5. INDIA IN SHORTFALL OF
INVENTIVE TEACHERS
There are many issues that need urgent attention for improving the quality of teacher
education programme. One of them is the need of innovations in teacher education
programme. Innovativeness means the ability to think beyond the boundaries and create
something which is different from that which already exists. Without innovations, no
progress is possible. Teachers have to be innovative and their grooming has to start from
their training institutions. Innovations in teacher education include IT literacy, interactive
teleconferencing etc. NPE (1986) stated āThe existing system of teacher education needs
to be overhauled or revamped.ā

AWARD
The Global Teacher Prize is a US $1 million award presented annually to an exceptional
teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession. Presented by the
Varkey Foundation from 2014, is considered as the āNoble Prize for teachersā.
The Global Teacher Prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact
that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated. It seeks
to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers ā not only on their students but on
the communities around them.

In this study, analysis of news articles, official website, and authentic publications was
done and information was extracted using secondary sources. Also, interview recordings
of Ranjith Disale to various media houses were analyzed to collect information which is

10. DREAMT TO BE AN ENGINEER
TURNED TERRIFIC TEACHER
He wanted to became an IT engineer, but somehow he could not do it. Later, his father
suggested him to pursue his career as a teacher. He joined a teacher training course,
Initially hesitant, Ranjithās time in teacher training college was life-changing. He saw that
teachers are the real change-makers in the world, and decided to become a primary
teacher in Zilla Parishad Primary School. Paritewadi, Maharashtra in 2009.

11. CHALLENGES FACED
Ranjith Disale, alike an ordinary teacher got his first appointment as assistant teacher.
The first school he taught in was in a dilapidated building, sandwiched between a cattle
shed and a storeroom. Most of the girls were from tribal communities that did not
prioritise girlsā education, and the practice of teenage marriage was common.
Additionally, the curriculum was not in the studentsā primary language (Kannada), which
meant that many students were unable to achieve expected learning outcomes. Unlike
ordinary teacher he was not convinced by the education delivered and received by the
students, he decided to innovate the teaching methodology and paid attention towards
girls education as the share of girls education was minimal, due to unawareness, child
marriage,

12. ESSENCE OF INNOVATION
Ranjith Disale, unlike any usual teacher wanted to enhance the teaching learning
experience among students. He took on the task of turning things around and ensuring the
textbooks were available in the local language for the pupils and not only translated the
class textbooks into his pupils' mother tongue but also embedded them with unique QR
codes to give students access to audio poems, video lectures, stories and assignments.
The impact of his interventions has been that there are now no reported teenage
marriages in the village and 100 per cent attendance of girls at the school.

13. ESSENCE OF INNOVATION
Ranjith then went on to create nothing short of a revolution in the use of QR coded
textbooks throughout India. His school was the first in the state of Maharashtra to
introduce them and after submitting a proposal and successful pilot scheme, the State
Ministry announced in 2017 that they would introduce QR coded textbooks across the
state for all grades 1-12.
Following the success of this, HRD Ministry of India asked NCERT (National Council of
Education Research and Training) to study the impact of QR Coded Textbooks and how
this can be scaled up nationally. In 2018, HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar announced that
all NCERT textbooks would have embedded QR Codes

14. A REFORMER BEYOND
CLASSROOM
Beyond the classroom, Ranjith helps his students apply their learning to tackle real world
problems they are facing. With his school in a drought-prone district of Maharashtra, his
school has now successfully tackled the issue of desertification, increasing green land
from 25% to 33% in the last ten years. In all, 250 hectares of land surrounding his village
was saved from desertification, earning his school the āWipro Nature for Societyā award
in 2018.

15. LETāS CROSS THE BORDERS ā
AN INITIATIVE
Disale is equally passionate about building peace between young people across conflict
zones and through a "Let's Cross the Borders" project, he connects young people from
India and Pakistan, Palestine and Israel, Iraq and Iran, and the US and North Korea.
Over a six-week programme, students are matched with a peace buddy from other
countries with whom they closely interact. So far, Disale has initiated an incredible
19,000 students from eight countries into this programme.

16. ACCOLADES AND TITLES
ā¢ Other then global teachers award 2020, Ranjith Disale received two major laurels in
teaching innovation. In 2016, Govt. of India awarded him as āInnovative Researcher
of the Yearā. And, in 2018 Ranjith received āInnovator of the Year awardā by
National Innovation Foundation, India.
ā¢ Not only in India, He has been widely celebrated and honoured by the foreign
institutes. Microsoft Corporation has bestowed āMIE Expert ā , "MIE Fellow" and "
Skype Master Teacher" award to Ranjith for creative work. He had also represented
India in Microsoft Education Exchange(E2), Toronto Canada. His work has been
recognized by The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella in one of the three stories from
India in his book āHit Refreshā.

18. CONCLUSION
Despite all the hurdles and being in an ordinary profession as a teacher he displayed
exemplary zeal and inventive approach to figure out not only education but quality
education for every child. addressing the most sensitive issue of girl education in India
Ranjith empowered girl education from 2% attendance to 100%. his innovative approach
of inducing QR codes has been widely recognized and included not only by state govt.
but NCERT. His noble gesture to share 50% of the prize money among fellow finalist
shows his unique selfless character and respect towards the profession.
India is in urgent need of dedicated plus creative teacher to roadmap Indian education
system and to impart quality education for all.
