Symbolic Interaction Perspective There are several sociological perspectives including functionalism, conflict, social exchange, and sociological
imagination. The one that will be talked about within this paper is called symbolic interaction. Symbolic interaction does not focus on social structure
like other sociological perspectives do, symbolic interaction is based on small, mostly person to person ideas and perspectives on what symbols mean

Social groups act differently amongst themselves versus as a whole within a societal environment. Someone within a certain social group may feel
importance, power and control. Within the subgroups, individuals define themselves and their place in society. They sometimes hope to influence
others to partake in their society and their norms. Symbolic interaction theory describes the family as a unit of interacting personalities and focuses
attention on the way people interact through symbols. One example of this theory is gang members. Gang members act as a family in their own
society and there are certain words, gestures, rules and roles that they abide to in this man made society. Some of the norms that are in this created
society might be understood when a person steps out into regular society, because we have different norms and roles. When someone steps into our
society, they might feel discomfort, have no sense of self, or may even turn to violence because they are dysfunctional because they have been
immersed in their society for so long and cannot easily adapt to the outside world. If a gang member throws up a gesture that is common in there sub

Social Darwinism was a sociological theory popular in late nineteenth–century Europe and the United States. It merged Charles Darwin's theory of
natural selection and Herbert Spencer's sociological theories to justify imperialism, racism, and laissez–faire (conservative) social and economic

The second premise indicates that the meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction between humans. This reminds me
of myself as I was growing up. My mother primarily raised me and showed me right from wrong. She taught me religion, not to steal and many
essential things in life. Her socialization over time, allowed me to attach meaning to certain things in life. When I see elders I know to respect them,
when I see people in need I learned to help. The third premise suggests that these meaning are handled in, and modified through, an interpretative
process used by the person in dealing with the things he encounters (Blumer, 1984). This premise simply means that we can all hear the same thing but
may interpret them differently from one another. The meaning we attached to things may change over time. In some cases, new experiences, or social
interaction may change the way you views things thus giving it different meaning. Many theorist have shown interest in the Symbolic Interaction
theory. But there's three theorist that were heavily involved in the development of the concept. Herbert Blumer, George Herbert Mead, and Charles H
Cooley were the pioneers that laid the groundwork. Each of the theorist had a distinct view on human group conduct. Despite the differences in views

Clara looks for someone to help her take care of David and comes across Mr. Murdstone, an evil, cruel, and cold–hearted man. He ends up giving Clara
no control over her own life. When David's mother sends David off to boarding school even though she did not wish to do so, she did it anyway

Great Expectations Human nature is the psychological and social qualities that characterize humankind. Human nature separates humans from the rest

Herbert Spencer was one of the lead role models and inspirations in the creation of Darwinism. Born April 27th 1820, Spencer spent his childhood
living in Derby, Great Britain. His infantile life was depressing, growing up with his uncles who tortured him behind the curtains for 7 years
straight. Despite this, the leader philosopher went on to develop ideas and challenged the ideology behind imperialism. Being the creator of the
phrase, "survival of the fittest" Herbert weaved his way into Darwin's work being credited for everything. This increased his fame and popularity
receiving many followers of his theories. Spencer criticized man theories and tactics used by the government putting holt to imperialism. Herbert
Spencer was never a fan of the poor as he wrote multiple scripts explaining. While working with Karl Marx in this area at the time, they found that
the reason for the underprivileged being poor was due to the consequences of not having the right skillset or abilities to make the money others were

Social Darwinism was a sociological theory that merged Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and the work of Herbert Spencer, Malthus, and
other scientific and sociological theorists to justify imperialism, racism, and conservative economic policies. The overall acceptance of the power of
nature in defining human beings developed during the 18th century Enlightenment. Europe's exploration not only brought about immense economic
and agricultural growth, but also exposed them to "human behavior and life patterns within environments and under circumstances dramatically

Twelve–year–old Charles dickens gets ready for bed after a long day at the blacking house. These Victorian–aged memories will provide him with
many ideas for his highly acclaimed novel Great Expectations. Set in 1830 England, Great Expectations is a coming–of–age story about a common
innocent boy named Pip and his road to becoming a gentleman through the influence of others. Pip is influenced both positively and negatively by
Estella, Herbert, and Magwitch.
Estella left a huge impression on Pip and one of the biggest personality changes he went through, was how self–conscious he became. When innocent
polite grateful Pip has his first visit at the Satis House, he is ordered to play cards with Miss Havisham 's lovely adopted daughter Estella. All seems to
go well until she begins to call him out on his appearance and dialect. " 'He calls knaves, jacks this boy! ' said Estella with disdain before our first
game out. 'And what coarse hands he has and what thick boots ! '" (Dickens, 60). Once Estella starts to remark on how "common" Pip was, he
immediately begins to become more self aware. He soon becomes ashamed of his class and his "common" friend Joe, essentially dedicating his life to
being a gentleman to get his "dream girl". Not only did Estella make Pip feel self conscious just at the Satis House, but she ultimately scarred him and
left him feeling unhappy about his "commonness" all throughout his younger years.

Personal Response– So far I really enjoy the book. Charles Dickens really pulls me into the book. He uses great figurative language that makes you
feel sorry for a character. The people in this book seem so innocent and harmless. Well, except the guy that threatened Pip. They all also seem to live
hard lives. They don't have all the benefits that we have today. They have to scrounge around for stuff we never would have to scrounge around for.
What is really neat about it, is that they get an enjoyment out of life. They are not well off either. I can't wait to read on further into Charles Dickens

Vocabulary– So far in this novel there is no vocabulary that really comes to mind. I though I would use this section to talk about figurative
language. Charles Dickens uses a lot of figurative language. He says that when Pip goes up into his room, he is in the dark. Literally that means he

This paper discussed the life of Herbert Spencer (Spencer) and his contributions to the field of Sociology found from print (textbook) and non–print
sources (online). Each article touched base on Spencer's life, but each described it differently. Over all, the article discussed how Spencer was
homeschooled and raised by his father and uncle (Delaney, 2003) and how he was the founder of social Darwinism and how he "coined the term
'survival of the fittest,'" (Ferris, K., & Stein, J., 2014, p. 21). Spencer's major books that he has written are in this paper as well. This paper also
discusses how my own personal thoughts were awakened by his theoretical concept of social Darwinism.

Great Expectations By Charles Dicken
In Charles Dicken's novel Great Expectations there is a wide diverse cast of characters who play different significant roles that affect the character
development of Pip. One of the unsung heroes throughout the book, that's role can be often overlooked is Herbert Pocket. At first glance, it can
seem as if Herbert does not have as much of an influence on Pip as he tends to blend into the background, along with the fact that at different points
can compare to other minor characters that only show up when they are needed to help move the plot along. Herbert stands out from this crowd
due to different factors in his relationship with Pip, and how this association allows him to be able to affect and help mold Pip's character. This
close bond began with Pip's first experience with how a gentleman would react in different circumstances that he uses as an expectation as he takes

ultimately directs Pip's decision on whatever topic he went to Herbert asking for help on. Herbert never fails to come to Pip's aid, proving his
trustworthiness, always doing so with a cheery attitude that Pip later reflects upon how it influence over him and others as well. This further engraves

In life, fortunes are won and lost. Both enemies and friends are made and destroyed. People often say that fortunes impact relationships, but that is not
true. The novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, proves the inaccuracy of that statement. It is not wealth that annihilates true friendships, but
the greed of man and how he acts in his immaturity. Even though it may seem that wealth affects relationships on the surface, once you begin to look
into it you find that these relationships are not true at all. In fact, wealth has no control over true friendship in the least. These points are all

politeness and patience is particularly contrasted to Pip's increasing rudeness and bad behaviour when Joe comes to stay. Herbert treats him better than
Pip himself. The fact that Hebert is a 'gentleman' is surprising as his mother especially is rude and lazy while his uncles and aunts are all
money–grabbing and attempt to please Miss Havisham for her money although they have no real love for her.
Another 'true gentleman' is Joe, although he lacks the materialistic appearance of a 'gentleman', we can see through his actions and words that he is a

Relationship Between Wealth And Happiness
Does wealth equal happiness?
According to the novel Great Expectation by Charles Dickens, the correlation between wealth and happiness is debatable, depending on the person
and their lifestyle. For example, Herbet viewed money as a blessing but not something that necessarily brings him happiness; however, for Pip he can
never have enough money and it is his idea of happiness. Herbert was born wealthy so in his state of mind it is casual to have exceptional amount of
money. When Pip transform to a gentleman and went from being poor to wealthy, he suddenly wants things he never wanted before. With Pip being

The perspective of money varies for both Herbert and Pip. The income that Herbert receives is good enough for him and even exceeds his
expectation. He feels that money does bring happiness into his life, but money is not necessary to be happy. In Pip's' perspective, money is a
pathway to greatness and is necessary in order to obtain a sense of happiness. As soon as Pip was able to get his hand on money, he took advantage
of it which caused him to experience debt. In Chapter 39 the author states, "He was a convict, a few year ago, and is a ignorant common fellow
now, for all he's lucky,' what do I say? I says to myself, 'If I ain't a gentleman, nor yet ain't got no learning, I'm the owner of such. All of you owns
stock and land; which on you owns a brought–up London gentleman?"(Dickens 78). In this scene, it portrays Magwitch to be very giving with his
money since he is Pip's' benefactor. Magwitch is giving him his money to Pip because he feel bad of what happened in the past, Pip gave his food to
Magwitch. However, Magwitch actually tries to use his money to buy the status of a "gentleman", where Pip understands that money can never
