2. What is it used for?
• It has two main uses:
1. It is either used to refer to
something that happens
before a specific action
in the past.
2. Or to refer to something
that happens before a
specific time in the past.
3. “Magic Words”
• Remember
Present Perfect?
Past Perfect uses
the same magic
words.
• Already, never,
just, for...
• So, if any of these
words appears in
a sentence, check
the context.
They had been married for
3 years when they divorced.
He‘d never met a native
English speaker until he
visited London.
I‘d just finished all the
work by the time you
called.
4. How is it formed?
• The Past Perfect is formed with the
auxiliary verb to have in the past
simple and the past participle of
the main verb.
• The Past participle of regular verbs
is formed with the verb in the
infinitive and –(e)d. (Example:
dance – danced).
The Past Participle of irregular verbs
is in the 3rd column of the table of
the irregular verbs. (Example: do –
done).

5. Affirmative Form
• Subject + had + Main verb in the past participle
Negative Form
• The negative form of the Past Perfect is formed with the auxiliary verb
in the negative (hadn´t) and the past participle of the main verb.
• Subject + hadn´t + Past Participle of the Main verb
Interrogative Form
• In the interrogative we form the Past Perfect by writing the auxiliary
verb before the subject.
• Had + Subject + Past Participle of the Main verb
