norms that are in this created society might be understood when a person steps out into regular society, because we have different norms and roles. When someone steps into our society, they might feel discomfort, have no sense of self, or may even turn to violence because they are dysfunctional because they have been immersed in their society for so long and cannot easily adapt to the outside world. If a gang member throws up a gesture that is common in there sub culture, other members will relate or understand the meaning of this nonverbal que, whereas nonmembers of the society may not. From a symbolic interactionism's perspective, it is important to understand their symbols in order to understand this sub group's behavior. In this particular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Did Social Darwinism Influence Hitler Social Darwinism was a sociological theory popular in late nineteenth–century Europe and the United States. It merged Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and Herbert Spencer's sociological theories to justify imperialism, racism, and laissez–faire (conservative) social and economic policies. Adolf Hitler was amongst those inspired and spurred on by Social Darwinism, which he used as a foundation for Nazi theory and race policies in the years leading up to the Holocaust. In this paper I will discuss the profound influence of Darwinism on Hitler's ideology, and examine the ways that the Nazi racial and biological policy grew out of a well–established and generally accepted scientific tradition. "There is little doubt that the history of ethnocentrism, racism, nationalism, and xenophobia has been also a history of the use of science and the actions of scientists in support of these ideas and social movements. In many cases it is clear that science was used merely as raw material or evidence by ideologically interested political actors as proof of preconceived notions." Social Darwinism ... They used this idea to justify the status quo by claiming that the individuals (or groups of individuals) at the top of social, economic, or political hierarchies belonged there, as they had competed against others and had proven themselves best adapted. Any social or political intervention that weakened the existing hierarchy, they claimed, would undermine the natural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This theory suggest that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gesture and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meaning (Dictioinary). In this Paper will discuss the theory of Symbolic interactionism, its three premises that make up the theory, the roles of three major theorist that led to the development of the symbolic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second premise indicates that the meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction between humans. This reminds me of myself as I was growing up. My mother primarily raised me and showed me right from wrong. She taught me religion, not to steal and many essential things in life. Her socialization over time, allowed me to attach meaning to certain things in life. When I see elders I know to respect them, when I see people in need I learned to help. The third premise suggests that these meaning are handled in, and modified through, an interpretative process used by the person in dealing with the things he encounters (Blumer, 1984). This premise simply means that we can all hear the same thing but may interpret them differently from one another. The meaning we attached to things may change over time. In some cases, new experiences, or social interaction may change the way you views things thus giving it different meaning. Many theorist have shown interest in the Symbolic Interaction theory. But there's three theorist that were heavily involved in the development of the concept. Herbert Blumer, George Herbert Mead, and Charles H Cooley were the pioneers that laid the groundwork. Each of the theorist had a distinct view on human group conduct. Despite the differences in views there were many similarities which gave full meaning to the theory. ... Does the way a person is raised change him or her? Throughout the novels of Great Expectations, Snow Falling on Cedars, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the film David Copperfield, change comes in many forms. People mirror the beliefs of those around them. People are obliged to do something they do not want to by those in control of them. In Snow Falling on Cedars, a Japanese–American girl named Hatsue is told by her family all her life to stay away from the "hakujin" (white people). The underlining theme of human nature is evident in Great Expectation by Charles Dickens use of his characters. A main characteristic that Dickens displays is friendship. The friendship between Pip and Herbert is strong. Herbert was significant to Pip's growth in social class and eventual to his revelation. "Friendship was one of the human characteristics Dickens enjoyed...by associating fellowship with good characters and deeds, he made it known that he admires friendship." (Chesterton 199) Pip was the other pawn that Miss Havisham was playing. "But when I fell into the mistake I have so long remained in, at least you lead me on?" said Pip "Yes, I let you on." Miss Havisham replied. (Dickens 334) Miss Havisham convinced Pip to think that Estelle was his soul mate knowing Estella would never return the love. When Magwitch achieves his goal of revenge he does not gain happiness, but rather despair. • 8. Herbert Spencer And Imperialism Herbert Spencer was one of the lead role models and inspirations in the creation of Darwinism. Born April 27th 1820, Spencer spent his childhood living in Derby, Great Britain. His infantile life was depressing, growing up with his uncles who tortured him behind the curtains for 7 years straight. Despite this, the leader philosopher went on to develop ideas and challenged the ideology behind imperialism. Being the creator of the phrase, "survival of the fittest" Herbert weaved his way into Darwin's work being credited for everything. This increased his fame and popularity receiving many followers of his theories. Spencer criticized man theories and tactics used by the government putting holt to imperialism. Herbert Spencer was never a fan of the poor as he wrote multiple scripts explaining. While working with Karl Marx in this area at the time, they found that the reason for the underprivileged being poor was due to the consequences of not having the right skillset or abilities to make the money others were earning. Spencer put this as a quote which became famous later on, "Survival of the fittest". The first thing that was inaccurate about this statement was the fact that Spencer was referring to what was taking place rather than paying no attention to the causes of the issue. It was obvious that the two were not successful in the area receiving multiple discrepancies. • 9. Social Colonialism And Social Darwinism Social Darwinism was a sociological theory that merged Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and the work of Herbert Spencer, Malthus, and other scientific and sociological theorists to justify imperialism, racism, and conservative economic policies. The overall acceptance of the power of nature in defining human beings developed during the 18th century Enlightenment. Europe's exploration not only brought about immense economic and agricultural growth, but also exposed them to "human behavior and life patterns within environments and under circumstances dramatically different than their own" (4). The most popular catch phrases of Darwinism, "struggle for existence" and "survival of the fittest", when applied to the life of man in society, suggested that nature would provide that the best competitors in a competitive situation would win, and that this process would lead to continuing improvement" (6. Hoft). This misinterpreted sense of superiority engulfed much of society at the time and was used to justify the logistics behind certain actions regarding capitalism, racism, and imperialism. Furthermore, it served as the backbone of some of the most heinous acts imaginable including the genocide and sterilization of certain groups of people. Imagine, the year is 2150 and a student is sitting at her desk looking within at latest technology, she thinks about lost poets that history books have shunned for the significance of more famous poets. As a child in modern society, the importance of lesser known poets, such as Thomas Traherne and George Herbert, are considered valuable for their philosophical influence in poetry. Over the course of time literature has become a melting pot of ideas borrowed from other poets and literary works, which are coagulated into one another to make a new idea. People in modern society need to understand the importance of remembrance in the similarities in the backgrounds, metaphysical influences, and written works of Thomas Traherne and George Herbert. It is astonishing how both poets have similar upbringings with almost a 100–year gap between them. The background of Thomas Traherne presented by Richard Firth has stated that "Thomas Traherne was born within the wall of Hereford City in 1637 (page 1)." At the age of five, the British Civil War marched into his town where they beheaded King Charles I. Later that year, Treharne left to attend the Hereford Cathedral School. After graduation, he then attended Brasenose College in Oxford, earning his BA (Bachelor of the Arts) in 1656. During the years of 1657–1660, he wrote his first complete work titled, Select ... In the novel, Pip's life is predestined until he acquires property, showing him the difference between his life and the life he wants to live. Throughout Great Expectations, Charles Dickens emphasizes kindness through friendships with Joe, Biddy, and Herbert by their thoughts and actions to influence Pip in a positive way when confronted with a change of lifestyle. Joe Gargery is Pip's father figure; his first true friend and influence in the novel. The first time Joe shows kindness to Pip is at Christmas dinner when Mr. Pumblechook and other friends of Mrs. Joe tell Pip he is an all around awful child. Joe ... I had never seen anyone then, and I have never seen anyone since, who more strongly expressed to me, in every look and tone, a natural incapacity to do anything secret and mean" (138). Dickens uses this sentence to separate Herbert out from all the other characters Pip has met. Herbert shows kindness naturally and easily toward Pip and it comforts him and influences him to reciprocate the gesture back to him and others. Pip admires the separation in Herbert when he says, "What a hopeful disposition you have!" and Herbert responds by saying, "I ought to have for I have not much else. I must acknowledge, by–the–bye, that the good sense of what I have just said is not my own, but my father's" (195). Herbert is kind enough to give credit to the person who gave him what he owns and not to be dependent on those things. The influence of Herbert's kindness on Pip is greatest because he was there when Pip was transitioning from his past life into his new life of money. Pip's kindness is finally seen when he starts to give money to Herbert in chapter 36 of the novel. Deism rejects the ideas of faith–based and "revealed" religions (those who claim to have received a special revelation from God) such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It also rejects any religious knowledge found in sacred texts such as the Bible and the Quran ("Deism" 94). Instead of having faith and believing that God is in control, Deists only believe in reason and use that as their guide to truth ("Deism" 94). These principles were used by imperialists as a means of justification and proof of their right to colonize land overseas. Social Darwinism is an immoral evil that cannot be ethically justified. To further understand the immorality behind using Social Darwinism and the even greater immorality behind using it as an excuse for overseas expansion, we must understand the origins and foundations of which Social Darwinism is based. He quotes Herbert Spencer when analyzing Spencer's perspective of Social Darwinism. "The prosperity of a species is best supervised when among adults each experiences the good and evil results of his own nature and consequent conduct." Spencer also states "It is much better that the ruminant animal, when deprived by age of the vigor which made its existence a pleasure, should be killed by some beast of the prey, than that it should linger out a life made painful by infirmities, and eventually die of starvation." It is at this point that Spencer begins to cross Darwinism's take on natural selection to social conditions. While Spencer is still speaking in reference of animals, he describes the death of animals as a means of relieving their pain and suffering. This is where Spencer begins to speak in reference to humans. "A sad population of imbeciles would our schemers fill the world with, could their plans last. When innocent polite grateful Pip has his first visit at the Satis House, he is ordered to play cards with Miss Havisham 's lovely adopted daughter Estella. • 22. Charles Darwin, The Most Influential Nineteenth Century... In the 19th century, scientific research progressed rapidly outside the world of industry and technology (McKay 744). British scientist, Charles Darwin, was the most influential nineteenth–century evolutionary thinker. Darwin spent his early career, amassing enormous amounts of biological and geological data from his voyage to South America (Fiero 3). In 1859, he published his classic work, The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, where he summarizes his theory of evolution with the thought of struggle for survival, or natural selection. Furthermore, natural selection is the idea of groups of species surviving through generations by adapting to changes in the environment and using certain characteristics as an advantage. In addition, natural selection challenged traditional ideas about nature and world order, and it was also taken steps further by many thinkers. English philosopher, Herbert Spencer, saw the human race driven forward to ever–greater specialization and progress by a brutal economic struggle that determined the "survival of the fittest" (McKay 745). The notion of a body of thought drawn from the ideas of Charles Darwin that applied the theory of biological evolution to human affairs and saw the human race as driven by an un–ending economic struggle that would determine the survival of the fittest defines Social Darwinism (McKay 745). According to William Graham Sumner, who used The Study of Sociology as a text in the first sociology course offered in an American university, it was Spencer's work which established sociology as a separate, legitimate field in its own right. Spencer's demand that historians present the "natural history of society," in order to furnish data for a comparative sociology, is also credited with inspiring James Harvey Robinson and the others involved in the writing of the New History in the United States. First off, there are a few definitions for gangs because authorities had a hard time explaining what a gang even is. "Walter Miller (1982:313) contrasts gangs with law violating youth groups, which he defines as "an association of three or more youths whose members engage recurrently in illegal activities with the cooperation and moral support of their companions." This definition of law – violating youth groups does not include structure or territory, two important elements of Miller's definition of youth gangs. He developed a useful model of the process by which the self emerges. They are the preparatory stage, the play stage, and the game stage. He explains that the preparatory stage is when children imitate people around them (especially family members who the continuously interact with). Monkey see monkey do. As they grow older children will become more adept at using symbols like gestures and words that form the basis of communication. By interacting with relatives and friends and watching cartoons on television and also looking at picture books, children will begin to understand symbols and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We learned about many miraculous theorists such as Karl Marx, Auguste Comete, Herb Spencer, Emile Durkheim and many more theorists. I will present what I have learned by comparing and contrasting George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley. This paper will examine what both of these great theorists studied, some of their background info and theory. George Herbert Mead George Herbert Mead was born on February 27, 1863 in South Hadley Massachusetts and he died April 26, 1931 in Chicago Illinois. He felt social acts that are affected on the unself– conscious and the self– conscious level. Unself– conscious/ non–significant gestures are like animalistic responses. Self– conscious/ significant gestures are most human intercourse. Mead work focused more on Self– conscious/ significant gestures, these gestures require thought and requires taking on the role of the other in order to predict the appropriate response. He said human thought rises when there are symbols that stimulate in the individual a response. According the slides on Mead, Symbolic interaction requires interpretation or understanding the meaning of the actions or remarks of the other person. It also requires definition or indicating to another how he is to act. This means communication with others and understanding it can lead to self–conscious adjustments to us. Also spoke about Consciousness and how thoughts rise in the dynamic relationship between a person and his environment and in what manner Consciousness is not a given; it's emergent. THE GENESIS OF THE SELF Mead theory of The Genesis Of The Self is my favorite work of Mead and it basically explains how the self develops out of the growing ability in childhood to take the role of the other. Mead clarifies how children develop this skill through playing and how child play at the level of simple role–taking is the first stage. Then it sets up for the next stage which is ... • 33. The Importance Of Greed In Great Expectations By Charles... In life, fortunes are won and lost. Both enemies and friends are made and destroyed. People often say that fortunes impact relationships, but that is not true. The novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, proves the inaccuracy of that statement. It is not wealth that annihilates true friendships, but the greed of man and how he acts in his immaturity. Even though it may seem that wealth affects relationships on the surface, once you begin to look into it you find that these relationships are not true at all. In fact, wealth has no control over true friendship in the least. These points are all demonstrated in Great Expectations. In the first place, it is proven that greed, not wealth, destroys any harmony a person enjoys with another. In Great Expectations, Pip (the main character) quickly and greedily accedes to leave his home and best friend for possible wealth. His friend and protector, Joe, doesn't want him to leave but Pip doesn't even notice. Dickens writes, "But I [Pip] encouraged Joe at the time. I was lost in the mazes of my future fortunes, and could not retrace the by–paths we had trodden together" (pg. 110). Pip's greed makes him blind to Joe's sorrow and ruins their close companionship. If Pip wasn't so selfish, he would have completely ignored the option to leave behind his loved ones and would have found a much better companion in Joe. Greed, not wealth, terminated that relationship in the book and can ruin many others in life. Not only does greed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Different Qualities of a Gentleman Portrayed by Charles Dickens in Great Expectations In this essay I will be looking at how the different qualities of a 'gentleman' is portrayed, by Charles Dickens, throughout "Great Expectations". In the beginning of the story a 'gentleman' is seen, through Pip, as someone with wealth, education and high social status. This materialistic definition of a gentleman can be seen in the description of the character Bentley Drummle, who clearly isn't a gentleman, "… he was idle, proud, niggardly, reserved and suspicious. He came of rich people down in Somersetshire, who had nursed this combination of qualities until they made the discovery that it was just of age ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To pip being a 'gentleman' also meant that you had to be respected and when he 'becomes a gentleman' he is treated respectfully by Trabb when goes to buy clothes when before he wasn't even looked at. Magwitch's view of a 'gentleman' is someone who can be made using money. From the reaction Pip receives from society, Magwitch believes he has made a 'gentleman' out of Pip. Herbert, a 'true gentleman' in the novel, is regarded throughout the story by pip as a 'gentleman'. First it was because of his class and his manners during the fight. Also for the fact that he decided to marry Clara to relieve her from taking care of her drunk father. Herbert's overwhelming politeness and patience is particularly contrasted to Pip's increasing rudeness and bad behaviour when Joe comes to stay. Herbert treats him better than Pip himself. The fact that Hebert is a 'gentleman' is surprising as his mother especially is rude and lazy while his uncles and aunts are all money–grabbing and attempt to please Miss Havisham for her money although they have no real love for her. Another 'true gentleman' is Joe, although he lacks the materialistic appearance of a 'gentleman', we can see through his actions and words that he is a 'true gentleman'. ... By observing this theory, readers can understand that the oppression and stereotypes that face African American women are mostly learned through communication. For instance, the idea that women should take care of a child are exchanged through conversation like: "When you will be old, you will have children," or just the fact that often parents will buy baby doll for their girl suggesting that one day she will have a to take care of a baby. For African American people, they can learn through conversation a lot of stereotypes about the African American (new racism discourse). For example, someone will ask "where are you from," while this person is born in America, but because he has darker skin color, people through communication makes them feel like they are "different" physically. So, trough interactions, this person will associate their identity with the conversation they had and the social stereotypes they learned. This is associated to intersectionality, because African American women will learn their identity with the perception of the society on gender and ethnicity (Wood, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. What Is The Root Of Social Darwinism "The survival of the fittest"– the root of Social Darwinism. Charles Darwin, who was a naturalist ruled out that an adaptable species would only survive and reproduce. The concept is the same in Social Darwinism, but was not introduced by Darwin. Social Darwinists such as Herbert Spencer and William Sumner claimed that in a society, only the wealthiest and powerful survives in contrast with the poor and impotent. This applies especially to the people living under Laissez–faire capitalism in which the government does not control the business. Andrew Carnegie's 'gospel of wealth' contradicted with the common believes of Social Darwinism. Andrew proposed that the wealthy should distribute their wealth to level up the discrepancy between people. Spencer, Sumner, the famous Darwinists advocated that life of a human was a struggle for existence, where only the best thrives. Human life was basically contrasted with organisms. Darwinists held belief that the wealthy will have more independence, basic needs, and sophisticated living, and the poor left out to die. Book Review of 'Great Expectations' Great Expectations Introduction In his novel Great Expectations, published in1861, Charles Dickens examines the class system of Victorian England and the effect wealth and position had on the lives of the people living during the period. The novel follows the life of Philip Pirrip (Pip) from his childhood as an orphan being raise by Joe Gargery (his brother–in–law) and his sister (simply known as Mrs. Joe in the novel). The story concerns Pip's efforts to become a gentleman and win the affections of Estella, the adopted daughter of Miss Havisham a lady of means. This paper will explore the effects wealth and money had on Pip, Miss Havisham and Joe. Throughout the novel the actions of these characters demonstrate the values of loyalty, affection, and benevolence is more important than wealth and class. Discussion The protagonist of the novel, Pip, is deeply driven to better his position in life and marry Estella. Toward this end he disassociates himself from the people who care about him the most because he is embarrassed by their course dress and manners. Pip was mortified to learn that Joe, who was a blacksmith from the working class and had taken him in when he was orphaned, was coming to London to visit him while he was learning to be a gentleman, "If I could have kept him away by paying money, I certainly would have paid money" (209). • 40. Essay on Charles Dickens' Great Expectations Great Expectations' main character, Phillip Pirrip– generally known as Pip– had a rough upbringing as a child. His sister, Mrs. Joe had "brought him up by hand", after their parents and five brothers had all been laid to rest many years ago. Another character, Herbert Pocket experienced a bizarre childhood, though in a different manner. Charles Dickens' Great Expectations develops through the novel following Pip, a young "common boy" who grew up in the countryside. As he matured so did his love for a girl of higher class, Estella. Estella also is a victim to her guardian in the novel. She too is never given the chance to be her own person and live life to its fullest. Estella is conditioned by her guardian, Miss Havisham, to make men suffer, and in return it is Estella who will be made to suffer for her guardian's actions. Miss Havisham is a severely disturbed old woman who has adopted Estella. Miss Havisham was abandoned on her wedding day and as a result she forever maintains hatred toward men. Thus for her dirty work, Miss Havisham uses Estella to meet this purpose. Pip concludes that Miss Havisham "had done a grievous thing in taking an impressionable child (Estella) and had manipulated into the form that her wild resentment, spurned affection, and wounded pride, found vengeance in". Miss Havisham makes Estella have a fear of men being close to her and not to allow herself to become attached to them emotionally. Herbert was born wealthy so in his state of mind it is casual to have exceptional amount of money. The income that Herbert receives is good enough for him and even exceeds his expectation. He feels that money does bring happiness into his life, but money is not necessary to be happy. In Pip's' perspective, money is a pathway to greatness and is necessary in order to obtain a sense of happiness. As soon as Pip was able to get his hand on money, he took advantage of it which caused him to experience debt. In Chapter 39 the author states, "He was a convict, a few year ago, and is a ignorant common fellow now, for all he's lucky,' what do I say? "Survival of the fittest was a phrase that originated from Darwinian evolutionary theory, as a way of describing the mechanism of natural selection. The biological concept of fitness is defined as reproductive success. In Darwinian terms the phrase is the best understood as "Survival of the form that will leave the most copies of itself in successive generations. Herbert Spencer first used the phrase, after reading Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, in his Principles of biology 1864, in which he drew parallels between his own economic theories and Darwin's biological ones:" This survival of the fittest, which I have here sought to express in mechanical terms, was that which ...
