Btec National Unit 13 From Dna To Protein
1. P4 M4 D4 From DNA to Protein
Unit 13: Biochemical Techniques Assessed by Teresa Greer
Start date: September 22nd Hand in date: October 20th
Purpose
We are our DNA, it codes for everything that makes you, you and me, me. But when they
say the gene for eye colour, what are they talking about? What does the DNA in a gene do
and how, if all people have 99.9% of our DNA in common, does are DNA make us
unique? In this unit learners will examine how DNA carries the genetic code and then
how this code is interpreted to give individual characteristics.
Scenario
You are acting as a laboratory technician who needs to create an information pack for Ha-
ringey A-Level students to explain to them how one gene codes for one protein. In your
pack you will discuss the differences between DNA and RNA as well as how the code is
used to create a protein.
Task A This provides evidence for P4
Part one:
You will create a fact sheet about DNA that discusses the structure and function with spe-
cific mention of the nitrogenous bases.
Part two:
You will create a slidecast that discusses how the genetic code is located in the DNA mak-
ing reference again to DNA structure and how mutation affects the reading of the code
Hand in date October 1st
Task B This provides evidence for M4
You will create a basic fact sheet about RNA, its role and structure. Supplementary to this
you will create a diagrammatic step by step explanation of transcription and translation
with specific mention of the role of RNA
Hand in date October 10th
Task C This provides evidence for D4
For this task you need to create a profile of each type of RNA making focus on how the
structure relates to function in biosynthesis and any implications for use in industry.
