Examples Of Sameness In The Giver
Would you want to live in a world where there is no choice and mild feelings? Can you imagine a
world where everything is decided for you, and you are irrelevant? This is the way that the
community in The Giver is run; it is called sameness. Sameness is not a good way to live, because
you can learn from your mistakes, difference can be a good thing, and there is no reason to live
without choice. One reason Sameness is not a good way to live is that with sameness people cannot
make any bad decisions. When people make bad decisions you learn from them, and they can help
them make better decisions in the future. One example from The Giver is when Jonas takes the
apple and the speaker called him out on, after that he never took an apple again. There are not
enough opportunities for small choices with small consequences with sameness. When someone
experiences consequences or embarrassment they are less likely to do something causing
consequences again. If they learn to make good choices with small decisions, they are more likely to
make good choices the first time with big decisions. However this is not possible with sameness,
and this is one reason sameness is bad. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example from The Giver is that Jonas enjoys the colors of the flowers, and the colors Gabe has.
Also, without differences the world is boring. With sameness everyone that you knew looked
exactly the same, and lived the exact same way. That is the way sameness works in Jonas'
community. There needs to be some difference partly because different types of people need
different living conditions. It is not a good idea to make people live under that many restrictions,
because they will not be able to have any fun. These are all reasons difference can be a good thing,
and taking it away would be

The Little Things
When you're not paying close attention to all of the good things that can happen to you throughout
the day, you don't really notice how many small things there are that can have a positive effect.
Small things on their own aren't much, but when you start to add them up they can become
something huge. For instance, playing fetch with my Labrador Buddy, or giving in to that craving of
chocolate and enjoying every bite are very small things in the grand scheme of things, but take
either out of my life and it would be a tragedy. Every once in a while something happens that is
clearly a big good thing, but they don't happen often enough to really get you through that daily
grind. For instance, my mom recently celebrated her 70th birthday ... Show more content on

These are things that are small on the surface, but if they went away they would be pretty big. If
suddenly you have a health scare and are hanging on to your life, something like having a good meal
would seem pretty huge. If somebody you loved were to die, suddenly those hugs that you used to
share with them every day would linger over you and the lack of their presence would be one of the
saddest things in your life. The small things are really the big things because they reflect what truly
matters to you. I have a very busy life and not everyday do I think about and appreciate having a
simple phone conversation with a friend, getting a much–needed hug from my boyfriend, or even
just spending time with my niece, but these are the things that would feel crippling if they went
away. By doing this experiment I learned that people generally focus too much on the negative
things in the world and end up making themselves feel like victims. And they don't pay enough
attention to the little things in the world that add up to make for a life that's worth living. People
love to recall all of the bad things that happen to them throughout the day, but really things don't
happen to people, things just happen. There are probably an equal amount of good things and bad
things, so the trick to getting through life and making yourself happy is to control how you respond
to the world. If you focus on the bad and

A Small Good Thing By Raymond Carver And The Birthmark Essay
A Small Birthmark with Vampiric Communion In the stories "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond
Carver and "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are obvious differences between the two
tales. While "A Small Good Thing" has to do with a family dealing with the injury and then loss of
their "The Birthmark" is a scientific quest to remove a birthmark. The analysis of these two stories
show both similarities as well as the differences between the main themes of Vampirism,
Communion. These two main themes come from How to Read Literature like a Professor by
Thomas C. Foster. Foster describes Vampirism as not only true vampires but the idea and concepts
included with them. These concepts vary from parasitic ideals to how vampires can be as old as
time. The other main theme is Communion which by definition is the sharing of food or drink.
Foster connects communion to having a bond or event take place during a meals which can be either
good or bad. The main themes of Vampirism and Communion in "A Small Good Thing" and "The
Birthmark" have both commonalities as well as variances that perfectly reflect the ideas representing
in Fosters book.
In the two stories, "A Small Good Thing" and "The Birthmark", vampirism be used to describe the
tales as an overarching theme. While vampirism is an overarching theme, this does not mean that
any vampires are in the stories. Vampirism as a theme rather explains ideas that can be associated
with vampires. In the tale of "The Birthmark" vampirism

Who Is The Narrator In A Small Good Thing
1 – Carver elicits the reader's sympathy in this story by presenting the reader with a slow–moving
although intense narration of a boy's death whose parents are stricken with grief and panic.
2 – The baker would be simply described as a man who is focused on doing his job. Moreover, he is
unexpectedly incorporated into a conflict in which he did not attend, rather his intents were more
habitual. It is up to the reader to realize that the baker has a life of his own, as he bakes for money in
which he must require to survive. He keeps calling for, indubitably, that reason alone–he wants his
money. My impression of him definitely changed as I rather hated him in the beginning, but at the
end I realized I was fantastically mislead and respected him. It was quite touching.
3 – The doctor, Dr. Francis, was presented as a seemingly suspicious character through context. He
was quite well–intended as he hoped to reassure the parents that everything was fine–he ... Show

In the beginning, as his wife orders a cake for her son, she does not notify her husband of her
doings. Consequently, after the son was in the hospital the father went home and a telephone call
inquired about a sixteen–dollar cake, but he had no inkling to what he was talking about.
Indubitably, this put the parents in a much worse spot than they would have been without the
mysterious phone caller riling them up all the time. This concern is also shown with the baker as
when the mother orders the cake in the beginning, they limit communication to an absolute
minimum. This leads the parents to assume a bad nature of him after they realize he was the caller
the entire time. It seems though much of the anger in the story could have been avoided with a little
more communication, and so was Raymond Carver's

What Is The Dismissive Way In 'When Doctors Need To Lie'
Doctor's were taught how to tend to their patients, not their surrogates which is why surrogates are
usually dismissed or neglected. In the narrative "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond Carver, this
idea is further supported when we look at the real world research in done in What Doctor Know
About How Bad It Is and Won't Say It" by Paula Span and "When Doctors Need to Lie" by Sandeep
Jauhar. When looking at the stories "A Small Good Thing","What Doctor Know About How Bad It
Is and Won't Say It" and "When Doctors Need to Lie" by Sandeep Jauhar, we realized that the
dismissive way in which the Weisses are treated by the hospital staff is caused by the doctors not

If the doctors were to tell the surrogates that truth in severe situations the family can better prepare
for the consequences, but they will lose faith in the doctors' work. The doctors are very hesitant and
dubious to address the patients' families. In the text "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond Carver
there could have been alternative ending that was better for the Weisses. If they had known
beforehand while their son was being operated on, they would have been able to handle the situation
better. They would have been semi emotionally prepared for a life without their son. At the end of
the novel they were told all the information that has been withheld since they entered the hospital.
The information was just piled on and before they had time to process they had to leave. If the
Weisses were given accurate and detailed information from the start the situation would have been
better to handle. Therefore, the doctors would not have had to carry the burden of information all by
themselves or had to take on the guilt of the son's death. In the novel, it says the death of the son
could have been prevented if the doctors had been more informed about the son's condition. If the
doctors and the Weisses had an honest

Human Connection In A Small Good Thing By Raymond Carver
A Small Good Thing Human communication and connection is a vital part of society. People need to
stay connected throughout life to maintain a happiness that is absent in others. In Raymond Carver's
short story, A Small Good Thing, key moments of disconnect are present that create difficulty for the
main characters. The author utilizes major and minor characters in order to reveal the importance of
human connection through highlighting problematic situations caused by disconnect. Disconnect is
stressed greatly throughout the story. It is conveyed through the interactions of all of the characters.
This disconnect is displayed at the beginning of the story. In this encounter, a women named Ann

A Small Good Thing Analysis
A Small, Good Thing The story of "A Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver is about a couple,
Ann and Howard Weiss, who lost their eight–year–old son named Scotty to a hit and run accident.
Later on they found comfort and compassion from a stranger – the baker who made Scotty's cake.
Ann ordered a birthday cake from a local baker for Scotty's birthday. A tragic accident happened to
Scotty on his birthday. The party was canceled and the cake was forgotten. For days, the couple
received calls from an unknown caller. At the end, Ann realized that the unknown caller was the
baker who kept harassing them about the cake. The couple confronted the baker and they told him
that Scotty is dead. A reconciliation was made between the couple and the baker who sat together
and shared a meal. The baker opened up about himself and the couple listened. The central idea of
this story is that lack or failed communication can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Talking
provides understanding and sharing a meal provides compassion and comfort. Just like the baker
said, "Eating is a small, good thing in a time like this." In the beginning of the story a lack of
communication started between the baker and Ann. When Ann was ordering the cake the baker

Pros And Cons Of Small Town America
Let's talk about small town America. It is a wild place. It can be the greatest place on planet earth, or
the worse place you have ever been. Rural towns do have their ups and downs. For instance, in a
house out in the country, you can take a leak off of your back porch, and no one will care. However,
the location of many small country towns makes them a target for trouble. And out away from
civilization, there may be no one to help you in your time of need. So what are the pros and cons of
rural life?
Let's talk about the good things first. A popular good thing that comes to mind is privacy. Privacy is
a window to freedom. You can piss off of your front porch and no one cares, you can listen to your
music as loud as you want to, and you can roam free in your underwear and, likely, no one will see
you. Privacy is good, but what else is nice about small town America? One word: Friends. In small
rural towns, you begin to build close relationship with your neighbors, and sometimes, they may
even become family. Don't take them for granted either, because out in the country, they will be your
first and last life–line. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing
A small good thing is a story that is not so good. It's a sad story about a little boy who get hit by a
car and later dies from shock. But, throughout the story the author, Raymond Carver has a theme
most people don't pick up right away. Raymond talks about human connection. This theme is very
unique in such a sad story. He talks about how two people would hold hands or even rub someone's
back. He really goes into detail with the different connections between two or more people. To feel a
positive connection in such a tragic story was very slim. Most connections were negative. Foe
example, when the mother went to order her son's birthday cake the baker could care less about her
or who the cake was for. Raymond said "the baker was not jolly.

Themes Of ' A Small, Good Thing ' Essay
Themes in 'A Small, Good Thing' Life consists of persistence and lethargy; patience and tragedy;
felicity and suffering; experiences and failures; ups and downs; and accepting the good with the bad
and the bad along with the good. These details create 'slices of life' moments in our lives. As we read
Raymond Carver's short stories, we see these beautiful moments come to pass. One of the short
stories that presented this was 'A Small, Good Thing', where Carver demonstrates occurring themes
of loneliness and helplessness, limitations of communication, and human connections to create
multiple 'slices of life' moments. Loneliness/Helplessness The theme of loneliness and helplessness
occurs often throughout 'A Small, Good Thing'. Raymond introduces us to the baker, who lives a
lonely life. There is no trace of other coworkers that work him and we do not have much of a
background story of him. Whenever the baker is mentioned in the story, we get the impression that
he is at the bakery 24/7. The baker says "What do you want at this hour. It's midnight...I work day
and night here, trying to make ends meet" (Carver 225). The baker may live a lonely life since he
has no children and we do not see any signs of him having a partner. Throughout the story, the
theme of helplessness is also present. Ann and Howard, the parents of Scotty in the story 'A Small,
Good Thing', feel like they cannot help their son, Scotty and that the only people they can rely on
are the Dr. Francis and

A Small, Good Thing Essay
The short story A Small, Good Thing by Raymond Carver tells of two American parents dealing
with their son's hospitalisation and death as the result of a hit–and–run car accident. The insensitive
actions of their local baker add to their anger and confusion, yet by the end of the story, leave them
with a sense of optimism and strength. With such content, Carver runs the risk of coming across as
sentimental; however, this is not the case, and the anguish of the parents and their shock at the
situation is expressed with dignity and understatement. It is a story with a broad appeal: the simple

‘Hey, Scott,' his father said. ‘Hey, son." The failure of communication in the world of A Small,
Good Thing is also represented more directly. For example, the parents feel unable to communicate
with the hospital staff who treat Scotty. This happens literally, through the two orderlies who take
Scotty for his brain scan – "the orderlies stood at either end of the gurney without saying anything,
though once one of the men made a comment to the other in their own language, and the other man
nodded slowly in response." It is also represented through Ann and Howard's frustration and
confusion, through their sharp questions and angry demands – "Why won't he wake up? I want
some answers from these people." At the same time, Ann and Howard do not initially allow each
other to share the experience of Scotty's accident – "She realized with a start that, until now, it had
only been happening to her and to Scotty. She hadn't let Howard into it, though he was there and
needed all along." And yet the trauma of their mutual experience serves to bridge the gap between
them and fosters a deeper understanding: "They seemed to feel each other's insides now, as though
the worry had made them transparent in a perfectly natural way." As such, Carver gives an insightful
view into the way grief can serve not only to alienate but also to bring together those affected by it.
While the parents serve to represent the breakdown of communication, it is the character of the

Raymond Carver 's A Small, Good Thing
In Raymond Carver's A Small, Good Thing, we are presented with several good things worth
cherishing in this heartbreaking story of a young couple dealing with the tragic death of their only
child. The death of the child resulting from a hit–and–run car accident. Carver explains to the reader
how undeniably human it is to take our love ones for granted. In the beginning the selfish actions of
the baker contributed to the couple's anger and confusion. However, by the end of the story they are
left with a sense of optimism and strength. The story, A Small, Good Thing, is not so much about
death as it is about people being able to relate to others loss and fear. The story begins when Ann
Weiss orders a cake for her son's birthday. She describes the baker as "an older man with a thick
neck" (Carver) and states that his attitude made her feel uncomfortable. Additionally, she wonders
"if he 'd ever done anything else with his life besides be a baker"(Carver). Ann is genuinely
surprised at the bakers bad attitude and does not understand why he isn't happy about her son's
birthday. Nevertheless, she continues to order the cake and plans to pick it up on Monday. On her
way out she notices a large oven and that the radio is playing country music. The author is clearly
mindful when it comes to his word choice. The choice of words he uses allows him to convey his
point very well. In this scene where the mother is ordering the cake for her son, she does not inform
the baker of her

be fine – "no coma, Dr. Francis had emphasized, no coma, when he saw the alarm in the parents‘

time, the parents are tormented by late–night phone calls from the baker – "Your Scotty, I got him

psychopath, or the hit–and–run driver who put Scotty into a coma. Then, abruptly, Scotty dies – "the
doctors called it a hidden occlusion and said it was a one–in–a–million circumstance." Numb and
shaken, the parents return home – but after another taunting prank call, Ann realizes that it is the
baker who has been calling, and confronts him in his store; he is instantly remorseful when he learns
of the child's death, and offers Ann and Howard some cinnamon rolls – "a small, good thing in a
time like this." His empathy helps the parents to deal with Scotty's death and to find some small
measure of hope for the future. On a deeper level, A Small, Good Thing is concerned with more
complex themes and ideas. Central is the idea of communication, and lack of communication.
Carver conveys the Weiss family as generally good people. They are a relatively close–knit, function
well as a family, and are grateful for what they have –

Here we have two stories "The Bath" and "A Small Good Thing" written by author Raymond Carver

stories is what defines the image within the readers' imagination. This writer has taken a story and
revised it to either have a deeper or shallower meaning to compare each version side by side to share
how different enough, it could be to make the story sound as if there were two. Raymond Carver

This piece lacks fundamental details, leaving the reader to do much of the work. Carver describes
the story's most pivotal moment in just two sentences. We can only assume that the accident was not
serious. The boy was able to get up and walk home without crying. When he returns home the boy
tells his mother what happened and before we know it the boy is in the hospital. The lack of details
leaves us with a mystery. Using this style of writing allows the reader to use their imagination.
Although style is important, so is the meaning of the story. The meaning of "The Bath" is when the
characters do not lack compassion so much they do lack the means of expressing it. Throughout the
story, we can acknowledge the lack of communication skills (expressing). For instance; when Scotty
(birthday boy) tries to trick his friend into telling him what he bought him for his birthday (his friend
does not say anything), secondly when the baker calls and Scotty's father answers the phone
(something he knows nothing about), and when the father is sitting beside Ann in the hospital he
wanted to say something (but there was no saying about what it should be). With

Microeconomics: The Foundation behind Small Businesses
Microeconomics: The Foundation behind Small Businesses Small business are said to be the
backbone of the United States economy. It said that small businesses contribute to growth and
vitality in the specific area of the United States economic development. Small businesses play a
huge role in how the business world is shaped. Entrepreneurs are smart, creative and innovative
however, those same entrepreneurs need to have some knowledge that the study of microeconomics
focuses on. With the study of microeconomics, their product or future business will succeed in an
economic view point.
Microeconomics analyzes economic decisions on the micro or small level. This includes how a
household or consumer will spend their money. One of the crucial aspects of microeconomics is that
a business owner needs to have the basic understanding of demand. Demand seems to be the most
basic and yet a necessity for small business to be familiar with. The basic concept of demand is that
if a consumer sees the price of something rising, they will look for substitutes. Quality demanded is
an important aspect of understanding demand as a whole. The quantity demanded on a market
depends on many factors. Some of which quantity demanded plays a role in is the price of a good,
the price of competitive goods, consumer income, consumer's preferences, and the length of time
period. Having knowledge about quantity demanded allows one to one to really understand the

Top Business Tools to Increase Productivity
The world seems to be getting more hectic every day. Running a business in the modern world is
definitely not easier – you have to be on top of many things in order to succeed. But interestingly,
the idea that we are constantly doing something is not translating to productivity. In many places,
productivity is not increasing by more than 1% to 2% a year – so where are we going wrong?
For many businesses, the problem is focusing on the wrong things. Business owners might be using
small business HR software but not for tasks that would most benefit their business' productivity.

To get you started with boosting productivity, here are a few examples of the tools you might find
helpful and a few options in terms of the software products.
Project management software
Project management software can have the biggest boost in your productivity. This is exactly for the
reasons mentioned above: we often waste time juggling too many project at once and forget about
the importance of finishing one task before moving on to the next. A good project management tool
will allow you to schedule, prioritise, manage and share different elements of the project.
Examples of good project management software:
Wrike is a solid end–to–end project management tool that can scale according to your business

The Bath And A Small Good Thing
Raymond Carver's short stories The Bath and A Small Good Thing seem to follow the same pattern,
but both versions are written in a different way and to different ends. The pattern used allows the
reader to create a variety of experiences and different perspectives of both storylines. In both stories,
the central plot and most of the details remain the same. The language in The Bath is vague and has
a more sympathetic feeling on the reader whereas A Small Good Thing goes deeper into the
development of the characters and the storyline. I could not help but notice a lack of compassion
from the characters in The Bath; however, in A Small Good Thing, the characters seem to exhibit
more compassion and understanding for each other. While both stories have similarities and
differences, each has its own magical effect upon the reader.
The family structure is made up of a mother, a father, and a son. In the beginning of both stories, the
mother is ordering the son a cake for his coming up birthday party. One notices the similarities in
the opening right away when the mother picks a cake she knows her son will love and tells the baker
to put the name, SCOTTY, in green icing beneath the planet (Carver, 47 & ASGT). Both stories
jump ahead to the day of Scotty's birthday, when an accident takes place. As Scotty is walking to
school, he is hit by a car and winds up in the hospital. As would be expected, the mother is most of
the time by the boy's bedside. The doctor tries to convince

The story quickly becomes dramatic. The morning of his birthday, Scotty is hit by a car on the way

Scotty is walking to school with his friend, eating chips, trying to determine what his pal is getting
him for his birthday: an innocent moment of childhood. This moment is abruptly shattered by Scotty
being hit by a car. Scotty's reaction to the accident remains the same. The stories differ here in there
reactions of the other two people at the accident scene, the driver and Scotty's companion. In 'The
Bath' the young friend of Scotty does not seem to fully understand what happened. He does not
seem to be in shock like Scotty, just too young to understand his friend is hurt, "The other boy stood
holding potato chips. He was wondering if he should finish the rest or continue on to school"
(Carver 920) In contrast, "A Small Good Thing" the boy "dropped the potato chips and started to

A Small Good Thing Analysis
We all have a tie to food, whether we like it or not we all come from somewhere where a certain
food was a part of a certain celebration. Many of these traditional food celebrations have been
passed down from generation to generation. Many authors have written about what food means to
them and how it doesn't change through the generations. For example, In "A small, good thing", by
Raymond Carver, the plot of the story revolves around a child's birthday cake and how the tradition
of cake is never changing. Many other authors such as Sarah Desmarais, Alyssa Kowalczyk and
Donovan Duffy, have also touched upon the idea that food is the one thing in life that will never
really change. People will always change whether it be in height, in width, ... Show more content on

Both Desmarais and Carvier show through context that even though life could change at any
moment when you sit down to a meal the food always seems to bring back memories and be the
same. Desmarais addresses this when she says, "life can be full of frequent change... However, life
is also full of memories and people who can always make things a little easier". The idea of food
being more than just something that keeps you alive is prevalent throughout Desmarais's essay. She
focuses on the memories that she has made with food and how those can brighten her day. The
meatballs and spaghetti that Desmarais describes is not really what she values most. Desmarais
believes that the memories of being at her grandmothers in Rhode Island are the things that will
never change. The meatballs and spaghetti are just the substance that brings these memories back to
her. Carvier addresses this towards the end of his short story with the scene of the two parents
starting to get angry at the baker over the cake. After the baker had been calling for days and neither
of the parents had known who is was the mother finally comes to the realization that is was "the
son–of–a–bitch baker... [whom she had] bake a cake for Scotty's birthday... [and that he was] calling
[them] to harass [them] about the cake" (Carver, 215). The parents were not actually mad at the
baker. He was just their scape goat for the pain of losing their son. The

A Small Good Thing Analysis
For a world that is constantly connected through the internet and electronics, society has never been
more disconnected. This theme is demonstrated many times within Raymond Carver's A Small,
Good Thing, which is about a young boy named Scotty who gets hit by a car on his birthday and
ends up in the hospital. The story focuses mostly on Scotty's parents and their reactions to the
conflicts that they have to face throughout the story. Even though this story ends very tragically,
Scotty's parents, Howard and Ann, learn what they have missing from their lives. The disconnection
that is shown in the short story ruins people's lives and makes them feel alone even when they aren't.
The theme, that lack of connections in a society can be harmful, is shown in the story by Ann and
Howard's interactions, the baker's actions, and the doctors and nurses. Ann and Howard's
interactions show a great deal of disconnect throughout the whole story. This is shown first on page
three when Howard is trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the hospital, the doctors and nurses were not only unprofessional, but they did not seem to care
about the boy's well–being in any way. The doctor said to them, "He's all right... Nothing to shout
about, he could be better, I think. But he's all right. Still, I wish he'd wake up. He should wake up
pretty soon." (Page 4). The attitude of the doctor and nurses is very nonchalant. Whenever they
would walk into Scotty's room, they'd check everything and leave, no talking to Ann and Howard or
telling them how Scotty is doing. They also were never sure of what was going on, they had ideas
and thoughts but never really acted on them until it was absolutely necessary. In fact, they seemed
more interested in the parents than their patient. The doctors and nurses in the story showed a great
lack of concern for the well–being of Scotty, even though it is there job to look after those

The Calm: A Small, Good Thing, And Cathedral
In the article, "The Calm," "a Small, Good Thing," and "Cathedral": Raymond Carver and the
Rediscovery of Human Worth, by Mark A. R. Facknitz, states "In fictional terms, he learns to shift
point of view. In emotional terms, he learns to feel empathy" (295). This means that the husband had
preconceived notions about blind people. These made him narrow minded which added to his
negativity. Perhaps this is the reason he is isolated. He did not accept difference, like the way he
didn't accept and expect a blind man to have a beard. After having met Robert he now has a better
understanding and can connect more to the world outside his comfort zone. It's one step in the
direction of accepting others and learning more about the real world. He can ... Show more content

It helps the husband understand more about the situation. Having empathy is a huge factor to
connect and become closer with others. It also states that "In the moment when the blind man and
the narrator share an identical perception...the narrator sense of enclosure...vanishes" (295). The
narrator felt open to the world and hasn't felt limited at that moment when he and Robert were
drawing. Similarly, in Keeping the Reader in the House: American Minimalism, Literary
Impressionism, and Raymond Carver's "Cathedral", by Robert C. Clark, explains that the husband
has changed in ways from being "prejudice to understanding" (108). When the husband first saw
Robert, he questioned why the blind man had to stay with them and why did the blind man have a
beard. He was prejudice and expected Robert to be a simple man. But not after drawing with Robert,
he can understand why Robert unique and complex. The husband now understands that no one is
perfect and that everyone has flaws. Also, Robert C. Clark states that in "Cathedral...suggest that a
lack of vision results in an isolation that leads to a poverty of the senses" (112). This means that the
husband felt that since Robert lacked vision, it meant that he lacked all of his other senses and that
his other senses couldn't make up for his blindness. The husband at first felt that you need all the

Which Is Better A Big School Or Small School?
Which is better, a small school or a large school? There are several advantages and disadvantages
ofbigger and smaller colleges. These can be deciding factors for some people when choosing what
school they want to go to. These are some of the better things about going to a small school. In a
smaller school the classes are typically smaller, which means the professor and the students may
have a better relationship. The students will get to know the professor better than being at a big
college where the classes will be a lot larger. The professor can be more focused on each student
with a smaller class. Smaller schools like a community college are typically less expensive than a
large university. Everything is more expensive at a larger school,

A Small, Good Thing Analysis
"A Small, Good Thing" is a short story by the author Raymond Carver. Raymond Carver was born
on May 25, 1938 in Clatskanie, Oregon. Carver attributed his desire to write from his father at a
very young age. Throughout his life he maintained a series of low waged jobs to support his family
while he continued his education to become a writer. Raymond Carver wrote three collections of
stories in which the third collection of stories, Cathedral, contains the short story "A Small, Good
Thing". 1984 divorced Maryann (his first wife) and married a poet Tess Gallagher. Carver was

We see how the connection Ann tries to make in the beginning of the story would lead them back to
the baker at the end. Also, the cake was a symbol of Scotty's childhood that he wouldn't have now
that he's gone. We can also, see the changes in character of both the doctor and the baker and how at
the end they come in form of comfort rather than being distant. Similarly, his use of isolation,
tragedy and unfolding of the truth connects well with the readers because it's something we all can
connect to in times of grief. There are times when we do feel as if we are alone and we find comfort
in the presence of others as well as something simply like an object. Through this, we understand the
meaning of "A Small Good Thing". We understand that it's about the willingness of people to come
together and getting to know one another because that's what makes our lives worthwhile. The

The World Needs These Places Essay
WOOSTER – "The world needs these places," David Rowell said as he sat in a chair while his wife
and friends shopped at the Village Gift Barn in Berlin Saturday.
Rowell and his group were among the thousands of shoppers in Wayne and Holmes counties who
spent the day buying from locally owned businesses on Shop Small Saturday, a campaign initiated
in 2010, but a concept that predates it.
Every year, Rowell comes from Willoughby Hills to spend a couple days in the Amish heartland
following Thanksgiving. "The retailers and the small businesses keep this country moving," he said.
"Bigger stores do not have the uniqueness of a store like this. The staff is always polite and very
nice."
Ruth Schlabach, owner of the Village Gift Barn, was working the floor Saturday. "There are lots of
people – lookers and buyers. It's been a good weekend."
Schlabach was one of several business owners, like Cheryl Davis at Today's Kitchen Store and Carol
Rueger at the Wooster Book Company, who said Saturday was good, but, so, too, was Black Friday.
Jeff and Amber Stadalsky, from North Royalton, were shopping in the Village Gift Barn with their
son, Logan. They come to Amish country often. They were in town for Black Friday, stayed at the
Amish Door Inn and spent some time in Berlin Saturday buying Christmas gifts.
They were looking for "stuff you won't find near us," Jeff Stadalsky said.
That is the environment Schlabach and her workers aim for. "We have lots of different products, and

Family Is Better Than Big Family
A few years ago, a lot of families had a dozen or more children. Nowadays the families are choosing

success in family. Family is a place that you can be yourself. It is a place where you are
acknowledged for who you are. This is where you are completely tension free and everyone is there
to help you. Family unit encourages you when you are surrounded by problems. It helps you survive
through tough times, bring joy and happiness into life. (Romeromp, 2013, p1).Graciousness is very

have more variety of brands chocolate than Costco. Not only chocolates but a lot of things we can
see in variety in Sam's Club than Costco. I prefer more variety so I don't like Costco. Factors that
influence customers for low–priced stores are that store must be at good location which can be
convenient for everyone, must be stock nice and most importantly prices and services should be

3 I would rate Costco's competitive strategy as pursuing focus because focus is when you focus on
small group of people in the market to sell your product. Costco does the same thing. They focus on
small market consumers. They focus on small businesses and families who can buy the stuff at low
price. They focus on small business to sell the products to them at wholesale price so for me, they

Summary Of Epictetus 'The Handbook'
In "The Handbook", Epictetus provides a way of life a stoic should follow to be a good member of
the society, which is a life detached from things one cannot change and focused instead on things
that can be improved. For instance, he asked people to care none about the way others would judge
them as he quoted "If anyone tells you that such a person speaks ill of you, don't make excuses
about what is said of you, but answer: "He does not know my other faults, else he would not have
mentioned only these."" Through this quote, Epictetus wanted all stoics to know all their faults
better than anyone else can say about them. Hence, the person would not be disturbed by the way

For instance, he quoted "Don't be prideful with any excellence that is not your own. If a horse
should be prideful and say, " I am handsome," it would be supportable. But when you are prideful,
and say, " I have a handsome horse," know that you are proud of what is, in fact, only the good of
the horse." In this sentence, Epictetus wanted to teach the stoics to learn to proud of only something
they can achieve not something they own. In fact, this idea helped create a better citizen who would
not become too conceited simply because of something valuable he or she had. Also, a person would
then focus more on how to achieve his or her own success, one which this person could take pride
in. Furthermore, Epictetus wanted the stoics to put a higher goal before they choose to quit simply
because of afraid: "Aiming therefore at such great things, remember that you must not allow
yourself to be carried, even with a slight tendency, towards the attainment of lesser things." In this
quote, Epictetus addressed those who aimed at too small an objective as well as those who wanted to
earn both a great thing and the small one. In fact, he saw a person who know which goal he or she
should aim for would probably achieve a higher accomplishment and thus became a better member

his first visit to the sandlot he finds himself in the outfield with a fly ball descending toward him
which bounces off his glove causing the other boys except "Benny the jet" Rodriguez the team's
leader to burst out laughing Smalls is humiliated and leaves. Smalls asks his Step–Father to teach

Big School Vs Small School
When it comes to school it can be a big choice but some are far better than others and people must
take in all the possibilities in choosing a school. There are many factors that could change a student's
mind and the only way to choose the right school is to meet those factors. The thing about small
schools is that the teachers have a better relation between each student opposed to a large school
where the teacher has to deal with many more students. Another good thing about small schools is
sports because most the time you don't have to be all star good to play but in big schools you have to
be very good to play. It's the same thing with activities such as band, BPA, FCCLA, FFA and many
others in that you don't have to be Einstein to be in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A low student count in a class could mean higher grades because the teacher is able communicate
directly with each student if needed. In a smaller school the student can also receive help much more
easier and can get better. Also what is better in a smaller school is that there is more time and
opportunity for a student that works slower than the rest to still be caught up opposed to a large
school where they usually just teach them all at once and usually can't help a student that is
struggling.
The thing that could be bad about small schools and great about large school is sports. Small will
usually have your basic sports such as football, baseball, basketball, and maybe some others. On the
other hand, a large school would have a lot more sports to choose from such as soccer and tennis
and water sports. This could affect someone's decision on a school. Though as I said earlier that in
larger school you might have to be really good at the sport to play it or they might not put the person

Analysis Of ' Cathedral ' And ' A Small, Good Thing '
Lack of communication affects the whole personality of a human being, in both a personal and
social sense. Without proper communication one may feel separated from others, either physically
or emotionally. Sometimes a person is aware of the cause of his or her deep discontent, while others
are unfortunately unaware of how deeply their loneliness affects them. This unawareness of the truth
with themselves creates a delusion of their reality. In the two short stories, "Cathedral", and "A
Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver we observe how encounters between people of different
backgrounds and tragedy can reveal his or her delusion of their current state of mind. People should
learn how to efficiently communicate because without it inhibits loneliness, creates a delusion of
reality, and causes isolation. Lack of communication results in unhealthy relationships with yourself
and with others.
In the short story, "Cathedral" we are introduced to an unnamed male narrator, who acts as the
protagonist of the story. The story unfolds through the narrator 's point of view as we are introduced
to his wife and her blind friend, Robert. It is clear the moment the narrator is aware of Robert's visit
he becomes tense and uncomfortable, "I wasn't enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew.
And his being blind bothered me... A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to"
("Cathedral" 33). The narrator is unwelcoming and readers are quick to sense his dissatisfaction and

Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing
Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing
Raymond Carver's "A Small Good Thing," a short story that has to do with the lack of interaction
and empathy between the baker, Ann and Howard, the finale where the baker is startled to find out
about the child's death, asks for mercy and presents them warm cinnamon rolls telling them that
"Eating is a small, good thing in a time like this" and they are comforted, reveals particular
significance of the title in terms of the story's theme. Also, Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," a story
that starts with an ignorant and rude narrator whose wife has called a blind friend to spend the night
at their home and according to Carver, "A blind man in my house was not something I looked
forward to,"(38) has some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the baker takes all the rage thrown on him by Ann, he in return begs for forgiveness and gives
the parents what they were lacking, that is food. The baker does all this even though he is alone and
virtually makes contact with anybody.
In Raymond's "Cathedral," certain similarities can be drawn from the thematic content that is
revealed in both stories. In "Cathedral," the theme is expansive, but the ones that are similar in both
stories are communication, and empathy.
The communication theme in this story is much more serious than the one in "A Small Good Thing,"
the reason being that the narrator has less or no communication whatsoever with his wife. This is
vividly shown in the story where the narrator says "When the time rolled around, my wife went to
the depot to pick him up. With nothing to do but wait, I was having a drink and watching TV."(41)
This deficiency of intimacy, intercourse led the narrator to be ignorant but very thoughtful. However
the narrator's thoughtfulness did not lead him to understand that his lack of tolerance was much
more serious than he knew it was.
In "A Small Good Thing," as mentioned earlier, after Howard returns home, the baker keeps on
calling him and telling him about the cake, but Howard tells him "I don't know anything about a
cake, Jesus what are you talking about?" Ann never tells Howard about the cake she ordered before
Scott's accident. Here the lack of communication theme is less serious

characters show that even in times of great sorrow, they realize that they can still carry on. The
author does an excellent job describing the emotions of the characters, particularly during the scenes
that show the characters realizing their lives have changed. Howard, the father of Scotty, a young

Examples Of Sameness In The Giver

  • 1. Examples Of Sameness In The Giver Would you want to live in a world where there is no choice and mild feelings? Can you imagine a world where everything is decided for you, and you are irrelevant? This is the way that the community in The Giver is run; it is called sameness. Sameness is not a good way to live, because you can learn from your mistakes, difference can be a good thing, and there is no reason to live without choice. One reason Sameness is not a good way to live is that with sameness people cannot make any bad decisions. When people make bad decisions you learn from them, and they can help them make better decisions in the future. One example from The Giver is when Jonas takes the apple and the speaker called him out on, after that he never took an apple again. There are not enough opportunities for small choices with small consequences with sameness. When someone experiences consequences or embarrassment they are less likely to do something causing consequences again. If they learn to make good choices with small decisions, they are more likely to make good choices the first time with big decisions. However this is not possible with sameness, and this is one reason sameness is bad. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example from The Giver is that Jonas enjoys the colors of the flowers, and the colors Gabe has. Also, without differences the world is boring. With sameness everyone that you knew looked exactly the same, and lived the exact same way. That is the way sameness works in Jonas' community. There needs to be some difference partly because different types of people need different living conditions. It is not a good idea to make people live under that many restrictions, because they will not be able to have any fun. These are all reasons difference can be a good thing, and taking it away would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Little Things When you're not paying close attention to all of the good things that can happen to you throughout the day, you don't really notice how many small things there are that can have a positive effect. Small things on their own aren't much, but when you start to add them up they can become something huge. For instance, playing fetch with my Labrador Buddy, or giving in to that craving of chocolate and enjoying every bite are very small things in the grand scheme of things, but take either out of my life and it would be a tragedy. Every once in a while something happens that is clearly a big good thing, but they don't happen often enough to really get you through that daily grind. For instance, my mom recently celebrated her 70th birthday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are things that are small on the surface, but if they went away they would be pretty big. If suddenly you have a health scare and are hanging on to your life, something like having a good meal would seem pretty huge. If somebody you loved were to die, suddenly those hugs that you used to share with them every day would linger over you and the lack of their presence would be one of the saddest things in your life. The small things are really the big things because they reflect what truly matters to you. I have a very busy life and not everyday do I think about and appreciate having a simple phone conversation with a friend, getting a much–needed hug from my boyfriend, or even just spending time with my niece, but these are the things that would feel crippling if they went away. By doing this experiment I learned that people generally focus too much on the negative things in the world and end up making themselves feel like victims. And they don't pay enough attention to the little things in the world that add up to make for a life that's worth living. People love to recall all of the bad things that happen to them throughout the day, but really things don't happen to people, things just happen. There are probably an equal amount of good things and bad things, so the trick to getting through life and making yourself happy is to control how you respond to the world. If you focus on the bad and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Small Good Thing By Raymond Carver And The Birthmark Essay A Small Birthmark with Vampiric Communion In the stories "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond Carver and "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are obvious differences between the two tales. While "A Small Good Thing" has to do with a family dealing with the injury and then loss of their "The Birthmark" is a scientific quest to remove a birthmark. The analysis of these two stories show both similarities as well as the differences between the main themes of Vampirism, Communion. These two main themes come from How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. Foster describes Vampirism as not only true vampires but the idea and concepts included with them. These concepts vary from parasitic ideals to how vampires can be as old as time. The other main theme is Communion which by definition is the sharing of food or drink. Foster connects communion to having a bond or event take place during a meals which can be either good or bad. The main themes of Vampirism and Communion in "A Small Good Thing" and "The Birthmark" have both commonalities as well as variances that perfectly reflect the ideas representing in Fosters book. In the two stories, "A Small Good Thing" and "The Birthmark", vampirism be used to describe the tales as an overarching theme. While vampirism is an overarching theme, this does not mean that any vampires are in the stories. Vampirism as a theme rather explains ideas that can be associated with vampires. In the tale of "The Birthmark" vampirism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Who Is The Narrator In A Small Good Thing 1 – Carver elicits the reader's sympathy in this story by presenting the reader with a slow–moving although intense narration of a boy's death whose parents are stricken with grief and panic. 2 – The baker would be simply described as a man who is focused on doing his job. Moreover, he is unexpectedly incorporated into a conflict in which he did not attend, rather his intents were more habitual. It is up to the reader to realize that the baker has a life of his own, as he bakes for money in which he must require to survive. He keeps calling for, indubitably, that reason alone–he wants his money. My impression of him definitely changed as I rather hated him in the beginning, but at the end I realized I was fantastically mislead and respected him. It was quite touching. 3 – The doctor, Dr. Francis, was presented as a seemingly suspicious character through context. He was quite well–intended as he hoped to reassure the parents that everything was fine–he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, as his wife orders a cake for her son, she does not notify her husband of her doings. Consequently, after the son was in the hospital the father went home and a telephone call inquired about a sixteen–dollar cake, but he had no inkling to what he was talking about. Indubitably, this put the parents in a much worse spot than they would have been without the mysterious phone caller riling them up all the time. This concern is also shown with the baker as when the mother orders the cake in the beginning, they limit communication to an absolute minimum. This leads the parents to assume a bad nature of him after they realize he was the caller the entire time. It seems though much of the anger in the story could have been avoided with a little more communication, and so was Raymond Carver's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. What Is The Dismissive Way In 'When Doctors Need To Lie' Doctor's were taught how to tend to their patients, not their surrogates which is why surrogates are usually dismissed or neglected. In the narrative "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond Carver, this idea is further supported when we look at the real world research in done in What Doctor Know About How Bad It Is and Won't Say It" by Paula Span and "When Doctors Need to Lie" by Sandeep Jauhar. When looking at the stories "A Small Good Thing","What Doctor Know About How Bad It Is and Won't Say It" and "When Doctors Need to Lie" by Sandeep Jauhar, we realized that the dismissive way in which the Weisses are treated by the hospital staff is caused by the doctors not wanting to be the bearer of substandard new and wanting the families to cling to hope. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the doctors were to tell the surrogates that truth in severe situations the family can better prepare for the consequences, but they will lose faith in the doctors' work. The doctors are very hesitant and dubious to address the patients' families. In the text "A Small Good Thing" by Raymond Carver there could have been alternative ending that was better for the Weisses. If they had known beforehand while their son was being operated on, they would have been able to handle the situation better. They would have been semi emotionally prepared for a life without their son. At the end of the novel they were told all the information that has been withheld since they entered the hospital. The information was just piled on and before they had time to process they had to leave. If the Weisses were given accurate and detailed information from the start the situation would have been better to handle. Therefore, the doctors would not have had to carry the burden of information all by themselves or had to take on the guilt of the son's death. In the novel, it says the death of the son could have been prevented if the doctors had been more informed about the son's condition. If the doctors and the Weisses had an honest ... • 15. A Small Good Thing Analysis A Small, Good Thing The story of "A Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver is about a couple, Ann and Howard Weiss, who lost their eight–year–old son named Scotty to a hit and run accident. Later on they found comfort and compassion from a stranger – the baker who made Scotty's cake. Ann ordered a birthday cake from a local baker for Scotty's birthday. A tragic accident happened to Scotty on his birthday. The party was canceled and the cake was forgotten. For days, the couple received calls from an unknown caller. At the end, Ann realized that the unknown caller was the baker who kept harassing them about the cake. The couple confronted the baker and they told him that Scotty is dead. A reconciliation was made between the couple and the baker who sat together and shared a meal. The baker opened up about himself and the couple listened. The central idea of this story is that lack or failed communication can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Talking provides understanding and sharing a meal provides compassion and comfort. Just like the baker said, "Eating is a small, good thing in a time like this." In the beginning of the story a lack of communication started between the baker and Ann. • 17. Pros And Cons Of Small Town America Let's talk about small town America. It is a wild place. It can be the greatest place on planet earth, or the worse place you have ever been. Rural towns do have their ups and downs. For instance, in a house out in the country, you can take a leak off of your back porch, and no one will care. However, the location of many small country towns makes them a target for trouble. And out away from civilization, there may be no one to help you in your time of need. So what are the pros and cons of rural life? Let's talk about the good things first. A popular good thing that comes to mind is privacy. Privacy is a window to freedom. You can piss off of your front porch and no one cares, you can listen to your music as loud as you want to, and you can roam free in your underwear and, likely, no one will see you. Privacy is good, but what else is nice about small town America? One word: Friends. In small rural towns, you begin to build close relationship with your neighbors, and sometimes, they may even become family. Don't take them for granted either, because out in the country, they will be your first and last life–line. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 19. Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing A small good thing is a story that is not so good. It's a sad story about a little boy who get hit by a car and later dies from shock. But, throughout the story the author, Raymond Carver has a theme most people don't pick up right away. Raymond talks about human connection. This theme is very unique in such a sad story. He talks about how two people would hold hands or even rub someone's back. He really goes into detail with the different connections between two or more people. To feel a positive connection in such a tragic story was very slim. Most connections were negative. Foe example, when the mother went to order her son's birthday cake the baker could care less about her or who the cake was for. Raymond said "the baker was not jolly. ... • 21. Themes Of ' A Small, Good Thing ' Essay Themes in 'A Small, Good Thing' Life consists of persistence and lethargy; patience and tragedy; felicity and suffering; experiences and failures; ups and downs; and accepting the good with the bad and the bad along with the good. These details create 'slices of life' moments in our lives. As we read Raymond Carver's short stories, we see these beautiful moments come to pass. One of the short stories that presented this was 'A Small, Good Thing', where Carver demonstrates occurring themes of loneliness and helplessness, limitations of communication, and human connections to create multiple 'slices of life' moments. Loneliness/Helplessness The theme of loneliness and helplessness occurs often throughout 'A Small, Good Thing'. Raymond introduces us to the baker, who lives a lonely life. There is no trace of other coworkers that work him and we do not have much of a background story of him. Whenever the baker is mentioned in the story, we get the impression that he is at the bakery 24/7. The baker says "What do you want at this hour. It's midnight...I work day and night here, trying to make ends meet" (Carver 225). The baker may live a lonely life since he has no children and we do not see any signs of him having a partner. Throughout the story, the theme of helplessness is also present. Ann and Howard, the parents of Scotty in the story 'A Small, Good Thing', feel like they cannot help their son, Scotty and that the only people they can rely on are the Dr. Francis and ... • 23. A Small, Good Thing Essay The short story A Small, Good Thing by Raymond Carver tells of two American parents dealing with their son's hospitalisation and death as the result of a hit–and–run car accident. The insensitive actions of their local baker add to their anger and confusion, yet by the end of the story, leave them with a sense of optimism and strength. With such content, Carver runs the risk of coming across as sentimental; however, this is not the case, and the anguish of the parents and their shock at the situation is expressed with dignity and understatement. It is a story with a broad appeal: the simple prose makes it accessible to a wide audience, while the complex themes and issues make it appealing to the educated reader. Written in Carver's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ‘Hey, Scott,' his father said. ‘Hey, son." The failure of communication in the world of A Small, Good Thing is also represented more directly. For example, the parents feel unable to communicate with the hospital staff who treat Scotty. This happens literally, through the two orderlies who take Scotty for his brain scan – "the orderlies stood at either end of the gurney without saying anything, though once one of the men made a comment to the other in their own language, and the other man nodded slowly in response." It is also represented through Ann and Howard's frustration and confusion, through their sharp questions and angry demands – "Why won't he wake up? I want some answers from these people." At the same time, Ann and Howard do not initially allow each other to share the experience of Scotty's accident – "She realized with a start that, until now, it had only been happening to her and to Scotty. She hadn't let Howard into it, though he was there and needed all along." And yet the trauma of their mutual experience serves to bridge the gap between them and fosters a deeper understanding: "They seemed to feel each other's insides now, as though the worry had made them transparent in a perfectly natural way." As such, Carver gives an insightful view into the way grief can serve not only to alienate but also to bring together those affected by it. While the parents serve to represent the breakdown of communication, it is the character of the baker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Raymond Carver 's A Small, Good Thing In Raymond Carver's A Small, Good Thing, we are presented with several good things worth cherishing in this heartbreaking story of a young couple dealing with the tragic death of their only child. The death of the child resulting from a hit–and–run car accident. Carver explains to the reader how undeniably human it is to take our love ones for granted. In the beginning the selfish actions of the baker contributed to the couple's anger and confusion. However, by the end of the story they are left with a sense of optimism and strength. The story, A Small, Good Thing, is not so much about death as it is about people being able to relate to others loss and fear. The story begins when Ann Weiss orders a cake for her son's birthday. She describes the baker as "an older man with a thick neck" (Carver) and states that his attitude made her feel uncomfortable. Additionally, she wonders "if he 'd ever done anything else with his life besides be a baker"(Carver). Ann is genuinely surprised at the bakers bad attitude and does not understand why he isn't happy about her son's birthday. Nevertheless, she continues to order the cake and plans to pick it up on Monday. On her way out she notices a large oven and that the radio is playing country music. The author is clearly mindful when it comes to his word choice. The choice of words he uses allows him to convey his point very well. It helps alot while playing hide and seek, for example if there is a narrow opening between a wall or something I could fit through there to hide. At the same time, the parents are tormented by late–night phone calls from the baker – "Your Scotty, I got him ready for you Did you forget him?" – whose mysterious messages lead them to believe he is a psychopath, or the hit–and–run driver who put Scotty into a coma. Then, abruptly, Scotty dies – "the doctors called it a hidden occlusion and said it was a one–in–a–million circumstance." Numb and shaken, the parents return home – but after another taunting prank call, Ann realizes that it is the baker who has been calling, and confronts him in his store; he is instantly remorseful when he learns of the child's death, and offers Ann and Howard some cinnamon rolls – "a small, good thing in a time like this." His empathy helps the parents to deal with Scotty's death and to find some small measure of hope for the future. • 31. Essay Comparing The Bath And A Small Good Thing By Raymond... Here we have two stories "The Bath" and "A Small Good Thing" written by author Raymond Carver with the same premise but different ways of reaching its audience. Within this essay, I will state their differences in style, meaning and tone. While also, comparing particular passages by way of explaining distinctions in the description, and characterization. Each of the differences within these stories is what defines the image within the readers' imagination. This writer has taken a story and revised it to either have a deeper or shallower meaning to compare each version side by side to share how different enough, it could be to make the story sound as if there were two. Raymond Carver tells a dramatic story that is full of disaster and emotions. But, "The Bath" is quite the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This piece lacks fundamental details, leaving the reader to do much of the work. Carver describes the story's most pivotal moment in just two sentences. We can only assume that the accident was not serious. The boy was able to get up and walk home without crying. When he returns home the boy tells his mother what happened and before we know it the boy is in the hospital. The lack of details leaves us with a mystery. Using this style of writing allows the reader to use their imagination. Although style is important, so is the meaning of the story. The meaning of "The Bath" is when the characters do not lack compassion so much they do lack the means of expressing it. Throughout the story, we can acknowledge the lack of communication skills (expressing). For instance; when Scotty (birthday boy) tries to trick his friend into telling him what he bought him for his birthday (his friend does not say anything), secondly when the baker calls and Scotty's father answers the phone (something he knows nothing about), and when the father is sitting beside Ann in the hospital he wanted to say something (but there was no saying about what it should be). This includes how a household or consumer will spend their money. One of the crucial aspects of microeconomics is that a business owner needs to have the basic understanding of demand. Demand seems to be the most basic and yet a necessity for small business to be familiar with. The basic concept of demand is that if a consumer sees the price of something rising, they will look for substitutes. Quality demanded is an important aspect of understanding demand as a whole. The quantity demanded on a market depends on many factors. Some of which quantity demanded plays a role in is the price of a good, the price of competitive goods, consumer income, consumer's preferences, and the length of time period. • 38. The Bath And A Small Good Thing Raymond Carver's short stories The Bath and A Small Good Thing seem to follow the same pattern, but both versions are written in a different way and to different ends. The pattern used allows the reader to create a variety of experiences and different perspectives of both storylines. In both stories, the central plot and most of the details remain the same. The language in The Bath is vague and has a more sympathetic feeling on the reader whereas A Small Good Thing goes deeper into the development of the characters and the storyline. I could not help but notice a lack of compassion from the characters in The Bath; however, in A Small Good Thing, the characters seem to exhibit more compassion and understanding for each other. While both stories have similarities and differences, each has its own magical effect upon the reader. The family structure is made up of a mother, a father, and a son. In the beginning of both stories, the mother is ordering the son a cake for his coming up birthday party. One notices the similarities in the opening right away when the mother picks a cake she knows her son will love and tells the baker to put the name, SCOTTY, in green icing beneath the planet (Carver, 47 & ASGT). Both stories jump ahead to the day of Scotty's birthday, when an accident takes place. As Scotty is walking to school, he is hit by a car and winds up in the hospital. As would be expected, the mother is most of the time by the boy's bedside. The doctor tries to convince ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Raymond Carver's 'The Bath' and rewritten version of the story entitled 'A Small, Good Thing', the author tells the same tale in different ways, and to different ends, creating variegated experiences for the reader. Both stories have the same central plot and a majority of details remain the same, but the effects that the stories have upon the reader is significantly different. The greatest character difference is found in the role of the Baker, and his interaction with the other characters. This moment is abruptly shattered by Scotty being hit by a car. Scotty's reaction to the accident remains the same. The stories differ here in there reactions of the other two people at the accident scene, the driver and Scotty's companion. • 42. A Small Good Thing Analysis We all have a tie to food, whether we like it or not we all come from somewhere where a certain food was a part of a certain celebration. Many of these traditional food celebrations have been passed down from generation to generation. Many authors have written about what food means to them and how it doesn't change through the generations. For example, In "A small, good thing", by Raymond Carver, the plot of the story revolves around a child's birthday cake and how the tradition of cake is never changing. Many other authors such as Sarah Desmarais, Alyssa Kowalczyk and Donovan Duffy, have also touched upon the idea that food is the one thing in life that will never really change. Both Desmarais and Carvier show through context that even though life could change at any moment when you sit down to a meal the food always seems to bring back memories and be the same. Desmarais addresses this when she says, "life can be full of frequent change... However, life is also full of memories and people who can always make things a little easier". The idea of food being more than just something that keeps you alive is prevalent throughout Desmarais's essay. She focuses on the memories that she has made with food and how those can brighten her day. The meatballs and spaghetti that Desmarais describes is not really what she values most. Desmarais believes that the memories of being at her grandmothers in Rhode Island are the things that will never change. The meatballs and spaghetti are just the substance that brings these memories back to her. Carvier addresses this towards the end of his short story with the scene of the two parents starting to get angry at the baker over the cake. After the baker had been calling for days and neither of the parents had known who is was the mother finally comes to the realization that is was "the son–of–a–bitch baker... [whom she had] bake a cake for Scotty's birthday... [and that he was] calling [them] to harass [them] about the cake" (Carver, 215). The parents were not actually mad at the baker. • 44. A Small Good Thing Analysis For a world that is constantly connected through the internet and electronics, society has never been more disconnected. This theme is demonstrated many times within Raymond Carver's A Small, Good Thing, which is about a young boy named Scotty who gets hit by a car on his birthday and ends up in the hospital. The story focuses mostly on Scotty's parents and their reactions to the conflicts that they have to face throughout the story. Even though this story ends very tragically, Scotty's parents, Howard and Ann, learn what they have missing from their lives. The disconnection that is shown in the short story ruins people's lives and makes them feel alone even when they aren't. The theme, that lack of connections in a society can be harmful, is shown in the story by Ann and Howard's interactions, the baker's actions, and the doctors and nurses. Ann and Howard's interactions show a great deal of disconnect throughout the whole story. This is shown first on page three when Howard is trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The attitude of the doctor and nurses is very nonchalant. Whenever they would walk into Scotty's room, they'd check everything and leave, no talking to Ann and Howard or telling them how Scotty is doing. They also were never sure of what was going on, they had ideas and thoughts but never really acted on them until it was absolutely necessary. Without proper communication one may feel separated from others, either physically or emotionally. Sometimes a person is aware of the cause of his or her deep discontent, while others are unfortunately unaware of how deeply their loneliness affects them. This unawareness of the truth with themselves creates a delusion of their reality. In the two short stories, "Cathedral", and "A Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver we observe how encounters between people of different backgrounds and tragedy can reveal his or her delusion of their current state of mind. People should learn how to efficiently communicate because without it inhibits loneliness, creates a delusion of reality, and causes isolation. Lack of communication results in unhealthy relationships with yourself and with others. In the short story, "Cathedral" we are introduced to an unnamed male narrator, who acts as the protagonist of the story. The story unfolds through the narrator 's point of view as we are introduced to his wife and her blind friend, Robert. It is clear the moment the narrator is aware of Robert's visit he becomes tense and uncomfortable, "I wasn't enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me... A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to" ("Cathedral" 33). The narrator is unwelcoming and readers are quick to sense his dissatisfaction and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. • 76. Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing Raymond Carver's A Small Good Thing Raymond Carver's "A Small Good Thing," a short story that has to do with the lack of interaction and empathy between the baker, Ann and Howard, the finale where the baker is startled to find out about the child's death, asks for mercy and presents them warm cinnamon rolls telling them that "Eating is a small, good thing in a time like this" and they are comforted, reveals particular significance of the title in terms of the story's theme. Also, Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," a story that starts with an ignorant and rude narrator whose wife has called a blind friend to spend the night at their home and according to Carver, "A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to,"(38) has some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the baker takes all the rage thrown on him by Ann, he in return begs for forgiveness and gives the parents what they were lacking, that is food. The baker does all this even though he is alone and virtually makes contact with anybody. In Raymond's "Cathedral," certain similarities can be drawn from the thematic content that is revealed in both stories. In "Cathedral," the theme is expansive, but the ones that are similar in both stories are communication, and empathy. The communication theme in this story is much more serious than the one in "A Small Good Thing," the reason being that the narrator has less or no communication whatsoever with his wife. This is vividly shown in the story where the narrator says "When the time rolled around, my wife went to the depot to pick him up. With nothing to do but wait, I was having a drink and watching TV."(41) This deficiency of intimacy, intercourse led the narrator to be ignorant but very thoughtful. However the narrator's thoughtfulness did not lead him to understand that his lack of tolerance was much more serious than he knew it was. In "A Small Good Thing," as mentioned earlier, after Howard returns home, the baker keeps on calling him and telling him about the cake, but Howard tells him "I don't know anything about a cake, Jesus what are you talking about?" Ann never tells Howard about the cake she ordered before Scott's accident. Here the lack of communication theme is less serious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Loneliness In A Small Good Thing By Raymond Carver A Small Good Thing by Raymond Carver has several themes running through the story. The theme of great sadness is shown early on in the story along with the realization that that life can change in a single moment. There is also a theme about loneliness. In this story the characters face difficult times and do not realize that others may be going through the same thing. Additionally, the characters show that even in times of great sorrow, they realize that they can still carry on.
