to be mindful of their decisions and actions, and how they affect others. But when business is taken
to the international and global level, being conscious of ethics becomes absolutely vital. In order to
be successful long–term, ethical practices must be followed, as well as having a level of social
responsibility. Companies or individuals who do not have a laid–out, defined set of values may find
themselves compromising and taking unethical shortcuts to a profit. Unethical business practices
can seem like the easy way to reach goals, if looked at with only short–term perception. But when
values are compromised, it often leads to disaster in the long run. Richard Rudden, managing

business environment and the competition of capitalistic markets in the ethical debate on the
efficacy of Confucian business ethics. Lagan's (2006) case study effectively defines the overarching
harmony of universal mandates defined by Confucius, which argued against the pro–capitalist

Deontological theory
The term 'deontological' stems from an ancient Greek term that means 'duty'. This position of ethics

perspective, ethics is determined by asking what the right action to take is instead of asking what is
good. What is looked at is whether the action to be taken is right in itself. However, at this point, the

The Unethical Business in Business Ethics When people think about ethics, it is usually about
making decisions between good or bad. What is meant by this is that people normally think of doing
good deeds, or giving to the disadvantaged as the typical form of ethics. What generally eludes most
people, is ethics in the form of selecting between better or best. A great example can be in movies,
where a superhero will be required to save one of two people. It is either a loved one, which it would
be best for the hero's personal interests, or a fellow superhero, which will be best in the interest of
the people. An ethical choice of this nature is never an easy one to make. Another place where
ethical choices are often made, but not regularly heard about is in businesses. The main purpose of a
business is to remain profitable and continue operating as efficiently as possible. Ethics tie closely
into business decisions because businesses normally have to make choices that might hurt others but
will benefit their own company. Although some of these choices are in the best interest of the

In this paper, we will look at the business ethics controversy that was caused by Volkswagen and the
company had to pay up to $15 billion dollars to settle a civil court case. The controversy was caused
when it was found out that Volkswagen had installed a device in their diesel engine cars. This device
reduced pollution caused by the engine when it was being tested for emissions. This resulted in
cheating the authorities and promoting Volkswagen as an environmentally friendly car when it was
not actually one. It had these devices installed on most of its car models. The company initially had
an increase in sales but then was eventually caught and had to pay a large sum of money as
mentioned above to settle a lawsuit.

Among the major business ethics related theories there is Friedman's, developed in the 1970s in the
US (Harrison, 2010, pp. 186–187). The following quote from Friedman's thesis, sums up his general
view of the social responsibility businesses have in society: "There is one and only one social

Before the results of the investigation are discussed, some concepts are explained that form the
framework of the discussion. Some previous studies may serve as reference material in the
interpretation of the findings. This section gives an overview of relevant literature on the topic of

how cultural values plays it role in business ethics as the case in ICT companies. Lots of works was
published on the potential usefulness and development of cultural values. However few sources can
be found that tackle this topic in the ICT domain.
Based on 15 articles that we have reviewed we have found out several patterns that can be further
discussed throughout this study. Among the issue highlighted by those literatures is the influence of
company culture with the company performance in terms of customer satisfaction and preferences.
