Running head: HYPOTHESIS TEST 1 HYPOTHESIS TESTING 7 Project Phase 3 – Scenario 2 Author Note This paper is being submitted on Explain the 8 Steps in hypothesis testing. 1. State null hypothesis- this is the opposite of the expected results, the importance of stating the null hypothesis is because according to Karl Popper’s principle or Falsifiabilty, it not possible to exclusively confirm a hypothesis but it is possible to conclusively negate a hypothesis. 2. Alternative hypothesis- this is indication of what the experiment expects. It is stated as not all equal, because despite the fact that it is possible to have not all equal variables it is only one of the many chances. For instance, when comparing effect of infectious disease of the colour of urine the alternative hypothesis can state that disease 1 results in tinting of the colour of urine to yellow but disease 2, 3… and normal un-infected persons do not differ in the colour of urine. 3. Set α- this is the level of significance. This is the probability or chance of committing the ‘grievous’ error type one denoted by α There are two types of errors; Reality decision H0 is correct H0 in incorrect Accept H0 OK Type 2 error which is the β equal to possibility of type 2 error. H0 rejected Type 1 error α=possibility of type 1 error OK 4. Data collection- it’s important to use valid data collection techniques possibly for this case use observational or experimental methods 5. Stating and calculating the statistics for the study- this are the statistic values tested which include the mean, population, sample proportion and the difference in mean and sample proportions. mean 61.82 median 61.50 mode 69.50 Mid-range 58 range 41 variance 79.64 Standard deviation 8.3 6. Decide on the test to be used- there are basically two types of tests; one tailed and two tailed. The decision is reached depending on the spread of error; two tailed is used when error spread is on two extremes side while one tailed test is used when error is spread on one side in the distribution. 7. Create accept and reject regions- a critical F value is established, you can establish the study F value from the statistical tables it is also called the Fα. It represent the minimum value for the study test statistics which determine which values should be rejected. With the value of F you locate it in the F distribution which form the location for boundary for acceptance and rejection. 8. Standardize the test statistics to draw a conclusion- using step 5 and 6 you can make some inference on the study, but to make more specific conclusion computation of z-test will help decide on the whether to reject or accept the hypothesis. In such cases p-value lower then α, then null hypothesis H0 is conclusively negated and therefore should accept the alternative hypothesis HA. In testing a hypothesis using the above eight steps I prefer using critical value. This method include the coming up with the unlik ...

Hypothesis Testing Definitions: A statistical hypothesis is a guess about a population parameter. The guess may or not be true. The null hypothesis, written H0, is a statistical hypothesis that states that there is no difference between a parameter and a specific value, or that there is no difference between two parameters. The alternative hypothesis, written H1 or HA, is a statistical hypothesis that specifies a specific difference between a parameter and a specific value, or that there is a difference between two parameters. Example 1: A medical researcher is interested in finding out whether a new medication will have undesirable side effects. She is particularly concerned with the pulse rate of patients who take the medication. The research question is, will the pulse rate increase, decrease, or remain the same after a patient takes the medication? Since the researcher knows that the mean pulse rate for the population under study is 82 beats per minute, the hypotheses for this study are: H0: µ = 82 HA: µ ≠ 82 The null hypothesis specifies that the mean will remain unchanged and the alternative hypothesis states that it will be different. This test is called a two-tailed test since the possible side effects could be to raise or lower the pulse rate. Notice that this is a non directional hypothesis. The rejection region lies in both tails. We divide the alpha in two and place half in each tail. Example 2: An entrepreneur invents an additive to increase the life of an automobile battery. If the mean lifetime of the automobile battery is 36 months, then his hypotheses are: H0: µ ≤ 36 HA: µ > 36 Here, the entrepreneur is only interested in increasing the lifetime of the batteries, so his alternative hypothesis is that the mean is greater than 36 months. The null hypothesis is that the mean is less than or equal to 36 months. This test is one-tailed since the interest is only in an increased lifetime. Notice that the direction of the inequality in the alternate hypothesis points to the right, same as the area of the curve that forms the rejection region. Example 3: A landlord who wants to lower heating bills in a large apartment complex is considering using a new type of insulation. If the current average of the monthly heating bills is $78, his hypotheses about heating costs with the new insulation are: H0: µ ≥ 78 HA: µ < 78 This test is also a one-tailed test since the landlord is interested only in lowering heating costs. Notice that the direction of the inequality in the alternate hypothesis points to the left, same as the area of the curve that forms the rejection region. Study Design: After stating the hypotheses, the researcher’s next step is to design the study. In designing the study, the researcher selects an appropriate statistical test, chooses a level of significance, and formulates a plan for conducting the study..

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
