Discussion
VALUES, GOALS, AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Values are a person's or society's beliefs about good behavior and w hat things are important.
An example of values are the accepted beliefs of a family about dating. Values are influenced by family, friends, teachers,
coaches, television, movies, social media, etc. Each person has values that guide his/ her daily decisions.
A goal is a desired result envisioned by a person or a group and accompanied by an effort aimed at
achievement.
A need is something that is necessary or required for life, like food, water, clothing, and shelter.
Wants are unnecessary things but desired. These things may increase the quality of living or make a person happier.
Brainstorm of examples of w ants: gadgets, designer clothes, jew ellery, etc.
How do Values influence goals, needs and wants?
Whena personconsiderssomethingimportant, forexamplethe need of having a decent and well-paid
job,s/he may make it his/hergoal to studyhard inorderto graduate college. If beingpopularorhaving
all the newest gadgets is valued, then a person may have lots of wants, and s/he will be willing to do
everything in order to get what s/he desires.
2. Every person has his/her own set of values, goals, and what s/he considers as needs and wants. Aside
fromvariouspossible problems, these differences canoftentimes cause frictionin any group, especially
at home. This friction or disagreement is called conflict. It is important for us to know how to resolve
conflicts within a family wisely in order to manage a home.
Conflict Resolution is the process by w hich tw o or more parties engaged in a disagreement, dispute, or debate reach
an agreement resolving it.
Steps In Resolving Family Conflict
Step 1 State the problem and determine who needs to work together to develop the solution.
When family members clearly identify a problem, they can begin to w ork on it. How ever, w hen people don't
acknow ledge the problem, or avoid discussing it altogether, a successful resolution becomes impossible.
Step 2 Establish ground rules for resolving the problem.
Before discussing w ays to resolve the problem, set some rules for the discussion. For example, agree that no one
w ill call anyone names or ban yelling. Encourage small breaks from the discussion if tempers flare, and emphasize
the importance of resolving conflict peacefully.
Step 3 Brainstorm solutions to the problem.
Allow everyone involved to offer input into potential solutions. During the brainstorming process, don't judge
w hether each solution is good or bad, but instead, create a list of potential solutions.
Step 4 Evaluate the risks and benefits of each potential solution.
Listen to each family member's input about the pros and cons of the solutions.
Step 5 Reach a solution as a team.
Try to reach a consensus about w hich solution w ill best resolve the conflict. Be w illing to negotiate, and encourage
family members to be open to new solutions.
Step 6 Identify what each family member will do to work on the solution.
Each person should identify action steps he w ill take to w orktow ard the solution.
