2. The marine engineering department as part of
department on board the ship have several
duties, function and responsibility on which
have to be accomplished by the chief engineer,
second engineer, third engineer and fourth
engineer.
AIM:
The aim of this presentation is to discus duties
and responsibility of the chief engineer, second
engineer, third engineer and fourth engineer on
body the ship.
3. A marine chief engineer is a key member of the on body ship, he/she
observing the entire marine engineering department on the
vessel , responsible for the maintenance and operation of all
engineering equipment on board the ship.
The general duties, function and responsibility of marine chief
engineer is as follow…
I. Chief engineer holds complete responsibility for the operation of
the engine room and any maintenance of on body the ship.
II. Work closely with captain to ensure that the physical aspect of
vessel is completely under control.
III. Maintain inventory for spare part, extra fuel, and hub oil which
must kept up to date.
IV. Ensure that the engine room is well kept and prepare for
inspection by higher authorities also be responsible if inspection
find the room unsatisfactory.
V. Deliver general daily operation of the engine room to his/her
assistance.
VI. Active participate in ship yard repair and maintenance period
4. The second engineer provide at most assistance to the chief engineer
for the running the ship efficient. He/she in charge for all
operational engineer and crew ensure their personal and routine
duties and maintenance of all machinery in engine room.
The general duties of second engineer are as follows:
1. Safety
Risk assessment , briefing and safety training especially for
junior engineer and fresh crews on board.
LSA & FFA, Responsible for operational and maintenance of
life saving appliance and fire fighting appliance.
Emergency equipment, responsible for all emergency
machinery and equipment under SOLAS.
Rest hours, The rest hours of all the individual working in the
engine room has to be taken care by the second engineer.
5. 2. Pollution prevention
Pollution prevention machine, is in charge of
pollution prevention equipment on board. Example
sewage plant.
Oil transfer, responsible for all oil transfer operation
carried out in board.
Sludge and bilge, has to keep the engine room bilge
clean out in board.
Regulations, all rules and regulation related to
MARPOL has to be applied and implemented by
second engineer.
6. 3. Engine room management
Responsible, in charge for the managing the engine
room staff and carrying all duties of the engine room
Assistance, he is directly report to the chief engineer
also become the in charge of the engine room on his
absence.
Job distribution; he distribute and assigns duties to all
engine crew members and acts as supervisor to them.
House keeping;he is incharge of engine room house
keeping.
Spare and Inventory; second engineer is responsible for
storing all the spare and record of the spare inventory.
7. The third engineer should be qualified specialist in accident free
technical and equipment maintenance. Assisting the chief
engineer and second engineer in accident free technical
maintenance of the vessel and equipment.
The third engineer of the vessel should fulfill the following…
Assist the reliable performance, prepare maintenance and
servicing of equipment.
Monitors fuel, lubricant, water supplies and maintenance supplies
Comply with implementation of higher authority direction in case
accident
Ensure the proper use of accidental equipment assigned to
engineering department also inform the senior engineer on duty
of any malfunction equipments.
8. The forth engineer shall report to the second engineer who assign
the duty to him
The following are duties of the fourth engineer…
He should check the inventory and location of all purifier and
compressor spare.
He should check inventor and location of pumps spares and
tool.
He should check general condition of machine and special
procedure for operation.
Condition and layout of sludge and bilge discharge system
including valve and pump operations
9. .Is the first step to reach an officer ranking.
He follows the instruction of the chief engineer
and attend the engine control room usually as
part of the watch keeping
.Assists in the maintanence and repair of the
engine
He is working together with chief engineer,
second engineer, third engineer and fourth
engineer
He is doing watch keeping
