What direction is the “old web” relationship? Top-down, expert-created, static, passively consumed

Editor's Notes

  1. Hello everyone and thanks for coming.
  2. + We are EFL/ESP/Business teachers, ICT consultants, trainers, editors. + English360 is a web app that pushes content and learning in new directions: 3 + 1 + Ask about them: teachers, BE, publishers? + I’ve been involved in setting up blended solutions or platforms for almost a decade I am now working on the English360 team as Teaching Community Coordinator And Emma is XXXX
  3. Over the past two days of the Virtual Round Table (that Heike has so brilliantly put together) we’ve been discussing what we think is a new direction that our profession will be moving towards, which is a new approach to teaching materials – we’ve been sharing the new learning opportunities which are emerging. So Emma and I are pleased to be able to talk about a new community platform, which English360 in collaboration with CUP will launching in January 2010. it is already open and available for teachers in beta form now and we will explain how to join the preview program if you are interested. When people ask us to describe E360 it’s really hard to sum it up. There are elements of an LMS A book A learning space Authoring tools Collaborative and community features It’s not a course – it’s not a teaching model. It’s a tool for busy teachers to use to create blended elements to their training programs.
  4. Perhaps it’s easier to describe what it isn’t It’s not a course – it’s not a teaching model. It’s a tool for busy teachers to use to create blended elements to their training programs. Cleve Miller the founder of English360 often uses this pipe metaphor. I agree that it is helpful in distinguishing between static delivery and the content thrown at you vs. active participation in the creation of content
  5. The old web offered top-down, expert created, static content This was pasively consumed Now to illustrate the new web what image can we use to capture the Collaborative, active and personalized participation. office photo
  6. It is important to point out that technology provides the platform, the users provide the value Technology will not replace teachers but teachers who use technology will probably replace teachers who do not
  7. CUT?? + flickr facebook twitter etc are simply tools The value comes in what you upload, share, search and find, discuss, If we take a look at what social media means we could perhaps say it’s when a community collects around “things” they call social objects
  8. Left hand side first + then –
  9. + reality of the classroom
  10. continue with CC, showing not either or, but blended curriculum, show diagram
  11. continue with CC, showing not either or, but blended curriculum, show diagram
  12. continue with CC, showing not either or, but blended curriculum, show diagram
  13. + disadvantages lowered + It’s been one-sided until now, teacher are creative, innovation will come from community + e360 to give teachers a stronger voice, not just NS elite

  25. next topic: authenticity = performance Web-based collaborative platforms make this possible
  26. We are working towards making the English360 community one more step closer to this goal.
