2. ► is a sequence of words or a group of words arranged in a
grammatical construction and function as a unit in a sentence.
► There are five commonly occurring types of phrase. They are:
● Noun Phrase(NP)
● Adjective Phrase(AdP)
● Verb Phrase(VP)
● Adverb Phrase(AdvP)
● Prepositional Phrase(PP)

3. ► refers to a phrase that built upon a noun which functions as the
headword of the phrase.
Examples:
The young man threw the old dog a bone.

Pretty girls whispered softly.

4. ► refers to a phrase that modifies a noun.
► it built upon an adjectitive which functions as the headword of the
phrase.
Examples: She seemed extremely pleasant.
(AdP)
You are much quicker than I.
(AdP)

5. ► refers to a phrase that composed of at least one verb and the
dependents of the verb, in which the verb functions as the headword of
the phrase.
Examples: He has been singing.
(VP)
The child found the puppy.
(VP)

6. ► It is simply two or more words that act as adverb.
► It can modify a verb , an adjective , or an adverb.
► Plays the role of telling us when, where, why, or how an event occurred, in which
the adverb functions as the headwords of the phrase.

7. Example: 1. The current design of the platform is vastly superior to the old one.
( vastly modifies the adjective superior )
2. The situation has improved very slowly.
( very modifies the adverb slowly )
3. Consequently , the design had to be improved.

8. ► refers to a phrase that begins with a preposition, in which the
preposition functions as the headword of the phrase.
Examples: He arrived by plane.
