Prokaryotic Gene Expression Asignment
1. P3/M3/D3 Prokaryotic Gene Expression
Unit 18: Genetics and Genetic Engineering Assessed by Teresa Greer
Start date: February 23rd 2009 Hand in date: March 16th 2009
Purpose
Learners will be examining the issues surrounding genetics and genetic engineering with
specific focus on the use of prokaryotes for this purpose. Issues the learners will be exam-
ining will include the types of cells used for genetic modification, the benefits of genetic
modification and the uses.
Scenario
You are working for a school education program and the brief you have been given is to
provide local schools with relevant information about the benefits of genetic engineering,
the methods used to genetically modify organisms and what organisms are used.
Task A This provides evidence for P3
Part one: You need to identify a current use for genetic engineering in industry and prepare
a five minute presentation discussing the techniques and applications of this area of sci-
ence.
Part two: You will be investigating the control of prokaryotic gene expression looking spe-
cifically at Beta Galactosidase. On completion you will write a full practical report with
discussion.
Hand in date March 5th
Task B This provides evidence for M3
For this task you will be examining how gene expression is controlled in the Lac Operon.
For this you need to produce an A3 poster that shows the lac operon and discusses control
mechanisms.
Hand in date March 9th
Task C This provides evidence for D3
This provides evidence for key skills
In genetic engineering prokaryotic cells are preferred over eukaryotic cells? Why do you
think this is? Write a 1,000 word essay with the title
Compare and Contrast the use of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells in
Genetic Engineering
You must use at least five references and at least one of these must be non-internet based
