3. INTRODUCTION
Educational Technology is concerned with the
development, application, and evaluation of system, techniques and
aids to improve the process of human learning. It could be conceived
as a science of techniques, methods and media by which educational
goals could be realised.
Educational technology is seen both as a means as well
as service to effect and facilitate better and more productive learning
systems. It may be defined as a separate field in the theory of education
dealing with the development and application of the use of educational
resources.
4. EXPLANATION
Meaning of educational technology
Educational technology a system of 5 M’s. Educational
technology is a system in education in which machines, materials,
media, men and methods are interrelated and work together for the
fulfilment of specific educational objectives. ‘Technology explosion’
has yielded several new machines, materials and media which have
great potential for use in the educational enterprise. An adequate
knowledge of theory and practices of educational technology and their
proper use would enable the teacher to understand and effectively
discharge his new roles in the educational system in an age of
information explosion, knowledge explosion, population explosion and
expectation explosion.
Objectives of educational technology
General objectives of educational technology
Hillard Jason has stated the following major objectives of
educational technology:
1. Transmitting information,
2. Serving as role methods,
3. Assisting the practice of specific skills, and
4. Contributing to the provision of feedback.
Mackenzie and others describe the following four main
objectives of educational technology:
i. The need to reach more students,
5. ii. To reach them with an improved range of learning
materials,
iii. To offer greater opportunities for independent study, and
iv. To permit at least a limited student response.
Macro level objectives of educational technology (Objectives in
terms of broad educational goals)
1. Identification of educational needs and aspirations of the
community.
2. Determination of the aims ofeducation, broad strategies and
structure of education.
3. Developing a suitable curriculum with interaction of arts,
human values and sciences.
4. Identification of man- material resources and strategies for
achieving the desired aims of education.
5. Developing certain models leading to improvement in the
process of teaching- learning.
6. Identification of major constraints in the environment and
the ways means of tackling them.
7. Assisting in extending vocational opportunities in masses
especially neglected sectors of society.
8. Managing the entire educational system covering planning,
implementation and evaluation phases.
Micro- level objectives of educational technology (objectives in
terms of specific class-room teaching)
1. Identifying and analysing the characteristics and
educational needs of the students.
2. Determining the specific class- room objectives and stating
them in behavioural terms.
3. Analysing the contents of instruction and organising them
in proper sequence.
6. 4. Identifying the nature of the interaction of the subsystems
like students, teachers, teaching-learning material, content
of instruction and methodologies.
5. Evaluating the effectiveness of the class room teaching in
terms of the student’s performance or change in behaviour.
6. Identifying the available teaching learning material and
resources.
7. Providing appropriate feedback to the students as well as
teachers to bring modification in the teaching learning
process.
Scope of educational technology
Scope of educational technology is as wide as education
itself. Its scope ranges from the concrete educational process to the
most abstract and subtle ones. It includes the use of hardware and
software and systems analysis in various educational operations. The
possibility of using educational technology in almost all areas of
education has been in education in which its scope is very wide. These
are:
i. Technology related to general educational administration and
management.
ii. Technology related to general educational testing.
iii. Technology related to the instructional process.
Rowntra (1973) has stated the following as the province of
educational technologists:
a. Identifying aims and objectives of learning
b. Planning the learning environment.
c. Exploring and structuring the subject matter.
d. Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media.
e. Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning system.
7. f. Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their
effectiveness for the future.
8. CONCLUSION
Simply stated, educational technology is
the application of the results of researchers and studies material or non-
material to improve teaching and learning. It must be viewed in relation
to teaching as a whole into the learning process. Teachers must be
understanding this relationship in order to be able to make intelligent
or fruitful use of technological aids.
