1) The document provides descriptions of the costumes, hair, and makeup for characters in a film called GRIM.
2) The characters include Jack, Devante, Jodie, Amanda, Hayley, Katy, Trevor, and Billie. Descriptions emphasize how their appearances reflect personality traits and foreshadow events.
3) For example, Jack wears dark, formal clothes reflecting his mysterious background while Devante ignores the dress code, showing his rebellious nature and foreshadowing that he will clash with Jack.
2. Conor (Jack)
AntagonistMake up- Jack is to wear no makeup. He is portrayed to be a
strong, mysterious and quiet character. His background is
unknown within the students at school, Jack keeps himself to
himself.
Hair- short straight comb over, jack is a very smart and
presentable person, he doesn’t know much about clothes and
trends as he has spent most of his life by himself, he knows
how to dress accordingly to the schools dress code.
Costume- Navy blue Barbour jacket, white suit shirt with
patterned tie, black slim fit suit trousers and smart shoes. Jack
follows the school dress code, this could link to Jack’s religion
and how he lives his life as a devoted Christian, but could also
be due to his naivety. Jack hasn’t come across rebellious
behaviour or any influences as such, so he believes that he
should do whatever he is told to do by those with authority.
The dark colours connect Jack with his dark background and
history, ones that his new classmates wont be able to
understand or relate with. It also shows that he is mysterious as
nobody really knows who he is. Could also foreshadow that
Jack is a dangerous person, one that brings death.
3. Martin (Devante)
Wrath 1st Victim
Make up- Devante is to wear no makeup. He is portrayed to be a
strong, mischievous and dangerous character due to his connections.
Caught up in a life of crime outside of school that his fellow classmates
are unaware of, Devante works hard to keep a reputation at his school.
Hair- Short level 2 Afro-Caribbean fade with mid parting. This shoes
that despite his crazy private life, Devante is still interested in following
current trends and styles, as this haircut is very common (currently)
within the afro-carribean community. Devante is vain but still makes
the effort to look good, especially now that he has split with Jodie,
who viewed to be the best looking and most popular girl in the sixth
form
Costume- Navy blue parka coat, black jumper with a gold chain round
the neck. Black skinny jeans and black canvas shoes. Devante
completely ignores the school dress code. This is because his character
is stubborn, arrogant and believes that he may do as he pleases. The
dark colours connect with his dark lifestyle of petty crimes and
violence, and also shows that he is intimidating.
It is later discovered that he is bound to clash with Jack, and effectively
is his first victim so the dark colours may signify and foreshadow that
Devante’s life is in danger.
4. Shannon (Jodie)
Fornication 2nd Victim
Make up- Jodie uses less makeup then it would presume a girl of her
character would in order to promote her natural beauty. She likes to
keep it natural and applies very little makeup, other than foundation,
eyeliner, lip-gloss and will also have bright pink blusher. Jodie, like
Hayley too, is aware of her looks, therefore knows not too try too
hard with makeup.
Hair- Long, light brown hair, down. Jodie’s hair is flocks and waves
around in a casual manner. This shows that Jodie is confident, as she
makes no particular effort into straightening or curling her hair, trying
different hairstyles or even trying to stand out with an exotic hair
style. She keeps it natural, and still knows that this particular
hairstyle will still suit her.
Costume- grey crotchet knitted jumper, light pink skater skirt, black
tights and black shoes. Jodie dressed in a voluptuous way to attract
the other gender. In the trailer she does so but still manages to try to
match the schools strict dress code. This may show her sneaky side
as she is seen as the innocent little girl by her parents and those with
authority, but when she’s not around them she switches back to her
old promiscuous self.
She wears bright colours such as pink to show her femininity and
childishness, as well as blacks and greys to show that she can be
formal. Jodie tends to show a bit of skin with her outfits, this can
portray her personality as she is mischievous, erotic and cheeky
character.
5. Sophie (Amanda)
Blasphemy 3rd Victim
Make up- Dark eye makeup , dark lipstick.
Hair- Hair down and around her face.
Costume- All black. Skirt, tights, jumper, choker.
Make up- Dark eye make up, dark lipstick. Amanda instead chooses to
take on the natural look, but applies the mascara and eye shadow to
sharpener her eyes. The message to the audience will be clear that this
character clearly spends a lot of time making up their face, rather than
going for the more natural look which could indicate a level of vanity.
The behaviour of this character will make it clear that the heavy layers
of make up are not a result of insecurity. It will be obvious that this
character has a high opinion of herself.
Hair- straight hair down, that freely hangs around her face. This shows
that Amanda isn’t insecure. She likes the way she looks and has chose
to separate herself rom the rest of her classmates. She is confident that
this look is the one for her, and likes to embrace her style.
Costume- black skirt with black and green chequered trench coat, with
heeled boots and tights. She will still dress to match the school uniform
regulations but will try and bend it as much as possible. Due to her
vanity, she acknowledges that she is attractive and believes that she is
more prestigious then her fellow schoolmates, therefore instead
dresses to match that of a successful woman. The jumper shows that
despite her sophisticated approach, that this is not the best to come
from her wardrobe, and shows that this is a casual look.
6. Rachel (Hayley)
Vanity 4th victim
Make up- To show this characters vanity, she will be in a lot of
makeup. This will mean that she will be likely to be wearing
heavier eye makeup and more noticeable shade of lipstick. It
will be obvious that she is wearing layers of foundation, the
message to the audience will be clear that this character clearly
spends a lot of time making up their face, rather than going for
the more natural look which could indicate a level of vanity. The
behaviour of this character will make it clear that the heavy
layers of make up are not a result of insecurity. It will be obvious
that this character has a high opinion of herself.
Hair- Curly wavy hair, that freely hangs around her face. She is
confident that this look is the one for her.
Costume- tight black skirt with cropped jumper, with heeled
boots and tights. She will still dress to match the school uniform
regulations but will try and bend it as much as possible. Due to
her vanity, she acknowledges that she is attractive and believes
that she is more prestigious then her fellow schoolmates,
therefore instead dresses to match that of a successful woman.
The jumper shows that despite her sophisticated approach, that
this is not the best to come from her wardrobe, and shows that
this is a casual look.
7. Sasha (Katy)
Envy 5th Victim
Make up- little to none. This emphasises Katy’s character. She decides
not to make the same amount of effort in the morning then her two
compatriots Jodie and Hayley would. Why? Because she believes that
she is not worthy. Katy's character has low self esteem and she works
extremely hard not to show it, so she keeps her makeup basic so that
she doesn't have to feel that she’s trying so hard. She bears that
“everyday” makeup consisting of a satisfying amount of mascara and
eyeliner. She does it in a way that wouldn’t stop the boys but also
help her feel confident enough to go out.
Hair- Up in a bun. Each day Katy attempts to pull of the ‘half hearted’
look. She does this so she can look different to both Jodie and Hayley,
she feels that she cannot aspire to be like them because she believes
that they are out of her league. She envies them heavily because they
don’t have to try hard in order to look pretty.
Costume- black jeans, grey jumper and black canvas shoes. This once
again shows that Katy prefers to keep it casual. Her lifestyle matches
her dress sense. Despite the schools strict dress code, Katy still
manages to get away with wearing black skinny jeans, this may signify
that she’s a quiet and unnoticeable character outside her friendship
group and is simply missed by the teachers, hence managing to get
away with the jeans.
8. Joe (Trevor)
Chloe’s Friend 6th Victim
Make up- Trevor is to wear no makeup. He is seen as a nice,
noble and caring character that is first to listen to Billie’s cry. He
also represents the majority of sixth form students that are
caring and down-to-earth. Not the most popular guy in his sixth
form, Trevor gets by and is liked by the students that he is
acknowledged by, he later establishes an alliance with Billie and
attempts to take down Jack.
Hair- slicked back, Trevor is a very smart and presentable
person, he has his own style and likes to show off his wardrobe.
Trevor would come underneath the ‘hipster’ group for the way
he dresses
Costume- denim blue jean jacket, black turtle neck, black slim
fit suit trousers and smart shoes. Trevor is also one to bend the
rules and follows the school dress code to an extent, this could
show Trevor's character as one that likes to express himself but
is also aware of what he can and cant do.
9. Chloe (Billie)
Final Girl
Make up- For the character of the final girl we will have her with plain makeup,
nothing more than just foundation and mascara. This is to support her character
as an innocent girl. She doesn’t belong in a group with the popular girl but is still
happy with her life regardless. She doesn’t feel the need to impress anyone and is
happy looking ‘simple’.
Billie has a fringe, her hair would be in a way that will not cover her face entirely
but will have a fringe that will cover her forehead. This is to separate herself from
the other girls as the whole fringe look is not as common in the modern day. Billie
is also considered as ‘the slow girl’. She’s late when it comes to recognising trends
and prefers old school tracks, she carries an IPod Nano to school, a device that
was released in September 2005. Like her makeup, she keeps her hairstyle
simple. The fringe covers her forehead and parts of her eyebrows and eyes whilst
the back is tied into a ponytail. This is to show that she doesn't put too much
effort into doing her hair as she doesn’t attempt to ‘woo’ the boys. She will wear
a small black ribbon in her hair that she could use later on in the film to aid her
friend Trevor after he is endures some damage in the conclusion of the film.
Costume- Billie will not be like the other females in the trailer, she is portrayed as
a hard working girl, she doesn’t floss her feminine side as much as the other girls
in the movie, as she feels that she doesn’t need to. She is seen to wear a baggy
grey woolly jumper, smart female trousers that have been cut and folded to cover
just above the ankle; and black canvas shoes.
