TOPIC: MEANING, OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF
EDUCATIONALTECHNOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
Educational technology is most simply and comfortably defined as an array of tools that might prove
helpful in advancing student learning. Educational technology relies on abroad definition of the word
‘technology’. Educational technologists make significant contributions to the development and organizational
embedding of such environments. Their emerging role is complex as it requires current knowledge and skills in
learning, teaching, and management and information technology. Educational technology is concerned with the
overall effectiveness and efficient functioning of the educational system.
MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Educational Technology explains that how the educational process can be improved. Educational
Technology is a system of 5M’s. Educational Technology is a system in education in which machines,
materials, media, men and methods are interrelated and work together for the fulfillment of specific educational
objectives. Educational Technology is an applied or practical study which aims at maximizing educational
effects by controlling such relevant factors as educational purposes, educational content, teaching materials,
educational environment, conduct of students, behavior of instructor and interrelations between students and
instructors. It is a branch of study in which the results of engineering techniques, information science, natural
sciences and human technology are to be used to promote the efficiency of education.
SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. Its scope ranges from the concrete
educational process to the most abstract and subtle ones. It includes the use of hardware and software and
systems analysis in various educational operations. The three major areas in education in which its scope is very
wide. These are;
a) Technology related to general education administration and management.
b) Technology related to general educational testing.
c) Technology related to the instructional process.
Rowntra (1973) has started the following as the province of educational technologists.
a) Identifying aims and objectives of learning.
b) Planning the learning environment.
c) Exploring and structuring the subject matter.
d) Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media.
e) Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning system.
f) Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their effectiveness for the future.
Important areas which should comprise educational technology are as under:
a) Concept and various facts of educational technology.
b) Teaching - learning process.
c) Individualized instructional technology.
d) Programmed learning.
e) Teaching models.
f) Learning theories.
g) Multimedia approach to teaching.
h) Mathematics.
i) Cybernetics.
j) Task analysis.
k) Modules.
l) Systems approach.
MACROLEVEL OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONALTECHNOLOGY[Objectives in

CONCLUSION
Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving
performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. The term
educational technology is often associated with instructional and learning theory. Educational technology makes
the educational process systematic and scientific. It has provided a scientific foundation to educational process.
It makes teaching, learning and training scientific, objective, simple and interesting. Educational technology
applies the products of science, scientific theory and principles and discoveries to strengthen the process and
organization of education.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION Educational technology is most simply and comfortably defined as an array of tools that might prove helpful in advancing student learning. Educational technology relies on abroad definition of the word ‘technology’. Educational technologists make significant contributions to the development and organizational embedding of such environments. Their emerging role is complex as it requires current knowledge and skills in learning, teaching, and management and information technology. Educational technology is concerned with the overall effectiveness and efficient functioning of the educational system.
  • 4. MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Educational Technology explains that how the educational process can be improved. Educational Technology is a system of 5M’s. Educational Technology is a system in education in which machines, materials, media, men and methods are interrelated and work together for the fulfillment of specific educational objectives. Educational Technology is an applied or practical study which aims at maximizing educational effects by controlling such relevant factors as educational purposes, educational content, teaching materials, educational environment, conduct of students, behavior of instructor and interrelations between students and instructors. It is a branch of study in which the results of engineering techniques, information science, natural sciences and human technology are to be used to promote the efficiency of education.
  • 5. SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. Its scope ranges from the concrete educational process to the most abstract and subtle ones. It includes the use of hardware and software and systems analysis in various educational operations. The three major areas in education in which its scope is very wide. These are; a) Technology related to general education administration and management. b) Technology related to general educational testing. c) Technology related to the instructional process. Rowntra (1973) has started the following as the province of educational technologists. a) Identifying aims and objectives of learning. b) Planning the learning environment. c) Exploring and structuring the subject matter. d) Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media. e) Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning system. f) Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their effectiveness for the future. Important areas which should comprise educational technology are as under: a) Concept and various facts of educational technology. b) Teaching - learning process. c) Individualized instructional technology. d) Programmed learning. e) Teaching models. f) Learning theories. g) Multimedia approach to teaching. h) Mathematics. i) Cybernetics. j) Task analysis. k) Modules. l) Systems approach.

CONCLUSION Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. The term educational technology is often associated with instructional and learning theory. Educational technology makes the educational process systematic and scientific. It has provided a scientific foundation to educational process. It makes teaching, learning and training scientific, objective, simple and interesting. Educational technology applies the products of science, scientific theory and principles and discoveries to strengthen the process and organization of education.
